January 8, 2003 The Kentwood News Ledger Viola Stephens Corkern Viola Stephens Corkern died at 4:15pm Wednesday, December 25, 2002 at the Riverside Medical Center. She was 95, a resident and native of Amite. She was a member of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church. Religious services were held at Crain Funeral Home, conducted by Eld. Mason Miler, Eld. Terry Robertson, Eld. Jerry Blackwell and Rev. Matt Peterson, interment at the Friendship Baptist Church near Amite. She is survived by two sons, J.Q. Corkern, Hammond and Alfred Corkern, Ferriday; six daughters, Vernell Seal, Shirley Holden and Barbara Cox, all of Amite, Margaret Ann Seal, Franklinton; Vicki Loomis, Ferriday and Sue Robertson, Kentwood; 23 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, three step children, Wilvie, Denver and J.B. Corkern's four grandchildren and her husband, John J. Corkern. Buddy Dykes Buddy Dykes died at 8:15am Friday, December 27, 2002 at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was 52, a native of Bogalusa and a resident of Kentwood. He was a farmer/butcher. Religious services were held at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, conducted by Rev. Otis Hope, interment in Tangipahoa Cemetery, Tangipahoa. He is survived by his wife, Betty Edmonds Dykes, Starkville, MS; two sons and two daughters, Charles Dykes, Kentwood, Vera Dykes, Starkville, MS, Victoria Dykes, Columbus, MS and William Dykes, Pinetock, MS; a granddaughter, Laquasha Cunningham, Starkville, MS; a brother, Coy Dykes Jr., Tangipahoa; five sisters, Evelyn McCallister, Watson, Irene Smith, Magnolia, MS, Irene Smith, Magnolia, MS, Jessie Rae Kling, Baton Rough, Linda June Lebo, Lewiston, and Janice Jarreau, Irvinville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma Travis and Coy Dykes Sr three sisters, Mae Seals, Della Rose and Emma Nell Dykes'; a brother, John Henry Dykes and three infant brothers and an infant sister. Paulina Alice Scott Harling Sandifer Paulina A. S. Harling Sandifer died at 1am Thursday, January 2, 2003 at Kentwood Manor Nursing Home. She was 84, a native of Lee County, MS and a resident of Chesbrough. Religious services were held at First Baptist Church of Arcola, conducted by Rev. Bob Simpson, interment in the Arcola-Roseland Cemetery. She is survived by a daughter and son in law, Fay Harling and Jack V. Liuzza, Amite; a son, Jonnie C. Harling, Houston, TX; a daughter, Betty H Travis, Chesbrough; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; Herman Travis and his wife Suzzane and their children, Wesley, Jessie and Shelby Peyton Travis and Lewis and Landon Tracie Travis Ballard and sons James and Joshua Ballard; Reid Travis and wife Allyson and their sons, Jacob and Sammy; two brothers Roy and Jack Scott and three sisters, Hattie Burns, Luna L. Pace and Jean McCreary. She was preceded in death by her first husband, J.C. Harling;' second husband, Lewis W. Sandifer; her parents, John and Effie Carlock Scott; five brothers, William "Doc", Andrew "Brownie", John, R.W. and J.C. Scott and four sisters, Velma, Mary, Maud and an infant sister. Paula Mae Wall Pickart Paula Mae Wall Pickart died Monday, 2003. She was 84, a native and resident of Kentwood. She graduated with a secondary education degree from SLU and a master's degree from Tulane University. After retiring in 1982, she traveled extensively and wrote a family history book, The Leas of Line Creek, which she dedicated to her mother, Mary J. Wall. Religious services were held at Line Creek Baptist Church, interment at the church cemetery. She is survived by two children, Frank A. Pickart, San Antonio, TX; and Peggy J. Pickart White, Metairie; a granddaughter, Tara A. White and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank T. Pickart. Lena Roberts Raborn Lena Raborn, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away at her home on Line Creek Rd. Tuesday, January 7, 2003. She was in her 80th year having been born on March 24, 1923. Religious services were held at McKneely Funeral Home in Kentwood, interment in the Roberts Cemetery near Osyka. She is survived by her children, Carolyn and Occh, Thomas and Doodle, Judy and Gerald, Ruby and Barrett, Donald and Norma, and Larry and Charlotte; grandchildren, Dwayne and Tina, Trey and Christi, Brad and Lacey, Wayne, Jeremy, Miranda, Chenoa and Rodney, and Jennifer; great grandchildren, Seth, Connor, Alleigh, Morgan, Rodney Jr. and Renee; a brother, Angus Roberts, Pasco. Washington and a sister in law, Juanita Wannamaker, Cincinnati, Ohio; also a special son, Dub Ricks and extended family members Benjie and Mary Morgan and Mark Palmer. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.D. Raborn; her parents, John and Beitha Roberts; two sisters, Bertha Raborn and Jemima Magee; and four brothers, John, Edgar, J.C,. and William. Donald Ray Smith Donald Ray "Bull" Smith, 65, died Jan. 10, 2003 at his residence. He was a native of Kentwood and a resident of Pontchatoula. He was a retired state employee. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth E. Smith and Kendall Ray Smith of Tickfaw; two brothers, Jewel Smith, Jr. of Kentwood, and Carlton Smith of Magnolia, MS; one sister, Betty Smith Milton; six grandchildren, one great grandchild; his wife; four step daughters; twelve step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel and Thelma Smith; and a sister, Barbara Smith Peters. The funeral was Saturday at Harry McKneely and Son Funeral Home, Pontchatoula, with burial in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. January 22, 2003 The Kentwood News Ledger Winsel "Dick" Blades Winsel "Dick" Blades died at 11:15am on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite. He was 77, a native of Tangipahoa Parish and a resident of Kentwood. Religious services were held at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, conducted by Rev. Mason Miley and Rev. Burdette Thomas, interment in the Spring Creek Cemetery, Spring Creek. He is survived by three daughters, Pat Smith, Gulfport, MS, Bonnie McDaniel and Cheryl Guthrie, both of Kentwood, three sons, Jim Brant, Phoenix, AZ, Dickie and Bary Blades, both of Kentwood; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Napoleon and Dola Varnado Blades; four sisters, Doris Kreh, Thelma McDaniel, Idell Phillips and Margaret Blades; and a brother, Laverne Blades. January 29, 2003 The Kentwood News Ledger Julia Langford Julia Langford died at 10pm on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Dixon Medical Center in Denham Springs. She was 94, a native of Yazoo County, MS and a resident of Kentwood. She was an RN and dedicated her life to the care of others as a registered nurse. Religious services were held at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, conducted by Rev. Randal Garcia, interment in the Spring Creek Cemetery, Spring Creek. She is survived by two nieces, Beth Posts, New Orleans and Judy McElveen, Spring creek; a nephew, Bobby Langford, Spring Creek She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Varnado and Ethel Langford; a brother and sister in law, John and Ethel J. Langford. Norma Margaret Verberne Norma M. Verberne died on Sunday, January 19, 2003 at her residence. She was 81, a native of Donaldsonville and a resident of Franklinton. She was a housewife. Religious services were held at McKneely Funeral Home Kentwood, conducted by Rev. Cecil Painter, interment in Verberne Cemetery, Spring Creek. She is survived by her husband, Philip E. Verberne Sr., Franklinton; four sons, David Verberne, Amite, Wayne Verberne, Kentwood, Terry Verberne, Franklinton and Randy Verberne, Spokane, WA; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Philip E. Verberne Jr. and two brothers, Calvin and Whitney Rodriguez.
