FitzSimons, known as "Miss Fanny" died Saturday in French Hospital in New Orleans. Funeral services were Sunday with interment in St. Joseph's Abbey near Covington. She is survived by three sisters, Miss Christine FitzSimons, Mrs. Charles H. Sheffield and Mrs. A. E. Stanga all of Covington; two brothers, Nic H. FitzSimons of Hammond and Francis J. FitzSimons of Covington. 2 Jan 1942; p. 1, col. 7: J. G. Morrow, Jr., 38, of Dallas, Texas died Sunday at Our Lady of the Lake sanitarium in Baton Rouge. [He had been injured last week in an auto accident.] He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Barbara 5 and Katherine 2; parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Morrow of Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. C. A. Conway of Muskogee, Okla. and Mrs. T. N. McCloed of Washington, D.C. 2 Jan 1942; p. 1, col. 7: Mrs. Alice Fourcade Kerrigan, widow of the late John Esmond Kerrigan, died Saturday night in Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. Funeral services were Sunday at Holy Ghost Catholic church with interment in Greenlawn cemetery in Hammond. Surviving relatives include one daughter, Mrs. Jack McCausland of New Orleans; three sons, Esmond and Emmett Kerrigan of New Orleans and Floubelle Kerrigan of Denver, Colo. 2 Jan 1942; p. 1, col. 1: Earl Hine, Jr. died Sunday morning at Camp Poke hospital from injuries suffered in an auto accident. His mother lives in New Iberia and has two other sons in the service. Earl was the oldest. Her husband died about four months ago in New Iberia. Mrs. Hines brother is Mr. James M. Fourmy. 2 Jan 1942; p. 3: In Memoriam - Loving memory of Mrs. Sam Alfonso, died 3 Jan. 1941 - missed by husband, daughter and son. 2 Jan 1942; p. 3, col. 6: Lucius Sandifer, 55, of Hammond, died Christmas morning at Florida Parishes hospital in Independence. [He had been hit by a car.] Funeral services and burial were last Friday. 2 Jan 1942; p. 4: Loranger News - Family and friends mourn the death of Mr. Frank DePhillips who died suddenly Tuesday of last week. 2 Jan 1942; p. 6: Card of Thanks - Death of beloved mother and grandmother - Mrs. Alice V. Quatreveaux - by Alice V. Tolle, Henry and Mildred Chappin. 9 Jan 1942; p. 1, col. 4: Miss Katie Leinhart, formerly of Hammond, died Saturday, Dec. 27th, in New Orleans. Funeral services were held the following day. 9 Jan 1942; p. 1, col. 7: Mack Cambre, 21, was found Monday on a yacht at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. His death was ruled a suicide. He had been a deck hand for four years. Funeral services were Wednesday at Killian. 9 Jan 1942; p. 3, col. 6: Barney Hooks, 83, died Wednesday in a New Orleans hospital. Funeral services were yesterday in Hammond with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. He was born in Mount Olive, Miss. and came to Hammond about 30 years ago. He is survived by his widow and nine children, Addie Henderson of Roseland, Mrs. E. A. Robinson of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Florence Hodges of Hammond, Mrs. H. D. Luring of Burbank, Calif., Mrs. Anna L. Bouchereaux of New Orleans, M. L. Myrtis Hooks of Baton Rouge and Clarence L., Charles S. and Claude E. Hooks of Hammond. 9 Jan 1942; p. 4, col. 4: Mrs. Gertrude Forbes of Baton Rouge passed away Tuesday at Our Lady of the Lake Sanitarium. Funeral services were Wednesday at Istrouma Baptist church with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park. The former Miss Gertrude Crews was a onetime resident of Hammond. She is survived by two daughters, Frankie, 13, and Evelyn, 12; mother, Mrs. T. E. Crews; one brother, Wilbur T. Crews; one sister, Mrs. A. T. Furr. 9 Jan 1942; Sec. 2, p. 1, col. 2: (Ponchatoula, La., Jan. 5) - Funeral services were held Monday for Charles Sutton, a native of Miss. and a resident many years of Ponchatoula. He was born in Lawrence Co., Miss. 7 July 1866. On 9 July 1894 he married Miss Dora E. Statham who survives with two sons, Wade H. Sutton of New Orleans and Charles Sutton of Ponchatoula; three daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Moreman of Clarksville, Va., Mrs. Gussie Schillings of Ponchatoula and Mrs. E. P. Kinchen, Jr. Burial was in the Ponchatoula cemetery. 