He was an IC railroad conductor; died Monday of a heart attack at his home. He was born in Tangipahoa and for the past 34 years lived in McComb, Miss. He leaves his wife; his father, H. S. Story of Amite; five sisters, Mrs. Maude Borst, Mrs. G. P. Harvey, Mrs. John Berwick all of Amite, Mrs. Edward Mason and Mrs. Dewey A. Payer of Baton Rouge; a brother, H. D. Story, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepson, Johnny Bethea of McComb and a stepdaughter, Mrs. F. W. McKlemurray of Paducah, Ky. 2 Jul 1943; p. 5: Mrs. Thomas G. Womack, 57, wife of the former mayor of Kentwood, passed away Sunday at Wiginton's Infirmary [Hammond] where she was brought after suffering a heart attack at home. Funeral services were held Monday from the residence in Kentwood with interment in Greenlawn cemetery there. She was the former Rachel Harper of McComb, Miss. She was a member of the Presbyterian church. Survived by her husband, who holds a position with the state of La.; one son, Thomas G. Womack, Jr. of Hammond; two daughters, Mrs. Eric E. Guileau, Jr. of Lafayette and Flo Womack of Baton Rouge; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Livingston of Winnfield; a brother, Matthew Harper of McComb; 2 grandchildren. 9 Jul 1943; p. 5: Funeral services for Sam Locasio, Sr., 84, who died Thursday, were held Saturday with interment in Rose Memorial Park. He suffered a stroke Thursday at home on the Hammond- Ponchatoula highway and never regained consciousness. A native of Villa Frati, Italy, he moved to the U. S. in 1892. His family was the first Italian one to settle in Hammond, moving here in 1902. For the past 38 years he has resided on his farm south of Hammond. Two sons, Sam Locasio, Jr. and Joseph Locasio, own the largest shoe store in Hammond; another son, John Locasio, is considered one of the leading farmers in the Hammond area. Mr. Locasio was the last member of his family. In 1938 he made a trip to Clarksburg, W. Va. to visit a sister whom he had not seen in 40 years and since that time she has passed away. Surviving relatives include his widow; four sons, Sam, Jr., Joseph, John and Charles, the two latter being born in Hammond; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Giacone, also born in Hammond; 8 grandchildren and 1 great, grandchild. 9 Jul 1943; p. 7: Funeral services for U. C. Addison, 63, local real estate man, were held Sunday with interment in Forest Park cemetery. He died of a heart attack Monday in Hammond. He was a resident of Shreveport for many years. He was born 22 August 1879 in Hammond. This town was named for his uncle, Peter Hammond. His parents were Bose and Rowena Wheaton Addison. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hattie Addison; two stepdaughters, Mrs. John Brook of Shreveport and Mrs. Luke Garland of Minden; one sister, Mrs. G. C. Wood of New Orleans; a half-brother, S. A. Anstead of Hammond. 16 Jul 1943; p. 1: Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Bondurant Field, 76, who died Monday, were held Tuesday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. She was born in St. Joseph and during the past 50 years had made Hammond her home for the greater part of the time. A daughter, Mrs. T. S. Scanlan, preceded her in death several years ago. Among her surviving relatives is her grand- daughter, Miss Verna Scanlan, with whom she made her home. 23 Jul 1943; p. 1: Hammond lost one of it's pioneers when Barney Arnold, 79, died last Sunday at the Baptist hospital in New Orleans. About 40 years ago he drove a team of oxen hauling logs to the mill at Natalbany. He used his wagon to buy much of the land around Natalbany-Tickfaw sections and south to Hammond. He sold tracts to the Italians first settling here. At one time he operated the creosoting plant and for many years his mill treated much of the piling shipped from here to New Orleans. Some years ago he started his present mill northeast of Hammond. Funeral services were held Monday in Hammond with interment in the Arnold cemetery where his mother and other relatives are buried. The burial place is east of Hammond, some miles out. Twice he married; the deceased is survived by his widow and 7 children; Mrs. Mary Daussat of New Orleans, Mrs. Matilda Wahden, Barney, James, Silvester, Calvin, Johnny and Catherine all of Hammond; and a great number of grandchildren. 