She was a native of Greenville, Miss.; was the oldest living graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University; received a master's degree from Louisiana State University; was twice regent of the Tangipahoa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; was a member of the Fern Leaf Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star; was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Hammond; and was retired from the Tangipahoa Parish School System, having served as librarian at Hammond High School. "Hallie" Catalano, 80, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. A native and resident of Independence, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the Medial Corps with a rank of sergeant. He received two purple hearts and a bronze star. He was a former employee with the state department of health and sanitation, former owner of Catalano Meat Co. and Hallie's AG Food Mart. He served two terms as a member of the Independence Board of Aldermen beginning in 1948 and was a Tangipahoa Parish School Board member from 1963 to 1973. He also had served as chairman of the Independence Housing Authority for 20 years. He was president of Colonial Cemetery Association, a member of the Independence Lions Club and American Legion Post 109 and a charter member of the Indepen-dence Knights of Columbus, Council 5627.