9 Jan 1942; Sec. 2, p. 1, col. 7: Dr. Frank Downey Travis died Tuesday in a New Orleans hospital. Funeral services were Wednesday in Amite with burial in Amite cemetery. He was born in Gillsburg, Amite co., Miss. 22 Sept. 1885; married Miss Fanny Edwards 15 Dec 1915; moved to Ponchatoula in 1922. Survived by his widow; three daughters, Mrs. Lucia Jane Barker, Miss Sarah Le Travis and Miss Frances Downey Travis; five brothers, Dr. R. W. Travis of Independence, Dr. W. B. Travis of Kentwood, N. B. Travis of Magnolia, Miss., B. S. Travis of Liberty, Miss., Z. T. Travis of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters. 9 Jan 1942; Sec. 2, p. 3: Harry Gilliard, 65, a brick mason here for the past two years, died last Friday at home of Bert Bacon. The body was shipped Sunday to Danville, Ill., the old home of Mr. Gilliard. He leaves a son in Washington, D. C. and a daughter living in California. 16 Jan 1942; Sec. 1, p. 1, col. 6: Cora Varnado of Jackson, Miss., widow of the late Seaborn Lowery Varnado, died Monday, January 5th while visiting a sick friend [Mrs. Harris, her daughter's mother-in-law]. Mrs. Varnado left Hammond about ten years ago and for the past few years has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Claude Howe in Jackson, Miss. Funeral services were Wednesday January 7th in New Orleans with interment in Greenwood cemetery; her brother-in-law, Rev. Milton Varnado of Mobile, Ala. officiated. Survived by four sons, Lowery Varnado of Mobile, Ala., John Allen Varnado of Jackson, Miss., Clinton Bell Varnado of Tenn. and Marvin Varnado of Stackfield, Ill; four daughters, Mrs. Claude Howe and Mrs. Felix Pomorski of Jackson, Miss., Mrs. James Harris of New Orleans, Mrs. John Richardson of Opelousas; three sisters, Mrs. Sumpter B. Davis of Hammond, Mrs. E. L. Zansler of New Orleans and Mrs. Stevie Wellner of Lumberton, NC; one brother, R. D. Allen of Ponchatoula. 16 Jan 1942; Sec. 1, p. 2, col. 1: Amite, La., Jan. 14 - Thomas L. Lee, 84, died at Florida Parishes hospital in Independence. He was a lifelong resident of Tangipahoa Parish, born 8 June 1857 near Tickfaw. Funeral was at Amite with interment in Amite cemetery. Survived by a son and three daughters, Willie Lee, Mrs. Mattie Rainey and Mrs. Ida Blount of Tickfaw, and Mrs. Stella Tommie of Hammond; also four sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were Tuesday in Chicago. Survivors include two brothers, Gus Polites of Hammond and John Polites of New Orleans; two sisters, one in Chicago and one in New York City. 23 Jan 1942; p. 1, col. 4: Mrs. O. H. Cole motored to Osyka, Miss. Tuesday to attend the funeral of her niece, Mrs. L. B. Shoemake, who was killed Sunday in an auto accident enroute to Kentwood. She was the daughter of John Hutchinson and Melvina Gordon; a native of Tangipahoa Parish. Funeral was at the Zion Baptist church with interment in Zion Hill cemetery. Surviving relatives include six daughters, Mrs. George Morson of Mobile, Ala., Mrs. Matthew Miley of Denham Springs, Mrs. E. J. Morgan of Independence, Mrs. E. J. Robertson of Independence; two sons, B. G. Stewart of Albany and Fred Stewart of Independence; one brother, Spencer Hutchinson of Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. M. Barnes of Springfield and Mrs. Florence Stewart of Albany. 23 Jan 1942; p. 5: Mrs. John E. Guess spent Monday with her sister, Mrs. John Shoemake in Kentwood and attended the funeral Tuesday of Mrs. L. B. Shoemake who was killed in an auto accident near Jackson, Miss. last Sunday. 