Pension Application of Joseph Archibald Vernon. July 9, 1910 The Texas Baptist Herald Dallas, Texas S.A. Hayden, Editor This is to certify that Archibald Vernon was a member of Company B 16th La. Infantry, C.S.A. and served with fidelity in the Confederate Army during all the campaigns of the Civil War. He was among the bravest of the brave, cheerful, orderly and faithful at all times. He was wounded at the battles of Murfreesboro, Resaca, New Hope Church, and in other battles receiving a greater number of wounds than any other soldier in his company to the best of my opinion and recollection. I never knew him to shirk a duty or grumble at hardship. On the other hand he met the burdens of the march and of the battle with heroic fortitude and even cheerfulness. Our Company was made up almost exclusively of country boys and men from old Washington Parish and there was not a foreigner among them. And it is not exaggeration to say that the privates of that company had the reputation, well deserved and well known, of being unsurpassed by any in the army of the Confederacy and Arch Vernon helped to win that distinction for them. Very Respectfully, A.S. Hayden Captain Company B. 16th La. Infantry Gibson's Brigade Army of the Tennessee
