BALDWIN is one of eight Union soldiers buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Hammond, LA. The following is taken from the records of the state and National Archives: Between 1862 and 1865 he received several promotions. He was born in Logan Co., Ohio, in 1830 or 1832. He died Nov. 25 or 26, 1911, at the age of 79 or 81, depending upon the year of his birth. His residence at the time of enlistment was Fort Dodge, IA. He was discharged in Clinton, IA on 24 August 1865. Sgt. Baldwin was 5 feet 8 inches tall, of light complexion, had blue eyes and light colored hair. His occupation was saddler. On March 14, 1885, in Ft. Dodge, Webster Co., Iowa, he petitioned for an increase in his pension due to his ill health. His age was listed as 53. (In another document, dated 1865, he was age 35 which could be a transposition by the recorder.) Apparently he contracted a disease during his service time that continued after discharge, and became worse as he aged. He was receiving $6 per month in 1885. He was receiving $40 per month at the time of his death in 1911. He did spend some time in the Barracks General Hospital in New Orleans in 1865. Other documents listed him sick and absent from duty at other times, in other areas. One document stated that he had asthma. There is no indication of when he returned to Hammond, or that he owned any property or had any family living in the Hammond area at the time of his death. However, there is a SARAH R. BALDWIN listed on the Greenlawn Cemetery list, but no dates. P. R. Baldwin is listed as the plot owner. There are only two Baldwins listed, she has number 1- 1-173A and he has 1-1-173B. Unfortunately, no dates of birth or death are printed. Upon personal observation, there is no headstone or maker on either side of Sgt. Baldwin. I would assume she was his wife and is buried next to him. There is ample space on each side of him for several graves. Belford E. Carver, EdD August 14, 2000