23 Jan 1942; p. 5, col. 5: Mrs. Laura Cook Wright, 69, widow of Sol L. Wright, died Friday at Crowley. Services were Saturday. She was a native of Newman, Ill. and resided in Crowley 40 years. Her husband developed prominent rice varieties including Blue Rose. Survived by three daughters, Mrs. T. A. Warner of Hammond, Mrs. C. E. Kemmerly, Jr. of Baton Rouge and Mrs. Paul C. Hoffpauir of Crowley; one son, S. L. Wright of Crowley; one brother, John Cook of Protection, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. G. W. Denning of New York and Mrs. John Ballard of Christman, Ill; several grandchildren. 23 Jan 1942; p. 6: Loranger - Mr. W. N. Ritchie received news Tuesday of last week of the death of his mother, age 80. 23 Jan 1942; p. 6: In Memoriam - Mrs. J. A. Gaude died 16 Jan 1941 - by daughters, son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. 6 Feb 1942; Sec. 1, p. 2, col. 2: Mrs. Mahlon Bauerle, 38, the former Miss Thelma Alexander of Hammond, died Wednesday in New Orleans. Services were yesterday with interment in Baptist cemetery. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Eugene and Buster; twin daughters Margie and Margaret Bauerle; five sisters, Miss Connie Alexander, Mrs. Guy Landry, Mrs. Warren Landry, Mrs. Charles Bloomquist all of Hammond and Mrs. Ruchie Johnson of Iowa; three brothers, Terry Alexander of Bogalusa, Brittan Alexander of Baton Rouge and Archie Alexander of Hammond. 6 Feb 1942; Sec. 1, p. 2, col. 7: Dr. John Ehlert, 70, retired army physician died Monday at his home in Springfield. He came to this section from Birmingham, Ala. several years ago after retiring. A brother, Dr. William Ehlert is a dentist in Ponchatoula; also survived by his widow; one son and one daughter, a resident of Honolulu. 6 Feb 1942; Sec. 1, p. 2, col. 7: Miss Essee Mary Robertson, 59, a native of Plaquemine, died Thursday in Hammond at the home of her sister, Mrs. Gwendolyn Kopfler. Services and burial were in Plaquemine Thursday. Survived by four brothers, Edward, Ernest, Allen of Plaquemine and Arthur of Oakland, Calif. 6 Feb 1942; p. 5, col. 4: Mother of Mr. Billy Stevens died yesterday at family home in Neosho, Mo. Funeral services are to be today there. 6 Feb 1942; Sec. 1, p. 5, col. 4: Dr. Edward James Kevlin died February 4th. He was born in Algiers, La. 4 Oct 1879 and resided in Ponchatoula since 1910. Surviving relatives include his widow, the former Miss Aida Scherer; two sons, Moffet and John Ross Kevlin; one daughter, Mrs. Louis Parker; two grandchildren, Beverley Louise Parker and Patrick Ross Kevlin; two sisters, Mrs. H. M. Morse and Mrs. W. T. Donner of Algiers. Funeral services were Thursday February 5th at St. Joseph Catholic church in Ponchatoula with burial in Catholic Cemetery. 13 Feb 1942; Sec. 1, p. 1, col. 3: In Memoriam - Walter A. Tulane of Hammond; Arthur L. Chandler of Denham Springs; Walter E. Tootle of Baton Rouge - These men went down with Standard Oil Tanker, W. L. Steed which was torpedoed off the New Jersey coast on February 2nd. [See related article in 27 Feb 1942, p. 1] 13 Feb 1942; p. 1, col. 4: P. L. Gaston, Sr. died at his home in Hattiesburg, Miss. Wednesday. He was the president of Hammond- Baton Rouge Brick company. Son Paul Gaston, Jr. in his only survivor; his wife died some years ago. She was the sister of Mrs. Whitfield, wife of the former Governor of Miss. 13 Feb 1942; p. 1, col. 6: C. M. (Neil) Mixon died Tuesday in Amite. He was the assessor of Tangipahoa Parish. Services were Wednesday at Laurel Street Baptist church, the body was conveyed to Amite for burial. He was in his 62nd year. His brother, Judge Hypolite Mixon died less than six months ago. He was a native of Tangipahoa parish, born on a farm east of Amite, the son of Jesse Mixon. Surviving relatives include his widow, the former Miss Emmie Holton; one daughter, Mrs. John Barton Ratliff of McComb, Miss.; two sons, Neil H. Mixon of Amite and Sidney Mixon of Gloster, Miss.; three grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters, Miss Aurelia Mixon, Mrs. Luke Elliott and Joseph W. Mixon of Amite; T. M. Mixon of Baton Rouge and Mrs. E. V. Russell of Arcola [In the 27 Feb 1942 issue there is a picture of his widow, Emmie Holton Mixon, on p. 1 as she was named to succeed him as assessor.] 