VELMA Velma was a stop on the Illinois Central Railroad between Shiloh and Independence. According to Mr. J. T. Mashburn a conductor on the railroad was responsible for the name. It was sometimes part of the conductor's job to name a stop. If the name "caught on" the problem was solved. Velma could have been either named haphazardly or for some definite reason known only by the conductor.
