All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ BILLUPS CHAPEL DEDICATED The Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops of the Hammond State School participated in the flag-salute during ceremonies dedicating the Billups All-Faith Chapel Sunday afternoon and members of the Billups family were on hand to mark the 10 anniversary of Hammond State School. Lt. Gov. James Fitzmorris arrived by helicopter and former Gov. Jimmy Davis, Mrs. Davis and the Gospel Singers sang. Music was also provided by members of the combo and choir of Hammond State School. Dr. T. V. Owens, chaplain of the State School, delivered the dedicatory address and E. L. Morgan, school superintendent, welcomed special guests. Presented were W. L. (Buddy) Billups of Hammond, who donated the original $100,000 to start the building, the Guy Billups Sr., of Greenwood, Miss., and their guest, Mrs. Jeff Hamm of the University of Mississippi. Austin Glass was introduced as the acting superintendent who will replace Morgan at the end of his retirement. Master of ceremonies was Harold G. Raymond, chairman of the chapel committee. The Rev. Edward Griffin of Woodland Park Baptist Church led the invocation. The blessing of the chapel was given by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Patrick Gilespie of Baton Rouge Diocese with the Rev. R. W. McNicholas of Holy Ghost Church Hammond in charge. Rev. B. Alex Gibson of AM Church in Amite presented certificates and awards. Mrs. Marion Rounds, outgoing president of the Parent-Teacher Association, participated in the introduction. Among those present 10 years ago and recognized were Mrs. Lillian Walker then president of the Louisiana association of Retarded Children, Mrs. Estell Stire, and Judge Leon Ford III.