30 Jul 1943; p. 2: John McIntyre, about 40, sons of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. McIntyre, died Thursday in his truck enroute from northeast Hammond. His father is superintendent of the railroad running between Hammond and Covington. Funeral services will be today in Amite. [See related article in 6 August edition, p. 4] 30 Jul 1943; p. 3: Funeral services for Alcide B. Autin, 75, were held Monday with interment in Ponchatoula Catholic cemetery. Mr. Autin died last Sunday. He was the father of Jack Autin, well known in athletic circles in New Orleans and in Tangipahoa Parish where he has been athletic director at the Independence High school and at Loranger High school. 30 Jul 1943; p. 6: Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Welch Kinchen, 67, were held at Albany Wednesday, July 14th. Mrs. Kinchen lived all her life in Livingston Parish. Survivors include her husband, M. H. Kinchen; eight children: F. E. Kinchen, J. C. Kinchen, Mrs. Clifford Jordan, Mrs. J. W. Hatcher of Baton Rouge; Henry Kinchen, Mrs. R. E. Glasscock, Mrs. D. A. Johnson of Albany; Mrs. F. J. FitzSimons, Jr. of Columbus, Miss.; 14 grandchildren and 1 great, grandchild. Interment was in Bethlehem cemetery. 6 Aug 1943; p. 1: Joseph Cucchiara, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cucchiara of Hammond and Independence, passed away Monday at the Florida Parishes hospital [Independence]. He was born Saturday at the Cucchiara home in Independence. Funeral services were held Monday with interment in Colonial cemetery. Besides his parents, the baby is survived by a sister, Carmelite, and a brother, Peter (Sonny) Cucchiara. 6 Aug 1943; p. 2: Funeral services for Lester Wallace Edell, Sr., 51, brother of Mrs. Charles Black of Hammond, were held Monday in New Orleans. He died Saturday aboard his yacht, the Beatrice III, on which he had gone to Barataria bay for a fishing trip. He was president of the Bishop-Edell Machine Works, Inc. in New Orleans. Survivors include his widow, the former, Mrs. Beatrice Cavignac Bishop; a son, Lester W. Edell, Jr.; a sister, Mrs. Charles Black of Hammond; a stepson, Major Clarence A. Bishop, U.S. Army Medical Corps. 6 Aug 1943; p. 3: Mary Alice Loicano, 2 month old daughter of Louise Lesh and Martin Loicano, died Friday July 30th. Funeral services were Saturday in New Orleans with interment in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. Survivors include parents; four half- sisters, Janet, Clara, Attice Joyce and Jamie Loicano. 6 Aug 1943; p. 4: The funeral of John Homer McIntyre, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. McIntyre, was held last Friday in Hammond instead of Amite, as was reported last week. He was born 2 March 1902, his death occurred suddenly Thursday of last week. Interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. Two brothers came from Little Rock, Ark. and Memphis, Tenn. to attend the rites. Willie McIntyre is from Little Rock and Eugene came from the Bluff City. 13 Aug 1943; p. 1: Hardy Bridges, of Kentwood, died suddenly Wednesday at home. Funeral services were held Thursday in Kentwood with interment in the New Zion cemetery. Survivors include a son, Otis, and a daughter, Miss Pearl Bridges, of Houston, Texas. 13 Aug 1943; p. 8: Pvt. George Camelo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Camelo, was killed 19 July in the Pacific war area. He served overseals for 14 months. It is believed that the last month or two he was stationed in New Guinea. He would have been 25 years of age on August 14th. Besides his parents, Pvt. Camelo is survived by two brothers, Dominick Camelo, stationed with the Coast Guard in Elizabeth Town, N.C. and Johnny Camelo of Hammond. A cousin, Miss Mary Miller, works at Tony's Market. 20 Aug 1943; p. 1: Funeral services for Peter Bylsma who died Wednesday in a Detroit hospital will be held today in Hammond. He resided in Hammond for a number of years and was the father of the late Margaret Bylsma and grandfather of Dolly Bylsma Allen. 20 Aug 1943; p. 1: Funeral services were held Wednesday for Mrs. Josephine Labue, 59, who died Monday in Hammond. Interment was in Colonial cemetery at Independence. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Russell Dorsa, Mrs. Josephine LaRock and Mrs. E. M. Puma of Fort Worth, Tex.; three sons, Sam, Joe and Charles Labue; one sister, Mrs. Frances Sinatra; one brother, Nunzio Inzenia; 22 grandchildren and 2 great, grand- children. 20 Aug 1943; p. 3: Mrs. J. Temple Shepherd, the former Rose Besson, died Monday at her home in Killian. Funeral services were Tuesday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery in Hammond. 