BILOXI - Hammond native and longtime resident of the coast, Walter Louis Himel Sr., 70, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003. He was the former owner of Himel Auto Parts in North Biloxi and retired from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Perkinston Campus where he was the first instructor and helped develop the automotive sales and management courses. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and Biloxi Elks Lodge 606. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Survivors include two sons, Walter Louis Himel Jr. of Biloxi and Scott Dennis Himel of Meridian, Miss.; two brothers, Ray Himel of New Iberia and Jamie Himel of Morgan City; three sisters, Marjorie Galloway of Hammond, Dorothy Koen of Memphis, Tenn., and Patsy Gill of Slidell; and two grandchildren. She graduated from Kentwood High School, Louisiana State Normal College and the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. At Ponchatoula High she inaugurated the girls physical education program in 1938, teaching and coaching in all of the girls varsity sports programs until her retirement in 1972. She served as faculty sponsor to the Wavettes, cheerleaders and the PHS Girls Letter Club for many years. After retiring from the school system, she was a dealer and manager with Engen Sales Co., a Tupperware distributorship for 19 years and traveled all over the world before retiring to Belle Maison Nursing Home. She was a past member of the Ponchatoula Gardenettes and attended the First Baptist Church where she was active with the WMU and Lottie Moon Circle. She earned a registered nurse degree from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and a bachelor of science degree and master's degree in art education from Purdue University.
