Michael Carona dies at 66 March 19, 2003 The funeral for Louis Michael Carona, owner of Carona's Baker in Hammond, will be Friday. The 66-year-old native and resident of Independence died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He and his wife, Bobbye, opened Carona's Bakery, which was to become a Hammond landmark, in 1966. He had begun working for his father-in-law shortly after he and his wife were married. Carona first worked for Hulen Mashon, owner of Mashon's Bakery, a well-known establishment in Tangipahoa Parish. His first job was to run the French bread route, which went out at 2:30 every morning. He then progressed to being in charge of making doughnuts, cookies, pies and many other pastries. He was basically in charge of the daytime crew while his wife worked in the bakery as the head cake decorator and clerk. After about five years, the couple began to think about opening their own bakery. In November 1966, they leased a building near the A&P. They borrowed an oven from Mashon's Bakery, received an old mixer from an uncle and bought some used showcases from a friend. They moved this equipment in and soon opened the doors to the first location of Carona's Bakery where they stayed for two years. In 1968, they moved across from the Toggery Shop on Thomas Street, and the business grew. That year, they joined the Deep South Association and were the youngest couple in the group. Carona was on the board of directors for more than 20 years and was a former president of the association. They moved to the current Market Street location in 1978 and built their own building there. In 1981, they hosted one of the Deep South Bakery workshops in their new location. This function brought more than 100 bakers to Hammond for three days. Carona's Bakery is a family affair. Carona's daughter, Karla, and her husband, Mark Booth, opened a bakery in Independence in 2000 carrying on the family tradition. The Caronas were part of the very first Richard Murphy Hospice Gala and have made every single one since its existence. The Caronas knew Murphy personally because they have done Jacmel's bread since its existence. Carona was supportive of all programs at Southeastern Louisiana University and was excited about once again having the opportunity to get involved in the Lion's football program.
