He attended Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, and the University of Rhode Island. He was owner and president of Meadowbrook Realty of North Kingstown, and a member of the Multiple Listing Service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a former president of the 5th Quarter Club at URI, and a member of the Ram Athletic Association. He was a member and past master of Charity Lodge 23, F&AM, in Charleston. He was also a member of the York Rite, council and chapter; the Scottish Rite, consistory; and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, MASSASOIT Forest 91. He was a licensed helicopter pilot. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran having served in the Pacific, he was a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University where he earned a bachelor's of arts degree and later went on to earn a Master's Degree in Music at Louisiana State University. He was a retired music educator, having served as a bandmaster at Sulphur and Hammond High School, and instructed woodwinds at Southeastern University. While teaching he maintained a performing career with the Lake Charles and Beaumont Symphony as well as a free lance musician in New Orleans. In 1966, he was honored as Band Director of the Year, and was inducted into the Musical Hall of Fame at Southeastern Louisiana University. Armato Sr. died Sunday, July 27, 2003. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Africa and Sicily, and worked for Barney Carey for 30 years, first as a driver, then in a supervisory position. He is survived by two sons, Michael J. Armato Jr. and Gary Armato; three daughters, Lena Agnello, Judy Lato and Cherri Tyler; seven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. The funeral was today. She was a native of Independence, a resident of Hammond and a graduate of Loranger High School. She received a bachelor of science degree from Southeastern Louisiana University and a master's in education degree from Louisiana State University. A retired school teacher, she taught at Sweetwater, Loranger, Ponchatoula and Houston schools for more than 40 years. During World War II, she was director of Shipyard Homes Child Care Center and a volunteer tutor at Natalbany Baptist School. She was a member of Tangipahoa Retired Teachers Association, Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames 17th Century. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Clay Atkins; her father, Archibald D. Hanes; her mother, Mary Bankston Hanes Pittman; and two brothers, A.D. Hanes Jr. and J.K. Hanes. NEVA HOOVER SHARP Neva "Janie" Hoover Sharp, 92, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. She was a native of Ponchatoula, a resident of Hammond and the first woman carpenter hired at Higgins Shipyard in 1942. Her portrait is on display at the D-Day Museum in New Orleans. She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Sharp of Ponchatoula and Tommie Jane Sharp Dunaway of Slidell; one son, Henry Philip Sharp of Baton Rouge; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Peter and Emma Perrin Hoover; her husband, Forrest Philip Sharp; seven brothers and three sisters.