13 Feb 1942; p. 2, col. 2: Doris Ridgdell, 15, was killed yesterday at the railroad crossing in Amite when a train and school bus collided. The owner/driver of the bus was Henry Ridgdell, 46. [See related article in 20 Feb 1942 issue, p. 4] 13 Feb 1942; p. 2, col. 4: Funeral services for Dr. Eugene Lee Bueler will be here today at Grace Memorial with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. He died Wednesday, in his 48th year. For the past 15 years he has practiced osteopathy in New Orleans. Survived by his widow, the former Gladys Lou Ray; two children, Barbara Jean and William Mervin Buele; his mother, Mrs. Frank Gibbs Bueler of Hammond. 13 Feb 1942; p. 2, col. 4: Harris Knox Butler, 59, died last Monday in New Orleans at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Poupart. Services were in Hammond Tuesday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. Survived by his widow; several children and other close relatives here including Hollis Butler and Mrs. Carl Anstead, a cousin. 13 Feb 1942; p. 4, col. 6: Independence Notes - Mrs. Florence Stewart passed away Saturday at her old home. Funeral was Sunday at Zion Hill. Leaves children, grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. 13 Feb 1942; Sec. 2, p. 2, col. 2: Joseph (Mike) Mathis, 54, passed away February 2nd at Marine hospital in New Orleans. He served in World War 1. Survived by two aunts, Mrs. G. B. Caldwell of Tickfaw and Mrs. M. Guerin of Lavonia; and one uncle, Charles Mathis of Tickfaw. 20 Feb 1942; Sec. 1, p. 2, col. 7: Mrs. Robert W. Pickett, the former Mona Chandler, died Tuesday. Services were Wednesday with interment in a cemetery near Zemurray. Survived by her husband; one daughter, Kathleen; one sister, Miss Eunice Chandler 20 Feb 1942; p. 3, col. 4: Fred Harden of Elkhart, Ind. died Thursday in Elkhart. He was the eldest son of the late Charles Harden and Mary McCormick Harden of Covington, Ind. Services will be Saturday in Elkhart with interment in Covington. Surviving relatives include four daughters; two sons; 3 brothers, Paul and Lee of Elkhart and Frank of Hammond; one sister, Mrs. Sibbe-- Flynn of Elkhart 20 Feb 1942; Sec. 2, p. 3, col. 1: In Memoriam - of husband and father - Robert E. (Buzzy) Bahm - died 22 Feb 1941 - by sons, daughters and wife. 20 Feb 1942; p. 3, col. 6: Mrs. Alice S. Addison died last Thursday; seven days short of her 81st anniversary. Services were held last Friday at New Beulah Baptist church. She was the widow of Warren W. Addison, a pioneer of Tangipahoa parish. Pallbearers included her grandchildren as follows: J. D. Addison, Elmore Cunningham, Marion Addison, Clifford Addison, Willie Thompson and Bardy Cunningham. Surviving relatives include three daughters, Mrs. George Cunningham of Albany, Mrs. Willie Bankston of Baptist, Mrs. Walt Thompson of New Orleans; five sons, Alden, William, Cleon, Elzy and Hinkle Addison all of Natalbany; 49 grandchildren and 36 great, grandchildren. 20 Feb 1942; p. 4, col. 4: (Amite, La., Feb. 14) - Double funeral as brother and sister died as a result of a school bus accident. Doris Ridgdell, 17, died enroute to Florida Parishes hospital in Independence Thursday. Her brother, Lloyd, 14, died at a New Orleans hospital Friday. Their father, Henry, the driver of the bus, is in critical condition. Services were held at Union church in Amite with burial in the church cemetery. They are survived by the father, Henry Ridgdell; mother, Mrs. Mattie Zachary Ridgdell; one sister, Louise Ridgdell, 18. All live in the Union church community. [See related article in 13 Feb 1942 issue, p. 2.] 27 Feb 1942; Sec. 1, p. 1, col. 6: Walter A. Tulane, 26, died at sea on a tanker that was torpedoed February 2nd. He was a native of Mobile, Ala.; married Miss Helen Duczer of Hammond about one year ago; they lived in Baton Rouge. Survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Tulane; a sister, Mrs. Peter Ilves; grand- mother, Mrs. John Alexander Barton all of Mobile. 