He was a pioneer of Hammond. He was associated with the Diamond Iron Works; later with the Hammond Hardware Company. He was a native of Wadsworth, Ohio. His funeral services were held last Sunday from the Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery at Hammond. Surviving relatives include four daughters, Mrs. George F. Smith, Mrs. Effie Boos, Mrs. Ruth Alford, Miss Edna Coyne; three grandchildren and two great, grandchildren. 5 Jan 1945; p. 2: Mrs. Clara Peters Null of Hammond received a telegram from the War Department advising of the death of her husband, Pvt. Edward M. Null [pictured], 23 years of age, who was killed in Germany on November 30th. Besides his wife, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Null of Hammond; one brother, Roy Null; one sister, Mrs. Joe Imbraguglio; and a half-brother, Clifford Armstrong. 5 Jan 1945; p. 8: Mrs. Patrinka Gainsby, 81, died in Hammond on Friday of last week. She had no relatives, so far as is known, and her husband died some years ago. He was employed by the city and was in charge of garbage collection. He was familiarly known as "Yansby." She had been a resident of Hammond about fourty years. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery. 12 Jan 1945; p. 1: Mrs. Lydia Tycer Joiner, wife of Levi Benjamin Joiner, passed away last Thursday, January 4th, ath her home in Hammond. Funeral services were Saturday, with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery near Zemurray Lodge. On 20 August 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Joiner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; Mrs. Joiner being the fifth one of her brothers and sisters who lived to celebrate a golden wedding anniversary. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Velva Joiner of Hammond; two sons, Charles B. Joiner of Hammond and Herbert Joiner of Birmingham, Ala.; five granddaughters, Joyce, Marie, Harriett, Lydia and Edna Earle Joiner; six grandsons, Charles W., Walton and Maurice, all in the armed services, Herbert J. and Ronald, both in the ministry, and Howell; one sister, Mrs. Emma Bailey of Loranger; three brothers, Tom Tycer of Amite, Robert Tycer of Husser and Warren Tycer of Hammond; two great, grandchildren. 19 Jan 1945; p. 1: Mrs. O. C. Pantall, Jr., the former Marion Wendelken, is in receipt of a letter from the Navy Department advising of the death of her husband, O. C. Pantall, Jr. [pictured] who was killed 25 September 1944 when his ship struck a mine off the coast of France. He volunteered 27 March 1942 while employed at the Louisiana Power and Light Company with whom he had been associated since 17 January 1933. Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Grace K. Pantall; three sisters, Mrs. Nat Tycer and Mrs. Claire P. Blomeyer of Hammond, and Mrs. W. E. Settoon of Lake Charles; one brother, Jack Pantall of Lake Charles. His father, O. C. Pantall, Sr. preceded him in death a number of years ago. 19 Jan 1945; p. 1: Wilma Rita Brewer, 15 months, daughter of Wilbert and Myrtle Johnson Brewer, died 16 January in New Orleans. Funeral services were held Wednesday with interment in Jerusalem cemetery; the Poole Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Besides her parents, she leaves two sisters, Lavern and Lavelle; and two brothers, Billie and Bobbie. 19 Jan 1945; p. 2: Seymour Hoover, 86, at his home at Goodbee on Thursday. Funeral will be Friday at Collins cemetery near Lee's Landing. He was one of the best known citizens of Tangipahoa parish. He was a member of the police jury for a number of years from the 8th Ward, and he was a farmer and stock-raiser. He is survived by his wife, the former Lucy Hano; two brothers, H. C. Hoover of Ponchatoula and A. R. Hoover of Porter, Ind.; seven children, M. M. Hoover of New Orleans, T. O. Hoover of Goodbee, C. J. Hoover, J. L. Hoover of Baton Rouge, Miss Odelia Hoover and Miss Adeline Hoover of Goodbee, and Mrs. Joe Hessing of Ponchatoula; twelve grandchildren and three great, grandchildren. Poole Funeral Home of Hammond was in charge of funeral and interment. 19 Jan 1945; p. 2: Mrs. James T. French passed away Saturday in Hammond. Her funeral services were held Sunday from the Poole Funeral Home, with interment in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. She was a native of Hazelhurst, Miss.; she and her husband moved to Hammond in 1912, shortly after their marriage. She was a member of the Hazelhurst Baptist church. Besides her husband, she is survived by four sisters. 19 Jan 1945; p. 2: Anthony Battaglio Castiglio, 66, passed away Monday at his home in Hammond where he lived more than thirty years. Funeral services were held Wednesday; interment was in Rose Memorial Park. A brother, Cruciano Battaglio of Buffalo, NY was in Hammond for the funeral; also a brother Jack Battaglio. He is survived by four sons, four daughters, and the two brothers. 19 Jan 1945; p. 8: Mrs. Josephine Faldetta, 87, passed away in Hammond early last week at the home of her son, Sam Faldetta. She was a native of Italy and had lived with her son the past 44 years. Funeral services were held Wednesday of last week at Holy Ghost Catholic church. Interment was in Rose Memorial cemetery at Hammond. She survived by two children, Mrs. John Crovilla and Sam Faldetta of Hammond. 26 Jan 1945; p. 4: Amite, La., Jan. 22 - Funeral services for Mrs. Mamie Sanders Warner, 65, wife of Dedric Warner, were held at the Baptist church today. She passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. S. M. Carpenter, Sunday. Interment was at the cemetery in Hammond by the side of her son, the late Thomas A. Warner, former Hammond attorney. She is survived by her husband, a son, Lt. A. D. Warner of Lake Lure, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. S. M. Carpenter of Amite; three brothers, Richard Sanders of Baton Rouge, Duncan and Hines B. Sanders of Amite. 