20 Aug 1943; p. 3: Madame Caroline Ferchaud, 87, died Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. S. Morel. She was born in New Orleans in 1856 and lived there until 1918 when she moved to Hammond to make her home with her daughter. Mr. Ferchaud passed away in 1914. Interment will be in the family tomb at St. Louis cemetery No. 3 in New Orleans. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. J. S. Morel of Hammond; two sons, A. J. Ferchaud of Chicago, Ill. and George F. Ferchaud of Baton Rouge; 11 grandchildren and 4 great, grandchildren. 20 Aug 1943; p. 5: Earl Byrd, 22, of Holden, was killed in the Battle of Guadalcanal. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Byrd; a native of Holden. He joined the Navy in September of 1939 and served on a destroyer. Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Richard E. Byrd of Baton Rouge, and two sisters, Viva Mae and Esther Byrd. 27 Aug 1943; p. 2: Frank Parrins, 81, a resident of Independence for many years, died Tuesday at his home. Funeral services were Wednesday with interment in Colonial cemetery. He is survived by one son, Tony Parrino; one daughter, Mrs. Camello Musso; one brother, Sam Parrino of Franklinton. 27 Aug 1943; p. 2: Pvt. Knobby Sinagara, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Sinagra of Independence; and Pvt. Russell Costanza, 22, son of Mrs. Louis Costanza and the late Mr. Costanza of Independence, have been reported killed in action on July 27th in the southwest Pacific area. It is believed that they took part in the Battle of Munda. Pvt. Sinagara entered the service in January 1942. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Pfc. Angelo R. Sinagra of Camp Crowder, Mo. and Pfc. Frank Sinagra of Tinker Field, Okla.; one sister, Mrs. Annie Marretta. Pvt. Costanza is survived by his mother; five brothers, Sam and John Costanza who are in the service, Tony Costanza of Amite, Felix L. Costanza of Independence and Angelo Costanza of Benton Harbor, Mich. 27 Aug 1943; p. 5: (Tangipahoa, La., August 22) Miss Emma L. Wall, first World War Red Cross nurse, died at her home here Friday in her 74th year. She was the daughter of Paris Wall and Sarah Elizabeth Kemp, pioneers of Tangipahoa. She was a member of Tangipahoa Presbyterian church and was listed in Who's Who in Red Cross. In early life she entered the Touro Infirmary school of nursing in New Orleans and was the first nurse to be graduated from that institution. She saw service as a Red Cross nurse overseas in World War 1 and was commended by President Woodrow Wilson for her service. In the postwar period she taught first aid in the colleges of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, and then served the Red Cross in Laurel, Ms. as executive secretary. She was also employed at one time by the United Fruit Co. in Honduras to do general hospital work. In later years, she became health nurse in Tangipahoa Parish and was chairman of the Tangipahoa unit of the Red Cross. Funeral services were held at her home in Tangipahoa Sunday with interment in the family plot in Tangipahoa parish. Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. John O. Corbin and Misses Lena and Julia Wall of Tangipahoa and Miss Ella M. Wall of New Orleans; two brothers, Preston and Jay P. Wall of Tangipahoa. 10 Sep 1943; p. 2: Eugene A. Brackenridge, 51, son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Charles A. Brackenridge, died Wednesday in New Orleans as a result of injuries received 19 November 1941 when the car in which he was riding collided with another about 1 1/2 miles west of Holden. His death bring to a total of five killed in this wreck. Those to succumb from injuries received in the car which he was riding were his wife, the former Emily Stewart; Louis F. Harris of Denham Springs, and Alfred Bendily. In the other car, Leslie Whitaker, of Ponchatoula was killed. Funeral services were Thursday with interment in Zion Hill cemetery beside his wife. Survivors include his mother; one son, Charles Eugene; two brothers, Clifford B. Brackenridge of Corinth, Miss. and Charles E. Brackenridge of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Evon G. Till of Hammond. [Note the following article on p. 8 re Capt. Munro.] 10 Sep 1943; p. 8: Death struck Capt. Keith Brackenridge Munro, 30, of Berkeley, Calif., U. S. Army Chaplain, while he was conducting morning prayers at the altar of his chapel in the southwest Pacific. An enemy bomber crashed near the chapel and its full bomb load exploded, killing him instantly. The circumstances of his death were written to his wife of Oakland, Calif. and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Neil E. Munro of Berkeley. Capt. Munro was a graduate from the University of California in 1937 and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1940. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister at Gilroy, Calif. He became a 1st Lieut. in the infantry in Feb 1942 and transferred to the Chaplain's Corps in Aug 1942. In addition to his wife and his parents, he is survived by a ten weeks old daughter whom he had never seen and two brothers, Donald and Neil, Jr. of Berkeley. About 18 months ago Capt. Munro and his wife visited his aunt, Mrs. Charles E. Brackenridge and cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Evon Till. He was a great, nephew of Mr. Charles E. Brackenridge, pioneer lumberman of Livingston Parish, and a descendant of Capt. William Brackenridge, Revolutionary Soldier of Ware, Mass. 10 Sep 1943; p. 9: (Ponchatoula, La., September 3) Funeral services will be in Ponchatoula Saturday for Mrs. E. P. Kinchen, Jr. who died Friday at her home in DeRidder, La. She was the former Annie Sutton, born in Ponchatoula, the daughter of the late Charles Sutton and Mrs. Dora Statham Sutton. She was a graduate of Ponchatoula High school and was recently employed at the DeRidder Air Base. Besides her husband and son, she is survived by her mother; two brothers, Wade Hampton Sutton of New Orleans and Charles L. Sutton with the armed forces in the southwest Pacific; two sisters, Mrs. Margery Sutton Moreman of Sanston, Va. and Mrs. Gussie Sutton Schillings of Hammond, La. Interment will be in the Ponchatoula cemetery. 17 Sep 1943; p. 1: John F. Tobin, 73, died Tuesday in New Orleans. Funeral services were held Tuesday with interment in Metairie cemetery. The Tobin family resided in Hammond for a number of years. Surviving relatives include his widow, the former Eliska Provosty; two sons, Major Paul Tobin and John W. Tobin; five daughters, Mrs. Claiborne Hale of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Frances Tobin, Mrs. Edward J. Gay, Jr., Mrs. Barnwell Phelps and Patricia Tobin. 17 Sep 1943; p. 7: (Albany, La.) Funeral services were conducted 26 Aug 1943 at the Kinchen cemetery two miles west of Albany for Edward Kinchen, 57. He died in New Orleans following surgery. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Kinchen; five sons, Coy, Oscar, Norman, Elzey and Edward Matthew Kinchen; two daughters, Mrs. Idel Stewart and Miss Loney Kinchen; two brothers, Ben and Garfield Kinchen; one sister, Mrs. Gussie Stewart; one half-sister, Mrs. Henry Crayton; 12 grandchildren. 24 Sep 1943; p. 1: Mrs. Tillie Jackson Davis died last Sunday in Hotel Dieu [New Orleans hospital]. Mrs. Davis was first married to the late Jimmie Jackson, son of Alfred Jackson, Hammond's first jeweler and watchmaker. Father and son passed away some years ago and Mrs. Jackson married Mr. Davis who operates a mattress factory here. The couple lived in Oklahoma for a number of years before returning and settling here. Funeral services were Monday in Hammond with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband, an adopted son and daughter. 24 Sep 1943; p. 3: Mrs. Anthony F. Polito, 26, of Hammond, died Monday. Funeral services were in Baton Rouge Tuesday with interment in the Spring Creek cemetery near Kentwood. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Joe Marie and Jacqueline; six brothers and two sisters. 1 Oct 1943; p. 1: Mrs. Fritz Darouse died Wednesday at her home in Hammond. She was the former, Mary Magdalene Smallwood; born 7 October 1897 at Friar's Point, Miss., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smallwood. The Smallwoods moved to Hammond in 1905; she married Frank Francis "Fritz" Darouse 26 Nov 1915 and to this union were born two daughters and four sons. Funeral services were held Thursday in Hammond with interment in the Smallwood plot in Greenlawn cemetery, where her twin sister was buried. Survivors include her husband; parents; two daughters, Myra Smallwood Darouse and Mary Elizabeth Darouse of Hammond; four sons, James William Darouse at sea in the Merchant Marine, Aviation Cadet Emmett Joseph Darouse of Pensacola, Fla., Fritz Darouse, Jr. and Charles Edward Darouse of Hammond; one grandson, James William Darouse, Jr. of Ponchatoula; two sisters, Mrs. Raymond Somers of Brookland, Ark. and Mrs. B. J. Hoover of New Orleans. 