He was an early pioneer of Hammond; a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Funeral was Wednesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church; interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. He is survived by one son, Wallace; one daughter, Mrs. Andrew M. Edwards, Jr., the wife of Ponchatoula's mayor; two grandchildren; five brothers, two being present at the funeral and burial; they came from Ohio. 5 Jul 1940; p. 1, col. 4: Mrs. G. E. Strickland died Wednesday at her home in Lajolla, CA after an illness of one year. She was a frequent visitor of J. M. Shurlocks. 5 Jul 1940; p. 2, col. 2: Thomas Peach Wilson, a resident of Hammond since 1922, died Saturday. He was born 8 Jan 1879 in Frankland. Services were at family residence on Sunday, followed by services in Franklin at the Methodist church; buried in little cemetery near banks of Teche. Survived by widow, the former Elise Dreher, and a number of nieces and nephews. 5 Jul 1940; Sec. 2, p. 4, col. 4: Mrs. Lucy Latino, 76, a resident of Hammond the past 35 years, died Saturday at her home. Funeral services were held Monday; interment in Rose Memorial cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Latino; children, Charles Latino and Mrs. Josephine Fardella; 30 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. 12 Jul 1940; p. 1, col. 2: William Richmond, known on the Tangipahoa river as Barnacle Bill, died in New Orleans after an illness of one week. He was retired from the U.S. Navy; lived on a houseboat south of Lee's Landing. [Date of death not given.] 12 Jul 1940; p. 2, col. 5: Mrs. W. A. Armstrong died Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. H. Kopfler, in Roseland where she had lived the past 12 years. Funeral services at Roseland Saturday; interment in Amite cemetery. She was born in Lexington, MO on 10 Oct 1851; the former Margaret Elley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Elley. Her grandfather, the Rev. Thomas Elley, Sr., was a Christian minister in Lexington, KY. In 1873 she married William Armstrong, who died 30 June 1938. They lived in Iowa before moving to Hammond 40 years ago. She was the mother of seven children; Mrs. Kopfler is the only one surviving. Also survived by eight grandchildren: Mrs. John Hendry of Roseland, Clifford Armstrong, Mrs. Harry Starnes, C. G. Edward and Mary Florence Kidder of Hammond, Tom Kidder of Memphis, TN, Jack Kidder of Baton Rouge; two great grandchildren, Mary Helen Starnes and Marion Ruth Kidder of Hammond; her step-mother, Mrs. Katherine Elley of Marshaltown, IA who is 101 years old; three half-sisters and one half-brother, Mrs. Ed Gilner of Marshaltown, Mrs. Gertrude Cox of Florida and Mrs. Charles Dean, and George Elley of Colorado. 12 Jul 1940; p. 4, col. 6: Frank Bruskay, 81, of Albany section, died Friday, July 5th. Funeral was held Sunday, July 7th in Albany. He is survived by one son; Louis Bruskay; three daughters, Mrs. Jennie Chemay, wife of Louis Chemay of Hammond, Rosie and Marie Bruskay. 19 Jul 1940; p. 1, col. 3: John L. Jackson, 85, resident of Saginaw, MI for many years, died at his home, June 29th. He married Mrs. Florence Vollmer of Hammond on 14 March 1916. 19 Jul 1940; p. 1, col. 4: Mrs. Leonard Clayton Ginn, former Miss Jane Briggs of Hammond, died Wednesday at Albuquerque, NM. Her mother is Mrs. C. A. Barksdale of Hammond. Jane was married in Albuquerque on March 15th of this year. Funeral services are to be held this morning in Liberty, MO from the family home of Mrs. Barksdale. 19 Jul 1940; p. 2, col. 5: Mr. D. Arthur Joiner, 57, died Monday, July 8th at the Florida Parishes hospital in Independence. He was born and reared in Tangipahoa parish. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Eva Joiner [from card of thanks on page 3]; two daughters; two granddaughters; his aged father and numerous relatives. Buried July 10th in Catholic cemetery. 