27 Feb 1942; Sec. 2, p. 4: G. N. Gay, 58, was killed Thursday in a car accident. He was dead on arrival at Florida Parishes hospital. Services will be Saturday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. Survived by his widow; two sons, Pfc. Herbert Gay, Pvt. Proteus Gay of Camp Hullen, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Sinclair Goodman of Baton Rouge and Jeanette Gay of Hammond; one grandchild. 27 Feb 1942; Sec. 2, p. 1, col. 4: Mrs. Emma P. Benway, a resident of New Orleans and former resident of Hammond, passed away last week while visiting a niece in Moline, Ill. She was the former Miss Emma Purse, born in Orion, Ill. Mr. Benway died in 1931. 27 Feb 1942; Sec. 2, p. 3, col. 6: Charles Murray died at his home in Livingston parish Friday. He was in his 68th year. Funeral services were Saturday at Catholic church in Springfield with interment in Carter cemetery there. He leaves his widow, the former Corinne Johnson; six sons, Oscar, Charles, Henry, Russell, J. V. and C. C. Murray, Jr.; five daughters, Mrs. G. L. Russell, Mrs. L. B. Bencaz, Mrs. Wallard Lord and Misses Corinne and Iris Murray; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Florence Kemp of New Orleans. 6 Mar 1942; Sec. 1, p. 1, col. 3: Raymond Sinagra, one month old, passed away Saturday in Hotel Dieu in New Orleans. Parents are Mayor and Mrs. Charles Sinagra of Independence. Services and burial were Sunday with interment in Colonial cemetery near Independence. 6 Mar 1942; p. 1, col. 3: Mrs. Fincher, mother of Mrs. Frances Drury, Jr. died at her home in Hunter, Ark. Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Drury and two daughters, Celia Fay and Lorah Mae, will attend services in Hunter. 6 Mar 1942, p. 1, col. 5: Ebner A. Forbes, 69, died at his Hammond home last Sunday. He was a resident of Hammond for 57 years; born 22 Jan 1873 at Loda, Ill. He married Miss Maude Gould on 13 April 1898. He served in the Spanish-American War. Survived by four sons, Harold A., Max J., Frank G. and Lee M.; three daughters, Mrs. Lois Knieper, Mrs. Doris Hood and Mrs. Iris Coleman all living in Hammond. 13 Mar 1942; Sec. 1, p. 1, col. 3: W. L. Mitchell, a former resident of Hammond, died following a car accident in Shreveport Tuesday. Survived by his wife and daughter, Geraldine. 13 Mar 1942; p. 2, col. 3: Gilbert Bottolf, 77, died Tuesday. He was a native of Oslo, Norway; born in 1866, and came to the U. S. at age 18. Funeral was Thursday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. Survived by his widow; three sons, Sam, Martin and Arthur; three daughters, Mrs. E. A. Campbell, Mrs. Lawrence Bolin and Miss Esther Bottolf; four grandchildren. 13 Mar 1942; p. 4, col. 1: John Moore, 64, died Wednesday night at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Moore with whom he had resided the past two years. Funeral services were Friday with interment in Zeigler cemetery. 13 Mar 1942; p. 4, col. 2: Herman E. Bond, 31, died at the Florida Parishes hospital at Independence Tuesday of last week. He was a native of Wilmer; present home is in Hammond. He was the son of G. G. Bond and Ida M. Baham, formerly of Wilmer, now of Hammond. Funeral services were Independence Wednesday with interment in Stevens cemetery. Surviving are his parents; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Harrell of Hammond; four brothers, M. L. Bond of Baton Rouge, J. B. Bond of Jackson, Miss., H. T. Bond of Corpus Christi, Tex. and G. D. Bond of Hammond. 13 Mar 1942; Sec. 2, p. 1: Mrs. Robert W. Pickett, Sr., near 82, died last Friday at home of her son Robert, making the second death in the family in two weeks. The son's wife died the early part of last week. The body was sent to Morrow, near Alexandria, for interment. She is survived by one son and one granddaughter, Katherine. 