It is a program designed to give information to five fields to certain selected high school students from all over the state. The areas that were offered were: speech, journalism, newspaper, yearbook, and library. Those who attended from Independence were: Phyliss Sciortino, Betty Morgan, Jo Marie Morgan, Tommy Joiner, Marian McManus, and Virginia Guiffreda. Pelican State Pelican State is a nine-day session which is held annually at the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. This program teaches young men and women the principles and mechanics of government through lessons and actual experience. Those who represented Independence High School were: Bruce Bennett, Clerk of Court; Betty Morgan, a member of the School Board; Davis Johnson, a member of the House of Representatives and Secretary of the Conservation Committee; and Virginia Guiffreda, president of the School Board.