19 Jul 1940; p. 6, col. 4: Kentwood, La., July 13 - Samuel Louis Broyles, pioneer merchant of Kentwood, died at his home here Saturday. Funeral Sunday at Kentwood Methodist church. He was born 17 Feb 1863 in Perryville, KY; came to Kentwood in 1891 where he began the first general store, which he was still conducting. He was Kentwood's first postmaster in 1896; a position now held by his son, J. H. Broyles. He married in 1887 to Miss Theresa Kent, granddaughter of Amos Kent the founder of Kentwood. He is survived by his wife and following sons and daughters; Mrs. John Shoemake of Kentwood, Mrs. J. E. Guess of Hammond, Mrs. Otto Hervig of Laurel, MS, James Holcombe Broyles of Kentwood, Mrs. Elmer Rubush of Jackson, MS, Mrs. Clara Holbrook and Mrs. George Neelis of Hammond, Willis Broyles of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Alvin Marmillion of Ponchatoula, Miss Helen Broyles, Frederick Broyles and Mrs. S. E. Dean of Kentwood; 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. 26 Jul 1940; p. 1, col. 1: Robert McMichael died at his home south of Amite Friday after a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of Amite; son of the late James McMichael of Amite. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. James McMichael; one daughter, Miss Bobbie McMichael, both of Amite; two brothers, J. A. McMichael of Port Arthur, TX and Nelville McMichael of Amite; two sisters, Miss Nina McMichael of Amite and Mrs. Wallace McCloy of Amite and formerly of McComb; an aunt, Mrs. J. L. Services were held today; burial in Zion Hill cemetery near Natalbany. 2 Aug 1940; p. 3, col. 5: Roseland, La., July 26 - Mrs. Belle Osborn Reichert, wife of Mayor E. D. Reichert of Roseland, died Thursday. She was born in Akron, Ohio 2 Oct 1879; came to Roseland as a young child and has lived here since. She is survived by her husband, E. D. Reichert; father, R. W. Osborn, Sr. of Roseland; two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. George Arrowsmith, Mrs. M. H. Hendry and R. W. Osborn, Jr., all of Roseland, Tom Osborn of Jackson, LA, William M. Osborn of Hattiesburg, MS and Archie Osborn of Baton Rouge. 9 Aug 1940; p. 3: Charles H. Brigger, 19, formerly of Hammond was killed while scaling logs in Carthage, MS on August 2nd. 9 Aug 1940; p. 5, col. 6: Jacob Verberg, a resident of Hammond since 1910, died Thursday. He was born in Kortzene, Holland on 2 March 1867; came to the U.S. in 1887; naturalized 8 Dec 1904. He was a landscape gardener. Funeral was at family residence; interment in New Orleans. Survivors include two sons, Arthur Gerald and Herbert Leonard Verberg; two daughters, Mrs. John Freiler of Canton and Mrs. Juliana Graves of Hammond; four grandchildren. 9 Aug 1940; p. 6, col. 4: Arthur T. Gomila, 68, former resident of Hammond, died at his home in New Orleans last Sunday. Services were Monday; interment in Metairie cemetery. He is survived by the widow, former Mary Ella Wiggin of Houston, TX; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Emmett Kerrigan of New Orleans; four sons, A. T. Gomila, Jr. of Newport News, VA, J. C. and John Gordon Gomila of New Iberia and Torrey Gomila of New Orleans; one brother, Joseph Gomila of Atlanta, GA. Kerrigan of Hammond. Mr. Gomila was related to families of Mrs. E. L. McGehee and C. C. Carters. 16 Aug 1940; p. 3, col. 5: Mrs. Ivy Thompson died last week in Jackson, MS. She was the eldest sister of Mrs. Z. Z. Linton of Hammond. Mrs. Thompson and husband would have celebrated 60th wedding anniversary in November. 