HAMMOND is one of eight Union veterans buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Hammond, LA. The following information was taken from records received from state and National Archives. J. W. Hammond enrolled on August 5, 1862 in Boscobel, Wisconsin. He was discharged June 11, 1864, in New Orleans, Louisiana. No rank was indicated. Since he enrolled at the age of 27, the year of birth would be about 1835 in Quincy, Illinois. His parents were Charles and Frances Hammond. The Greenlawn list has his year of birth 1845, which would indicate he was 17 when he enrolled. His year of death on the list is 1928. Grave No. 1-1-091B. J. W. was 5 feet 5 inches in height, had a sandy complexion, had hazel eyes and light colored hair. His occupation was listed as farmer. His second wife was Sarah Jane Gleason. They were married in Casssville, Grant Co., Wisconsin on October 20, 1861. Sarahís parents were Nelson and Rebecca Gleason. ( His first wife, Marcia Le Burdick, died about 1858 or 1859.) Her pension application was dated April 19, 1906, at the age of 60, executed in Hammond. He had been wounded in action and had lost the index finger of his right hand. Their children were listed as follows: Charles W. (July 17, ????); Mande E. (Oct 23, 1869); John Wesley (Nov 19, 1872); Mary R. (Nov 19, 1874); Edward A. (Mar 10, 1876); Geroge E. (June 18, 1878); and Lattie A. (July 11, 1881). Next to his grave are two others: (1) Sarah Jane G. Hammond, 1845-1928 (She died Feb 4, 1928. Her grave is No. 1-1-091A). (2) Carl Floyd Hammond, Aug 14, 1893-May 2, 1917: No. 1-1-091C. J. W. Hammond is listed as the plot owner for both of these. In 1-3-122A there is a George Hammond, Dec 8, 1901- Jan 11, 1924.