13 Mar 1942; p. 3: Amite, La., March 9 - Mrs. Mary Jane Statham Bankston, wife of Desire Bankston, Tangipahoa parish jail superintendent, died at her home this morning. Her funeral will be at Laural Street Baptist at 10 A.M. Tuesday with interment in Bankston cemetery east of Amite. She was the daughter of the late Augustus Bankston; born east of Amite 3 January 1876. She is survived by her husband and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Luther Stevens and Jeff Bankston of Amite, Clay Bankston and Mrs. Edwards Gurry of New Orleans, Woodrow Bankston of the U. S. Navy and Miss Georgia Bankston an army nurse at Camp Wheeler, Ga. 13 Mar 1942; p. 4: Jacob F. Martens, 83, was buried at Beulah Tuesday. He was a native of South Stable, Ileswich, Germany and came to America at the age of 18; settled at Battle Creek, Iowa later coming to Natalbany, La. where he has lived since 1890. He married Jennie A. Addison who died on 18 Sept 1890. Surviving him are four sons, George O., Walace, W., Walter G. and Hines O.; four daughters, Mrs. P. J. Robinson, Mrs. R. E. Rogers, Mrs. R. E. He was born in Wisc. on 22 Oct 1860; moved to Dodge County, Minn. where he grew to manhood. Coalwell; four brothers, Harry Sanford of Calif., Walter Severance of Ill., Frank Severance of Minn. and Bert Severance of Wisc. 10 Jul 1942; Sec. 1, P. 1, col. 5: Herbert d'Nelle Tucker, 48, died at his New Orleans home Sunday. Catholic services were here on Monday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. The family resided in Hammond for 27 years. Born in Ponchatoula, the son of the late Jim and Nellie Thompson Tucker and grandson of the late Waddy Thompson of South Carolina and New Orleans. His wife was the former Miss Norma Mangon of Hammond who survives along with three daughters, Nellie, Mary and Norma Catherine, and three sons, Herbert, Jr., Jim and Waddy. 10 Jul 1942; Sec. 1, p. 1, col. 6: Wilmer Starns, 44, the first Hammond man to lose life while engaged in naval service, died Friday in a Virgin Islands hospital from burns he received on June 30th. His mother is Mrs. Herbert Starns. The family came to Hammond over 30 years ago. His twin brother, Elmer, has been at sea for 20 years and hasn't been heard from for more than 6 months. Wilmer Starns was a veteran of the 1st world war. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mattie Starns; brother, Elmer; sister, Mrs. Dave Robertson; other near relatives. No word about services or burial but believe it will not be returned to Hammond. 10 Jul 1942; p. 2, col. 1: Mrs. Charles E. Norman, the former Lillie Crabtree, died on Sunday, July 5th. She was the daughter of William and Margaret Crabtree; born 25 Oct 1858; came to Hammond in 1894 and married the late Charles E. Norman in 1898. Funeral services were last Sunday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. She is survived by four nieces, Mrs. George Gould, Miss Hazel Carr of Hammond, Mrs. Thomas Kennedy of New Orleans and Mrs. Ruth Strader of Covington, Ky.; four nephews, Walter C. Lamb of Ennie, Tex., George W. Crook, C. C. Carr and Leon Carr of Hammond. 10 Jul 1942; p. 2, col. 5: Edward Cullom, 74, died at home in Springfield yesterday. He came from Tenn. to Springfield about 50 years ago. He is survived by his wife, the former Mrs. Florence Smith; two sons, Tom Cullom of New Orleans and Jim Cullom of Springfield; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Pitcher of Springfield; one brother, Clarence Cullom of Springfield. Another brother preceded her in death on April 7th. No details regarding services. 10 Jul 1942; p. 4: Joe Lala, 54, a well known Hammond plumber, died last Monday. Funeral services were Tuesday at Holy Ghost Catholic church with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. He leaves several family members. 10 Jul 1942; Sec. 2, p. 1: Albert Charles Daniels, 20, of Natchez, Miss. was a victim of carbon monoxide. He was in the uniform of the C.C.C. and was hitchhiking. He was a former resident of St. Tammany parish and was visiting in Hammond. His father is Z. T. Daniels of Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Daniels has many relatives in this area. Services were Tuesday with interment in Roseland-Arcola cemetery where his mother is buried. A sister also survives. 