16 Aug 1940; p. 4, col. 7: Ponchatoula, La., Aug. 14 - Robert Edward Howes died Wednesday; services Thursday; interment in Ponchatoula cemetery. He was born 19 March 1856; one of Ponchatoula's oldest citizens. His wife, the late Eva Spencer, died February 27th of this year. He is survived by one son, R. Matt Howes and one daughter, Mrs. Jules Lavigne, both of whom reside in Ponchatoula. Since his wife's death, he has lived at the home of granddaughter, Mrs. Marion Snell. 16 Aug 1940; Sec. 2, p. 1, col. 3: Mr. Charles R. Dreher, 85, died Saturday, 11 Aug 1940, at the home of his daughter. He came to Hammond in 1901. Services were Sunday; interment in Greenlawn cemetery. Survived by widow and six children, Mrs. F. L. Tolle of Baton Rouge, Mrs. C. E. June and Mrs. T. P. Wilson of Hammond, Mrs. D. P. Olivier of Franklin, Charles W. Dreher of Roseland and Fred H. Dreher of Jackson, MS. He has a sister, who is 96 years of age, living in Baton Rouge. Three nephews, Jim Lipscomb and R. D. Lipscomb of Baton Rouge and Charlie Lipscomb of Hammond acted as pallbearers. 23 Aug 1940; p. 1, col. 2: Emile Elias Saik, 53, died Friday at Baptist Hospital in New Orleans; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery in Hammond. He came to Hammond more than 30 years ago. Survived by the widow; two sons, Ellis and Saleen; two daughters, Misses Marie and Sarah. 23 Aug 1940; p. 1, col. 6: Hylton, J. Harrison died Saturday at the home of his father-in-law, Postmaster J. M. Blache, Sr. His wife was the former, Shirley Blache. Funeral Saturday; interment in Greenlawn cemetery. 23 Aug 1940; p. 1, col. 7: Mrs. W. B. Jordan, 62, wife of Mayor William B. Jordan, died Monday. Funeral held Tuesday. She was a native of Como, MS; lived in New Orleans for 20 years; lived in Hammond the past 20 years. Survived by husband; one brother, Douglas Allen of Ponchatoula; four sisters, Mrs. Sumpter Davis of Hammond, Mrs. Stevie Wellner of McComb, MS, Mrs. S. L. Varnado of Jackson, MS and Mrs. E. L. Zansler of New Orleans. 23 Aug 1940; Sec. 2, p. 1, col. 1: Mrs. N. P. Smith died August 10th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Florence Vollmer Jackson in Saginaw, MI. Also present at her death were daughters, Mrs. Philo Goodwin, Mrs. Walton Gatlin and Mrs. Clarissa Faust. She was a former resident of Hammond and at the Kentwood home of Mrs. Gatlin. 23 Aug 1940; Sec. 2, p. 1, col. 6: Louis P. "Pink" Ashley died Saturday. Funeral was held Sunday; interment at Kentwood, his boyhood home. He was a native of Hazelhurst, MS; lived in Hammond the past 18 years. Survivors include his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Herbert Verburg; two sons, Herman and I. W.; three brothers, Leroy of Morrilton, AR, Calvin of Vicksburg, MS and Robert of Harrisonburg, LA; three sisters, Miss Annie Ashley of Clinton, LA, Mrs. David Bowles of Clinton, MS and Mrs. Mary Verberg of Hammond; stepmother, Mrs. Nelson Asley of Hammond. 23 Aug 1940; Sec. 2, p. 4, col. 3: Three men were killed in a car accident Sunday: James C. Baker, 32; Byron Griffin, 26; Joe C. Cinquemano, 23; all of Baton Rouge; all married. Cinquemano is survived by his widow. Baker is survived by his widow, the former Hazel Felder of Hammond; one son, James Allen; mother, Mrs. G. W. Baker; three sisters, Mrs. Gaston Adams, Mrs. Ruby Lee Baker and Mrs. Doris Baker all of Ponchatoula. His funeral was Monday; interment in Kentwood cemetery. Griffon is survived by his widow, the former Anna Brannon. 30 Aug 1940; p. 3, col. 4: Miss Fauzza Parker died August 19th at her home east of Hammond; interment was in Robertson cemetery. Survivors include two brothers, Charlie Parker of Shreveport and Mines Parker of Madisonville; four sisters, Mrs. Vernie Daniel, Miss Lela Parker, Mrs. Florence Daniel, Mrs. Katie Templet; six nieces and two nephews, all of Hammond. 30 Aug 1940; p. 5, col. 5: Rev. Hosea Price died Wednesday at his home in Fernwood, MS; funeral will be Friday in Fernwood. He lived in Tangipahoa parish before becoming a minister. 