He was a native of Neshoba County, Miss., and World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was in insurance adjuster for GMAC. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Montalbano Burton, McComb; his sister, Annie Ruth McMullen, River Ridge; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sue Walker; his son, Bobby Burton; and his brother, Leon Burton. Visitation will be today at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 10 a.m. until the funeral at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dennis Walker will conduct the service. Burial will be in Killian Chapel Cemetery, Hillsdale. CHARLES EDWARD CARROLL SR. SLIDELL - Charles Edward Carroll Sr., 58, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at his residence. He was a native of the Hammond/Pumpkin Center area and was a Slidell resident for 38 years. He was the publisher of the NorthShore Times, owner/operator of Mr. Charles Styling Salon and Mr. Charles Carpet and Interiors. He was a parishioner of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Badon Carroll; his children, Charles E. "Chuck" Carroll Jr., and Shawn Carroll Morris, both of Slidell; his siblings, Pierce, Wallace and Ardy Carroll, all of El Dorado, Ark., David Carroll, Amite, Vernel Carroll Strate, Hammond, Velda Carroll, New Orleans, and Tommie Sue White, Centerville, Miss.; and four grandchildren. BATON ROUGE - Johnny J. Caston Sr., 78, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000. He was a native of Hammond, a retired drill sergeant in the U.S. Army and a veteran of World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam War. He was an expert marksman, an avid gardener and a member of Teamsters Local 5. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, VFW Zachary Taylor Post 3784 and American Legion Ellis Facundus Post No. 178. Survivors include his wife, Lula Mae Caston, Baton Rouge; three daughters, Norma Jean Minter, Judy Diane Kinchen and Brenda Faye Zumo; two sons, Johnny J. STANLEY NEWELL GALLOWAY Stanley Newell Galloway, 85, former head coach at Southeastern, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was a graduate of Lyon High School in Covington and Southeastern Louisiana University. He had owned Mitey Muffler in Hammond. During his coaching career, he was head coach at Donaldsonville, Hammond and Bogalusa high schools as well as at Southeastern. The Air Force selected him to conduct football clinics in Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1962 and sent him to Honolulu, Tokyo, Wake Island and Korea to conduct more clinics in 1963. He was a commissioner of Louisiana State Colleges and Universities and helped form and commission the Gulf States Conference. Galloway was elected to the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, the SLU Hall of Fame and received special recognition from the Louisiana Football and Basketball Officials Association. She was 89, a native of St. Louis, She was a founder and president of the American Needlepoint Guild and won national and international prizes for her needlepoint. She also served on boards of the National and International American Needlepoint Guilds and frequently served as a judge in their competitions. She served on the boards of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Orleans Gallery, the Repertory Theatre, the St. Tammany Heart Association and the State Board of the Louisiana Council of Music and the Performing Arts. A chair in fine arts at Tulane University is named in her honor. Pieces of her needlework appear in the Peace Rug at the United Nations Building, the Bird and Flower Rug at the Chicago Botanical Garden, the State Seal of Louisiana in the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in Washington, D.C., and in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. She was chair of the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society for Tangipahoa Parish. She was elected to the Hammond Junior Auxiliary's Hall of Fame for her work in the community. LEAH RICHE COUVILLION BATON ROUGE - Leah Riche Couvillion, 86, a homemaker and native of Simmesport, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at St. Clare Manor. She was a former member of Ladies Altar Society of St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church. Survivors include five daughters, Elaine Hughes, Baton Rouge, Carmen Marionneaux, St. Francisville, Sister Leah Marie (Elsie) Couvillion, S.S.N.D., Lahore, Pakistan, Janie Babin, Beaumont, Texas, and Linda Moore, Hammond; two brothers, Herbert Riche, Simmesport, Huey Riche, Minden; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Lester E. Couvillion; two sisters, Lily and Rita; and four brothers, Allen, Percy, Milburn and Wiltz, preceded her in death. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home, Baton Rouge, tonight from 5 to 8 and Tuesday at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church from 8:30 a.m. until the funeral at 10:30. The Rev. She was a native of Brookhaven, Miss., a retired school bus driver for East Feliciana Parish and was a member of Manor Baptist Church, Slaughter. She was born in Charleston, S.C., and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and past historian, and a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution. She worked with the American Red Cross for more than 50 years. She is survived by her son, Judge John Burgess of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Donald Burgess. The Rev. Jack Walenbach will conduct the funeral Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, Fort Walton Beach, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery.
