HILL is one of eight Union soldiers buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond, LA. The following information was taken from records from state and National Archives. Pvt. Hill served in Co. I, 77th Illinois Infantry. He enrolled on August 18, 1862. He was 23 when he served in the Union Army and was discharged July 10, 1865 in Mobile, AL. He was 6 feet one-half inch in height, of light complexion, with brown hair and black eyes. He was a mechanic by trade. He died December 7 or 9, 1897, approximate age of 58. (The 9th appears more often in the documents.) He is in grave No. 1-1-192A; no dates. The plot ownerís name is M. C. True, who is buried in B. Both of these men served in the Union Army. He was married to Laura Hill. Her Widowís Pension application was dated December 16, 1897. She gave her age as 68. He was drawing $12 at time of his death. They owned a small house in Hammond on a half-acre of land, valued about $300. Later she was renting it for $4 per month, while she was living in Washington, DC. She may have lived with a son in DC. No details were given, but apparently they had children. His health problem was described in one of the documents: On or about 15 December 1862, while on the Mississippi River, at or near Vicksburg, he contracted "gravel", which continued to afflict him. He had to "make water very often" which produced great pain in the bladder and small of his back. He was nervous and could not stand for any length of time to do any work. He had not been treated in any hospital while in the service, and his present condition was very poor. Hammond residents writing affidavits in her behalf were: Roswell Lillie (29 Dec 1898), George S. White (23 June 1898 and 10 Jan 1899), John W. Duggins (10 Jan 1899), and A. N. Wintermute (29 Dec 1898 and on 20 Jan 1899). There was also an affidavit from his brother, Charles F. Hill, Washington DC dated 18 January 1899. In addition, there was one from Mrs. Laura O. Latham, who took her in for a period of time having found her in a destitute condition. This was dated 21 June 1899 in Washington DC. She is not listed as being buried in Hammond's Greenlawn Cemetery. (From the 1994 listing, other Hills buried in Greenlawn are Carl Frazier Hill (1945- 1950) plot owned by Weldon R. Hill; Harry P. Hill (1869-1942), and Lilly Hill (1886- 1985) plot owned by John K. Warner.) Belford E. Carver, EdD August 22, 2000