30 Aug 1940; p. 5, col. 5: Mrs. Murphy J. Sylvest, 45, wife of director of teacher training at Southeastern College, died Thursday in Baton Rouge. Services will be today at Franklin. She was the former Jennie Burris of Franklinton. Survived by her husband and one adopted daughter, Mary Anne, and a number of relatives in Washington parish. 13 Sep 1940; p. 3, col. 6: I. R. Addison, of Amite, in his 77th year, died in New Orleans Friday. Most of his life was spent in Tangipahoa parish, except several years in New Jersey while his son worked on a newspaper. Services were Saturday in Amite; interment in Amite City cemetery. Survived by his wife and only son, Leland, of Amite. 20 Sep 1940; p. 1, col. 7: B. Varisco died Wednesday in Hammond. Born in Villefratte, Italy on 16 Aug 1870, he came to the U.S. 43 years ago; resident of Hammond for 37 years. Services will be today at Holy Ghost Catholic church; interment in Rose Memorial cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Ann Call Varisco; eight children, Mrs. Tony Cognato, Mrs. Frances Magro, Mrs. A. Magro and Joseph Varisco, all of Hammond, Mrs. Jos. Many family and friends. 27 Sep 1940; p. 1, col. 2: Blass Spiller, 69, died Wednesday in Hammond. Services were Thursday in Hammond; interment in Ponchatoula cemetery. Survived by the widow, the former Lulia Lewis of New Orleans; three daughters, Mrs. William Callender of Haynesville, Mrs. Joe Decell of St. Louis, MO and Mrs. Sedgie Newson of Hammond. The deceased was a cousin of Attorney A. Wood Spiller of Hammond. 27 Sep 1940; p. 4, col. 5: Robert Starkey, 61, died at his home in Baton Rouge; services were in Baton Rouge last Friday; interment in Roselawn cemetery in Baton Rouge. He was a native of Roseland; left the parish 29 years ago; spent 19 years in Baton Rouge. Survivors include his widow; five sons, Archie, Charlie, Johnny, Woodrow and Jesse, all of Baton Rouge; two daughters, Mary Starkey and Mrs. Flynn Dawson, both of Baton Rouge; five brothers, J. E. of Baton Rouge, Henry of Arkansas, Murray and Charlie of Florida and Patrick of Mississippi; several grandchildren. 4 Oct 1940; p. 1: Dr. Homer Gates, formerly of Ponchatoula, died last Friday, Sept. 27th, at his home in Franklin; services Saturday with interment in Franklin cemetery. Survived by his widow; immediate family and nephew, Dr. Richard Gates of Hammond. 18 Oct 1940; p. 4, col. 2: George L. Thompson, 47, died in a New Orleans hospital Thursday of last week. Services were Friday at Bethlehem church; interment there. He was employed by Illinois Central railroad since he was 16 years old. The family resided in Hammond many years. Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Jean and Marie Thompson of New Orleans, together with a large family connection in and near Hammond. 25 Oct 1940; Sec. 2, p. 1: In Memoriam - Lee Ervin, born 3 Feb 1883, died 22 Oct 1939 - wife, daughters and grandchildren. 25 Oct 1940; p. 1, col. 4: Mrs. Emily Lancon Moore of Franklin, mother of Lloyd Moore, of Hammond, died. Services were held in Louisa last Friday; interment in Louisa cemetery. 1 Nov 1940; p. 2, col. 2: James P. Magee, 80, of Franklinton, died Tuesday at the home of his step-son, F. A. Garrett, in Baton Rouge. Services were Thursday; interment in Springhill cemetery. He is survived by his wife, the former Flora Jane Garrett; three sons, Jewel Magee of Hammond, T. A. Survived by widow; two sons, Lynell and Glynn; and a vast number of relative scattered over Tangipahoa parish. Funeral was Thursday at Ponchatoula; interment at Amite. 8 Nov 1940; p. 1, col. 7: William Hardy Starns, born 10 Aug 1886, son of the late Mrs. and Mrs. A. D. Starns, died Wednesday at the family home north of Albany. He was a native of Louisiana but for the past 15 years lived in Texas. Services Thursday at New Hope church near Albany; interment in the Durbin cemetery. Survived by two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Robertson and Mrs. E. H. Hinson of Independence; two brothers, Martin and Edward Starns of Independence; several nieces and nephews. 