The house, now the family residence of Mr. and Mrs. Lionell Larrieu, about a mile west of Ponchatoula on the Springfield Road, has undergone extreme remodeling and is attractively situated in a background of towering trees. It is sturdy and erect and faces the main thoroughfare. Of interest is the fact that one of the students who attended the school was the late, Mrs. E. D. Parker, who then was Lillian Ray. Mrs. Parker was the mother of Mrs. J. S. Vaughan and Mrs. L. E. Layrisson. It was one of the early rural schools around 1890 in the Ponchatoula Wadesboro area, and was named for Collins, the owner and founder, and called Collinswood School. In this era the only schooling available was either by private schools or by private tutors. The Collins family had hired a governess to teach their daughter. Upon learning that others were desirous of this privilege for their children, Mr. Collins built the schoolhouse, which served the purpose. (From ECHOES FROM THE ATTIC, III, 1968, by Edna Campbell) (Note: According to the Historical Collinswood School Museum brochure, it was started around 1876, and operated until 1908 with grades 1 through 6. The City of Ponchatoula purchased the building in 1975 and moved it onto property at 100 East Pine Street, property donated by the Edwards family. The museum at the corner of East Pine and South East Railroad Avenue contains numerous artifacts from the rich historical past of this city. The Taste of Bavaria Bakery & Restaurant is now located on the property at 14476 Hwy 22. BEC 1/10/01) (See also Part VII "They Collect Wooden Treasures" for another related article.)