1 Oct 1943; p. 4: Funeral services for A. B. Stanga were held at his home in Bedico Thursday with interment in Stanga cemetery. He died at his home Tuesday. He was the father of Mrs. Lela Stanga and Mrs. Leo Hebert of Baton Rouge and is also survived by another daughter, Mrs. J. K. Jackson of Norco; five sons, Joe, Sidney and John of Bedico, Vernon of Goodbee and Alonzo of New Orleans; 21 grandchildren and 1 great, granddaughter, Mrs. Fred Davis of Baton Rouge. 1 Oct 1943; p. 5: (Kentwood, La., September 27) Mrs. Lem Yarborough died at her home in Kentwood Sunday. Funeral services were Tuesday with interment in Woodland cemetery in Kentwood. She was the daughter of Asy Adams and Jane Newsom of the Liverpool, La. community, west of Kentwood. Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Mrs. W. C. Bailey, Mrs. Freiler Lee, Mrs. Oree Wilkinson all of Kentwood, Mrs. Frank Kent and Mrs. Fred Carney both of Baton Rouge; four sons, Hollis, John Owen and James Nolan Yarborough all of Baton Rouge and C. J. Yarborough of the U.S. Army in North Africa. 1 Oct 1943; p. 5: (Holden, La., Sept. 27) Mr. and Mrs. Fred Starns of Holden received word from the War Department stating that their son, First Lieut. Willard Starns had been killed in an airplane crash in the Latin-America area. Lt. Starns was born 10 Oct 1918; graduated Holden High school in 1936 and entered the service in 1940. Survivors include his parents; a brother, Robert of Holden; three sisters, Mrs. C. W. Beard, Miss Mildred Starns and Miss Fanny Starns of Baton Rouge. 1 Oct 1943; p. 6: (Albany, La., Sept. 29) Funeral services for Ike Jacob Hughes, 72, of Hammond, were held here. Mr. Hughes died in Baton Rouge September 19th as the home of his daughter. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Allie Hughes of Baton Rouge; two daughters, Mrs. J. W. McLain of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Willie V. Denham of Hammond; three sons, Lee and Oscar Hughes of Baton Rouge and Albee Hughes who is serving overseas; one brother, Byron Hughes of Holden; 15 grandchildren and three great, grandchildren. Interment was in the Bethleham cemetery here. 1 Oct 1943; p. 7: (Holden, La., Sept. 26) Berlin Efferson, 47, died Saturday in Independence. He was a veteran of World War 1, losing an arm in the Meuse-Argonne combat. He was a native of Livingston Parish; son of the late J. B. and Martha Tate Efferson. Funeral services were in Holden Monday with interment in Holden cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Anna Ledet Efferson; five daughters, Mrs. Margaret Watkinson of Shreveport, Evelyn Fayard of Holden, Elda Lee, Anna Mae and Daisy Lee Efferson; one son, Charles Efferson of Holden; three brothers, Ernest and Whitt Efferson of Baton Rouge and Duncan Efferson of Holden; two sisters, Mrs. Ada Mizell and Mrs. Maggie Lott of Holden. 15 Oct 1943; p. 4: Funeral services for Mrs. Columbus Mack, 88, were Monday in Livingston Parish with interment in Mack cemetery near the old homestead. She died Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wilson Sullivan, six miles north of Livingston. She was the former Miss Martha Randall, daughter of Hiram and Elizabeth Randall of Copiah County, Miss. where she born 25 Apr 1855. She moved to Louisiana with her parents when a young girl. After her marriage to Columbus Mack, they lived one mile north of Hammond. Fifty two years ago the couple moved to Livingston Parish. She is survived by eight of her fourteen children, 51 grandchildren and 99 great, grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Joe Gartman of Robert Lee, Texas. 22 Oct 1943; p. 2: Benjamin J. Dunnington died last Saturday. He was born 7 November 1873. Funeral was last Monday at Lanier's cemetery. 22 Oct 1943; p. 3: Funeral services for Richard Benton Neal, 69, were held Wednesday. Interment was in Cooper's cemetery northeast of Hammond. He died in Hammond last Monday. Survivors include his widow; one son, Roy Neal; three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Day of Hammond, Mrs. Melvin King of Baton Rouge, Miss Ollie Neal of Hammond; four grandchildren; one brother; five sisters. 22 Oct 1943; p. 5: Mrs. Sallie Sanders Ogden died last Monday at the home of her sister, Miss Bessie Sanders in New Orleans. She was the widow of the late Henry Schwing Ogden, and daughter of the late Bessie Wofford and Jared Young Sanders. She was a sister of former Governor Jared Y. Sanders of Hammond, and aunt of J. Y. Sanders, Jr. of Baton Rouge, J. Wofford Sanders of New Iberia and Lt. Emerson Thompson Sanders of the U.S. Navy. She was a sister-in-law of J. Newt Ogden and Misses Grace and Ida Blanche Ogden of the state capitol. For several years she lived in Baton Rouge and since her husband's death 9 years ago has lived in New Orleans. Interment was in Franklin Tuesday. 