8 Nov 1940; p. 4, col. 4: Mrs. G. R. Terwilliger died Thursday, Oct. 31st, at her home in Independence. Funeral services were Friday. She was born in Independence, 28 June 1900; the only child of the late, John Strickland, and his wife Minnie. She married Gurney R. Terwilliger about seven years ago. Her mother survives. He is related to many leading families in Tangipahoa parish. He married Miss Madge Verberg of Hammond; they lived in Canton, MS and Clinton, LA. Kent of Fluker, Mrs. E. D. Kent and Mrs. A. B. Lee of Kentwood. 8 Nov 1940; p. 4, col. 7: Mrs. Antonia Taravella, of Independence, died Sunday. Funeral was Sunday in Independence with burial in Colonial cemetery. She was related to many leading citizens, including the Alessi and Cucchiara families. She lived in Hammond for the past 38 years. She was born in California, MO 29 Sept. 1847; widow of the late H. A. Carroll who died in 1881. Funeral was today; remains taken to California, MO for burial on Saturday. Survived by two sons, H. William Carroll, city tax collector of Hammond and H. Eldridge Carroll, Hammond realtor. 22 Nov 1940; p. 1, col. 2: Mrs. Mary Tycer, widow of the late Robert M. Tycer, died Tuesday in Hammond. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 25 January 1933; later their 55th. Funeral was held Thursday; interment in Greenlawn cemetery beside the body of her husband who died two years ago. Survivors include five sons, Judge Nat B. Tycer, Walter, Henry, Charlie and Morris Tycer; five daughters, Mrs. A. B. Day, Mrs. Allen Stevens, Mrs. Frank Goblowsky, Mrs. Galen Norman and Miss Flora Tycer; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Fendlason and Mrs. Spencer Bahkston; one brother, Ivy Bankston. 22 Nov 1940; p. 1, col. 4: Services for Walter Cambell "Foxey" Kent will be held at his former home in Kentwood Saturday. Interment will be in Kentwood cemetery. He was killed October 29th in China. 22 Nov 1940; p. 1, col. 4: Mrs. Champion Day (Rita Laura Smith Day), wife of the late Champion Day, died Sunday at her home in New Orleans. She was the mother of William "Tootsie" Day of Hammond. Funeral services were held Monday; interment in St. Louis cemetery No. 2 in New Orleans. 22 Nov 1940; p. 2, col. 5: Dr. W. H. Floyd, brother-in-law of Dr. J. Leon Clark, died yesterday in Alexandria. Funeral will be today or tomorrow. Dr. and Mrs. Clark left yesterday to attend the services. Merle Floyd, a son, was a member of Hammond High School football team several years ago. 22 Nov 1940; Sec. 2, p. 1, col. 3: Vincent Alfano, died Tuesday. Services were Wednesday with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park. Survivors include three sons, Oscar, Joe and Breese; three daughters, Mrs. John Micele and Mrs. Joe Pecora of Independence, and Mrs. Frank Micele of Hammond. 29 Nov 1940; p. 1, col. 6: Eldon Stephen Upton [pictured] died in Hammond, at the home of his daughter, last Monday. He was born 4 Dec 1850 in Bluffton, IN; went to New Orleans as a young man; founded the Upton Printing Company. Sons were associated with him in business, the late George M. Upton and E. C. Upton, Sr. Other of the family are daughter, Mrs. Jerone B. Lester, of Hammond, John M. Upton of Chicago, Mrs. D. R. Bertrand of Lake Charles, Mrs. W. W. Heard of Shreveport, Mrs. Charles Kinkade of New Orleans; ten grandchildren. Funeral and interment was in New Orleans Metairie cemetery. 