All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Article - Ponchatoula - Local Firemen Assist Hammond Convent'n Plan "The Enterprise" Ponchatoula, Tangipahoa Par., LA August 19, 1934 LOCAL FIREMEN ASSIST HAMMOND CONVENT'N PLAN Opening Festivities to Be Held at Ponchatoula Beach, According to Tentative Arrangements The annual convention of the Louisiana State Firemen's association, which will be held in Hammond on September 11, 12 and 13, will open its festivities with a fish fry at Ponchatoula Beach, according to a statement made by Jack Hall at the firemen's meeting Monday night regarding tentative plans of the program committee as outlined at a meeting held in Hammond last Friday. When the firemen register in Hammond they will be assigned to their rooms and then sent or taken to Ponchatoula Beach for the balance of the day where a big fish fry will be staged with dancing, bathing, etc. to furnish amusement for the visiting fire fighters. Wednesday at 11 o'clock the memorial services will be held and in the afternoon a bathing beauty contest will be held at the Hammond swimming pool. Wednesday night the annual banquet and dance will be held, with the dance taking place in Southeastern gym. Other forms of amusement will be interspersed in the program by the committee which is made up of men from Ponchatoula, Hammond and Amite. The Ponchatoula Volunteer Fire department elected George Goodman to serve as chief for the balance of the term of L. E. Parker, who was dismissed from the department at a continued meeting last month. Luther E. Carruth, Jr., was elected to the office of treasurer to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Goodman's promotion. The members elected William Hawkins and Luther E. Carruth, Jr. as delegates to the Hammond convention, and Jimmie Evans and S.A. Cowen as alternates. Young Ridgdell was appointed chairman of a supper committee to perfect plans for a supper for the local fireman on Thursday, August 16.
