Mrs. Rhetta Kennedy wanted a patio to enhance her home. She decided the most logical and sure way was to make it herself. She obtained old chimney bricks and with the assistance of a 17-year-old neighbor, Jennifer Lott, she lay the bricks one-by-one, mixing the mortar as she went along. This amateur bricks- mason found it took a bit of engineering to create the desired pattern but she and Jennifer kept their noses to the ground until completed. Rhetta did not stop there. She wanted the patio attractive and unique. Again she lay bricks to create an old-fashioned well replica, complete with hanging bucket. This she surrounded with foliage. Another project was underground lines for effective lighting with gas. Landscaping presented another challenge. She started off with azaleas, the small dwarf type. She added numerous tropical plants for the proper blending for the patio, pool side and adjoining brick home. Patio hospitality now includes wrought-iron chairs and tables and bird baths. Potted plants center brick columns near the entrance. Palms and elephant ears lend authenticity. Mrs. Kennedy is the former Loretta Schum, the wife of Curtis Kennedy and the mother of three children. The Kennedy home is about 2 * miles west of Ponchatoula on the Springfield Road. In addition to her household duties, Mrs. Kennedy operates a beauty shop and is a realty agent.