29 Nov 1940; p. 3, col. 2: George Lewis Jones died in New Orleans Saturday, November 23rd. Burial was on Sunday at Maurepas in the cemetery near the Methodist church that he helped build. He was born in Miss. on 25 January 1852; came with his parents to Livingston parish as a youth and resided there until three years ago when he went to New Orleans to live with his daughter. Husband, Mantle Day, and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ralph Day, were seriously injured. Interment was in the Kentwood cemetery. He practiced law for 43 years. In 1907 he married Miss Kate Edwards, and to this union one son and two daughters survive, Robert Mixon, Miss Ruth Mixon of Amite and Miss Alice Mixon of Donaldsonville. To them was born a daughter. After being a widow for several years, she married Mr. Erlow Davis, and to them was born a son. The former Miss Philomena Sauve of Tampa, FL; she was the last surviving member of her family. Resided in New Orleans for 15 years before coming to Hammond. Funeral was Monday; interment in Greenlawn cemetery. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Genie Burt, a student at L.S.U.; two sons, T. H. He was a native of Brookhaven, MS; born 19 Jan 1858. Burial was in Naretta graveyard east of the Tangipahoa river. He was twice married. Survivors include his second wife, two daughters and five grandchildren. His daughters are, Mrs. R. L. Williams and Mrs. L. L. May of McComb, MS. Among his other relatives is Mrs. C. M. Mrs. Eugene Brakenridge, Leslie Whitaker and Alfred Bendily. Leslie Arthur Whitaker, 34, died Wednesday; services were Thursday. He was born at Toledo, Ohio; most of his life spent in St. Joseph, MO before coming to Ponchatoula two years ago. He married 9 Dec 1935 to Miss Mattie Burns of Ponchatoula. Surviving relatives are the widow; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Whitaker of Medford, OR; one brother, also of Medford; one sister, of Wayne, Nebr. Mrs. Eugene Brakenridge, the former Miss Emily Stewart, of Albany, died Friday. Services were Saturday; interment in Zion Hill cemetery. Survived by her husband, Eugene A. Brakenridge; one son, Charles Eugene; her mother, Mrs. Addie Stewart of Albany; three brothers, Tom, Kenner and B. K. Stewart; three sisters, Mrs. Morris Galloway, Mrs. L. H. Cleveland both of Ferriday and Mrs. Vincent Campo of Amite. Her son, age 7, and husband are still in Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Alfred Bendily, 55, a resident of Walker, died in a New Orleans hospital Saturday. Services were Sunday in Walker. He is survived by his widow; three daughters; one son; one brother; two sisters. Rohner, a native of Austria and Miss Catherine Casinover, a native of Switzerland. They came to this country in 1846 and farmed in the 5th Ward, Husser-Holton community. Services were November 15th at St. Dominic Catholic church, burial in church cemetery. Survived by his widow, Mrs, Odeal Holdridge Rohner; four sons, Luke, William, Edward of Holton, Murphy of Wilmer; two daughters, Mrs. W. M. Services were last Friday; interment in Antioch church cemetery. She was the widow of the late Lee Irwin who died two years ago. A former Hammond resident but living in Natalbany for a few years. Surviving relatives include two daughters, Mrs. Willie Watts and Mrs. Levy Watts; two granddaughters and four grandsons; one sister and four brothers. 5 Dec 1941; Sec. 2, p. 4, col. 6: Major Dunn, 53, a negro from Ponchatoula, was killed by a train on Monday. 12 Dec 1941; p. 1, col. 2: Beverly Ann Elliott, little daughter of Major and Mrs. E. D. Elliott, died in Houma Sunday. She was born in New Orleans 23 April 1939, their only child. Services were Monday at Bogalusa; interment in Bogalusa cemetery. 12 Dec 1941; Sec. 2, p. 2: Arthur "Butch" McNulty, Jr., age 4, died Saturday, the result of a fall from a car. Funeral was Monday in Covington. He was an only child. Survived by parents; Mrs. McNulty is the former Miss Teal Haik. 19 Dec 1941; p. 1, col. 5: Alva J.