10 Jul 1942; Sec. 2, p. 3: Mrs. Lizzie Elias, 72, died Wednesday June 24th, at the home of her son, Nasief Elias, with whom she had made her home the past seven years. Survivors include her son; three grandsons, Philip Joseph who is in the U.S. Army at Camp Shelly, Miss., Tufic and George Joseph of Hattiesburg, Miss. Funeral services were at Catholic church and burial was in Greenlawn cemetery. 17 Jul 1942; p. 1, col. 6: Billy Ziegel, grandson of Mrs. Alice Ziegel, drowned near Norfolk, Va. He was in the U.S. Navy; born in Kentwood 13 Oct 1922 and since his mother passed away had made his home with his grandmother of Hammond. Survived by a twin brother and sister, Edgar and Edna Ziegel of Hammond; a half- sister, Eloise Ziegel of Ponchatoula. He was a native of Woodville, Miss.; born there June 7, 1884, son of the late Dr. Edward L. McGehee and Anna Overton Webb. He married Iris Cooper on December 18, 1912 at Hammond. He practiced in Hammond until 1923. Funeral services were Monday with burial in the family cemetery at Bowling Green plantation in Woodville. One son, Charles G. McGehee, Jr. is a member of the faculty at Highland school in East Baton Rouge Parish. Dr. McGehee's widow is a member of the faculty at the School of Deaf in Baton Rouge. Hill, Sr., 73, a resident of Hammond for past 30 years, died Monday at Marine Hospital in New Orleans. He was a native of Homer and lived in Brookhaven, Miss. the greater part of his life. Graham in Clinton, Iowa in 1899. They resided in Rock Island until moving here 36 years ago. Mr. Graham died in 1922. John Edward Hayden, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Green D. Hayden, was killed in an airplane accident at Blytheville, Ark. Tuesday. Services were held Thursday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. Also killed was 2nd Lieut. Harley D. Carroll, 27, of Columbus, Ohio; both were flight instructors. Miss Dorothy Sawyer of Valdosta was engaged to Lt. "Aunt Lizzie" Abels was buried Sunday at Ponchatoula cemetery following services. Elizabeth Drude was born in New Orleans on 17 July 1865, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Drude. The family moved to Ponchatoula. On 17 July 1882 she married the late Jacob R. Abels. Mr. Abels died on 23 March 1937. She died last Friday in Baptist hospital in New Orleans. His wife learned the news last Monday. She is the former Margaret Pickering of Boston, Mass. They have two children, a son born only a few months ago and a daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Zemurray lived at Zemurray Lodge near Hammond at intervals. His father is the president of United Fruit Co. Her father was the late Prof. Wm. H. Pickering of the Island of Jamaica, a famous astronomer and on the faculty at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard. S. M. Hospital Sunday. He was fatally injured when he fell from a train. Funeral services were Monday with burial in Greenlawn cemetery. Her passing marked the first dissolution within her immediate family during a period of 56 years. She was the former Corilla Trousdale, daughter of James M. and Almira Record Trousdale of Tenn.; married Mr. Saint 20 April 1886 at Franklin, La. and they moved to Hammond in 1904. Kinchen and Ann Smith Hudson Kinchen. She first married J. S. Gatlin and had one son, Dr. James A. Gatlin of New York who survives. A daughter, Mrs. Norma Mangin Tucker, the child of her second husband, the late J. P. Mangin, also survives together with six grandchildren: Nellie, Herbert, Mary, Jim, Norma Catherine and Waddy Tucker. L. Carpenter, wife of the late Jesse L. Carpenter, died 12 May 1943. Born in Amite County, Miss. 20 Sep 1864 and lived in Amite County and Tangipahoa until 1911. Since then she has resided in Denham Springs. Survived by three sons and two daughters: Charles C. of Hammond, Clyde W. of Denver, Colo., J. L., Jr. of Denham Springs, Mrs. M. K. Cockerham and Mrs. Betty C. Jones of Denham Springs; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
