MELVINA HAMMOND FIELDS-CRUMES Melvina Hammond Fields-Crumes, 82, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at her home. She was a native of Thomasville, Ga., and a homemaker. She is survived by one stepdaughter, Denise Fields-Macom of Oakland, Calif.; three sisters, Ella Gorman of Hammond, Doretha Hammond Jacob of Dallas and Coludia Mae Hammond-Ross of Houston; one brother, Sumpter Hammond; and 13 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Berry and Merenvia Hammond, and a son, Richard "Dimples" Fields. "Dub" Benefield Jr., 78, a retired Exxon technician, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was a native of Greenlaw and served with the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Clara B. Benefield of Kentwood; four daughters, Eva Marie Liles, Elizabeth B. Simmons and Bonnie B. Carlin, all of Kentwood, and Bridget B. Miller of Rayne; a sister, Marie Bass of Mt. Ida, Ark.; three brothers, Frank D. NACE RAYMOND GRAZIANO AMITE - Nace Raymond Graziano, 80, a native and resident of Amite, died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at his home. He was a carpenter and had served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Bertone Graziano of Amite; three sons, Philip Anthony Graziano of Independence, Arthur C. Graziano of Hammond and Richard Nace Graziano of Hattiesburg, Miss.; a sister, Rosalie Graziano Lucido of Independence; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His parents were the late Joseph and Angelina Pollardo Graziano. Seven siblings also preceded him in death. Ron West, who served as Hammond's recreation director for 12 years, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Northshore Regional Medical Center in Slidell of a massive heart attack. Ron West, 49, devoted his life to helping people, especially kids, his wife Patricia "Tracy" West said Monday. At the time of his death, West worked with the local Area Health Education Center , conducting STD and HIV awareness presentations, his wife said. He also worked nights as a substance abuse counselor at the 22nd Judicial District Drug Court in St. Tammany Parish. "I think that was the love of his life," she said of his counseling work. "He said if he could reach just one young person, he had accomplished something." But it's his work for Hammond's Recreation Department that most people may remember West for. Under mayors Debbie Saik-Pope, Tom Anderson and Charlie McCaskle, he worked hard to maintain children's programs, even when his department's budget was routinely cut, his wife said. The Yazoo City, Miss., native lived with his extended family in Morgan City, Miss., until the ninth or tenth grade, she said. He then moved to Hammond to live with his mother. West studied therapuetic recreation at Grambling University before earning a substance abuse counseling degree from Southern University in New Orleans, his wife said. The couple met at Grambling and was married for 27 years. "I know I can be proud of the person he was and the things that he did for people and the influence he made on a lot of young people's live," she said. SPRINGFIELD - Calvin Clifford Fayard Sr., 95, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, of respiratory complications. A native of Springfield, he was a produce inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and later owned and operated a retail business in Springfield. He served as the town marshal and was later elected to the Town Council and the Livingston Parish School Board where he served as president of the board. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion. He was an active and contributing member of the Livingston Parish American Revolution Bicentennial Committee and helped organize the Edward Livingston Historical Association. He worked on numerous community projects including the Springfield Heritage Festival and parade, Cleanest City competition and the Springfield Fire Department. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Katherine Abels Fayard; one son, Calvin C. Fayard Jr. of Denham Springs; a brother, Simpson A. Fayard of Springfield; and three grandchildren. MARY EDNA BUSH BALES Visitation for Mary Edna Bush Bales, founder of the Hammond Recreation Commission and former head of the Women's Athletic Department at Southeastern Louisiana University, will be tonight in Hammond. The 90-year-old native of Jonesboro died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at East Jefferson Hospital. Bales graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport in 1928, attended Centenary College for two years and graduated from Louisiana State Normal School (Northwestern) in 1932. She did her graduate study at Texas University, University of Colorado and Peabody and received her master's of science degree from Louisiana State University in 1941. She served as a professor at SLU from 1934 until 1969 where she headed the Women's Athletic Department. Bales initiated the formation of the Hammond Recreation Commission and served as chairman from 1956 until 1971 and served as superintendent of the Hammond Recreation Department from 1971 until 1976. She also headed the Girl Scout program in Hammond for 15 years, served on the Southeast Louisiana Girl Scout Council, served as president of the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, served on the committee as secretary for girl's and women's sports of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, was a member and served as president of the local Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority (honorary sorority of women of education). Bales also served as instructor in AARP defensive driving program for 14 years, was selected by the Hammond Kiwanis Club as the Citizen of the Year in 1953, was the recipient of the "Honors Award" given by the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1959, was selected in 1974 by the Northwestern Louisiana University Health and Physical Education Department as Distinguished Alumnus. In 1982, she was inducted by the Hammond Junior Auxiliary into the Hall of Fame, participated in the U.S. Tennis Association doubles and singles in the 1970s and 1980s, participated in various tennis leagues and participated in the Senior Olympics Tennis in 1986 winning singles and doubles and Senior Olympics Golf in 1986 placing second and first in 1988. Longtime friend and golf buddy Barbara McKaskle described Bales as "probably one of the most competitive people that I've ever known." Bales' stamina and competitive spirit kept her active her entire life, she said. "I thought a lot of her, as did a lot of people," McKaskle said. "(She had) a long and memorable professional career, because she touched so many people's lives." Bales is survived by one daughter, Mary Sue Bales Edwards of Metairie; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren. LINDA HOLLIE NEWMAN Linda Hollie Newman, 54, died Friday, March 29, 2002, in Independence. She was a native of Ponchatoula and resident of Hammond. Survivors include her husband, James E. Newman, Hammond; daughters Trudy Marie Newman of Goodbee, and Bridgett Lynnette Deslatte and Tammy Lynn Carter, both of Robert; sons Douglas Keith Carter of Loranger and Jim Harvey Carter Jr. and Jamie Newman, both of Hammond; brother Larry Hollie of Ponchatoula; sisters Sandra Kay Durbin of Hammond and Jackie Randall, Sherl Abbess and Terry McDaniel, all of Ponchatoula; 18 grandchildren and a great- granddaughter. Her parents were the late Eli and Essie Dykes Hollie. Her first husband, Jim Harvey Carter Sr., and brothers Elsie Lawrence and Eli Vincent Hollie also preceded her in death. Visitiation will be at Harry McKneely and Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula today from 6 to 10 p.m. The funeral will be at the funeral home chapel Monday at 10 a.m., with burial in Ponchatoula Cemetery.