22 Oct 1943; p. 5: Funeral services for Joyce Edith Eastman, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Eastman, were held Sunday with interment in Joiner cemetery. She was born Tuesday October 12th and died the following Sunday in Hammond. She was the first child of Mr. and Mrs. Eastman. She was born 24 Nov 1861 in Vincennes, Ind., the daughter of Marshall Daniel Bowman and Lucretia Johnson. Her mother died when Mrs. Brackenridge was a child, so her youthful years were spent with relatives in Ind., Wisc. and Tenn. In the late 70's she moved with her father to New Orleans and on 26 June 1888 she married Charles E. Brackenridge of Michigan. She died 18 Dec 1943. She was a member of the Tangipahoa Chapter of the D. A. R., her eligibillity to the D. A. R. being through her descent from Nicholas Smith, a Revolutionary Soldier of Muncy, Penna. His funeral was Saturday in Hammond with interment in Franklin. He was born 29 January 1869 on the family plantation near Morgan City; the son of Jared Young Sanders and Bessie Wofford Sanders. His father's people had come to Louisiana from North Carolina and his mother's from Virginia. His father was a Confederate veteran; he died in 1881 leaving a wife and nine children. The family moved to Franklin when he was 15 years old. At his bedside at the time of his death were his second wife, the former Emma Dickinson, of New Orleans; his only child, former Congressman J. Y. The dead are Joseph L. Bickham, 21, of Amite, son of L. W. Bickham and Mrs. Rose Distefano Bickham of Amite; and Arthur Lee Houeye, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lee Houeye of Roseland. He homesteaded 80 acres four miles west of Tickfaw. Jacobsen of Phillipsburg, Kan.; six grandsons and six granddaughters. 5 May 1944; p. 5: Mrs. Susan Cooper Ensign, 92, widow of H. L. Ensign, died at her home west of Roseland Tuesday, April 25th. She was born in Canaan, Vt. 23 June 1852. She and her husband were among the first settlers in the Roseland Colony 52 years ago. They moved to Hammond a few years ago to live near their daughter, Mrs. J. W. Howes. Mr. Ensign died in Hammond six years ago after they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. He was very proud of his family tree which connected him with many famous people, such as: Robert E. Lee, George Washington and the present Queen of England; also Capt. James Lawrence, who said, "Don't give up the ship." He was a first cousin of Mate Lawrence whose face was the model for the Statue of Liberty. He was born 7 August 1860 in Niagra Falls, N. Y. His father became a staunch supporter of General Winfield Scott who was Mr. Lawrence's god-father. He was preceded in death by Mrs. Lawrence who died 10 December 1943 and was buried in Hammond. Funeral services were Monday at Baton Rouge with interment in National cemetery. He was a veteran of World War 1. Survived by his widow, Ida Mae Charlton of Slaughter; one brother, F. Varnado, 37, drowned last Saturday. She is the mother of two little boys. Her mother lives in Foules, La. and a brother lives in Kaplan. Services were Monday with interment in the cemetery near where she drowned. Born in Washington parish and reared in Hammond; moved to New Orleans 25 years ago. Survived by two sons, Byron and Sylvester Hoover; two half-brothers, Fred C. Frey of L.S.U. and Sam Frey of Amite; one sister, Mrs. Norman Leslie of New Orleans and a half-sister, Mrs. W. Lawrence of Los Angeles, Calif. 29 Dec 1944; p. 1: Pfc. Edward Null, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Null was killed in action in Germany, November 30th. 29 Dec 1944; p. 1: Ed Bankston, 60, was found dead in the swamp behind his home Thursday, December 21st. He was the only living child of Young Bankston and Exar Thompson Bankston, born 16 June 1884; a native of Tangipahoa. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Kate White Bankston; four daughters, Mrs. Randy Bankston, Mrs. Willie Tate, Mrs. Jesse Rogers and Mrs. Sammy Gatlin; eleven grandchildren. 29 Dec 1944; p. 5: Mrs. Ethel Hungate Purser, widow of the late Britain B. Purser of Amite, passed away Saturday night. Funeral services were in Amite Sunday with interment in Amite cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Professor John T. Purser of South- east Louisiana college in Hammond, Paul Purser of Newport, Va.; two daughters, Miss Mary Purser of Amite and Mrs. W. L. Watson of Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Harry P.
