HUMESTON is one of eight Union soliders buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond, LA. The following was taken from the state and National Archives. Corporal Humeston was a resident of DeWitt, IA, born in New York about 1840. He enlisted August 8, 1862, at the age of 22; and was promoted to corporal April 1, 1865. He served in Co. H, 26th Iowa Infantry. He was discharged June 6, 1865 in Washington, DC. Corporal Humeston was a farmer, wagon maker, and mechanic. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, of light complexion, had brown hair and blue eyes. He died October 14, 1896, at the age of 56. His wife was Mary Stewart and they were married December 6, 1865 in Jackson County, Iowa. She died May 9, 1897. She filed for his pension on October 30, 1896. He apparently was wounded or became very ill while marching to Washington in 1865 which caused blindness and partial paralysis, which became progressively worse with time, and finally causing his death. Hammond signers were: Dr. J. L. Robinson, William E. Libby, Rhonda Merritt, and G. W. Campbell. There was no information concerning any children. Neither his name nor hers appear on the Greenlawn Cemetery list, even though there is a headstone marking his grave in Section 1. No one appears to be buried next to him. He is east of two other Union veterans, Hill and True. (There is a Marie S. Humiston, 1-4-077A on the list. The dates on the headstone are December 9, 1824 - March 16, 1900, which do not correspond to Maryís date of death, 1897. "Mother" is engraved on the top. The coping is old bricks Section 4 is south of Section 1 in the cemetery.) Belford E. Carver, EdD August 22, 2000