26 Jan 1945; p. 5: Mr. and Mrs. Carmello Silessi are in receipt of the Purple Heart which had been awarded to their son, Sgt. Frank J. Silessi [pictured], who was killed in action on Leyte Island on 21 October 1944. Sgt. Silessi was 24 and had been in the army for two years. Another son, Pvt. Peter J. Silessi has also been reported as wounded in Germany. The Silessi family has lived in Hammond for the past 33 years. 26 Jan 1945; p. 5: C. J. Yarborough, Sr., 87 yr. and 11 mo., died last Friday at his home in Kentwood. Funeral services were held Sunday with interment in Kentwood cemetery. He was a well known farmer in St. Helena parish and served as president of the school board, president of the police jury, registrar of voters and sheriff of St. Helena parish. He has lived in Kentwood for the past 20 years. He was first married to Fannie Warren and they had seven children. After Fannie's death, he married Julia Breeden, and they had four children. Besides his wife, he is survived by seven sons, Edd, Lom, Lanis and W. Yarborough all of McComb, Miss., N. Adrian Yarborough of Kentwood, T. R. Yarborough of Pineville, and Oscar Yarborough of New Iberia; two daughters, Mrs. C. F. Powell of Crowley and Mrs. W. J. Day of Kentwood; one brother, H. Q. Yarborough of Liverpool, La.; four grandchildren and 15 great, grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. 2 Feb 1945; p. 2: Freddie J. Oliphant, 34, died Thursday of last week in a New Orleans hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday in Baptist with interment in the New Beulah Baptist church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, three brothers and six sisters. 2 Feb 1945; p. 2: Mrs. Mary Foster Booth, wife of Phillip D. Booth, passed away last Saturday in a New Orleans hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday in Ponchatoula, after the arrival of a son from Oregon. Mrs. Booth was born 24 July 1898 and made her home in Ponchatoula. She and her family lived in New Orleans for the past two years. She is survived by her husband; mother, Mrs. Lula Powell of Ponchatoula; three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Welsh, Mrs. Ethel Hoover and Bernice Booth; two sons, Emmett Booth, and John Booth who is in the service and stationed in Oregon; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Murphy and Mrs. Clara Bell Moran. 2 Feb 1945; p. 5: Funeral services for Thomas Ellzey Jordan, 85, were held Wednesday 24 January, in McComb, Miss. He was born in Franklin county, Miss. and for the past 45 years made his home in McComb. He was a charter member of the East McComb Baptist church and also served as deacon and Sunday school superintendent for many years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Pritchard Jordan; a son, Hollis M. Jordan of McComb, Miss.; two grand- children, Mrs. Joe Ciruti of Hammond and J. E. Jordan of McComb; two great, grandchildren, Joan and Bobbie Ciruti of Hammond; two sisters, Mrs. Marianna Westbrook of Summit, Miss. and Mrs. Julianna Barnes of Alexandria. 9 Feb 1945; p. 1: Sgt. Hollis G. Degenhardt [pictured], 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Foster Degenhardt of Independence; and husband of Mrs. Vivian Degenhardt, was killed in Germany on December 5th. He was buried in France. 9 Feb 1945; p. 1: Marshall Monroe Wainwright, 87, passed away Thursday of last week in Hammond. For 40 years he was associated with the IC Railroad in the timber department. His wife preceded him in death a few years ago. They had nine children, and he lived to see twenty six grandchildren and fourty four great, grandchildren. Funeral services were held last Saturday with interment in the Johnson's cemetery, east of Hammond. The pallbearers were Mr. Wainwright's five sons: Frank, Floyd, Les, Ernest and Omar Wainwright. Surviving relatives include Miss Bertha Wainwright and Mrs. John Shelton of Hammond; Mrs. Peery Mercier of New Orleans; Mrs. M. E. Kelly of Shreveport; Frank, Ernest and Floyd Wainwright of Hammond; Les Wainwright of Jackson, Miss.; and Omar C. Wainwright of Birmingham, Ala. 9 Feb 1945; p. 2: Miss Willie E. Hunter, familiarly known as "Miss Pop" passed away Wednesday at a Hammond hospital. Her remains were taken to Forrest City, Ark. for burial. She had lived at Hammond the past 30 years. She leaves one sister, Mrs. James H. Noble. 9 Feb 1945; p. 4: Mrs. Lucille Cutrer Perck, 25, was killed instantly last Saturday night in Ponshatoula when a train struck the car in which she was riding. Her four year old daughter was injured, as were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Cutrer, of Ponchatoula. William Johnson, a 75 year old negro, also a passenger in the car, died late Saturday night from his injuries. 16 Feb 1945; p. 1: Nat Kent, 33, passed away Wednesday at Ponchatoula. He was employed by the Louisiana Light and Power Company since April 1934. He was electrocuted while connecting a switch on a line in Ponchatoula. Funeral services were held Thursday from the Kent home in Ponchatoula; interment was at the cemetery in Tangipahoa. He is survived by his widow, the former Ray LeBlanc of Hammond; one daughter, Diane; mother, Mrs. John Kent of Tangipahoa; one sister, Mrs. Robert A. Mitchell living in Wisconsin; one brother, John Kent of Tangipahoa. 16 Feb 1945; p. 5: Theodore Jules Stevens, of Hammond, died last Sunday in a New Orleans hospital. He was a native of Tangipahoa parish. Funeral services were held Tuesday with interment in Robertson cemetery. Besides his widow, he is survived by six daughters and one son: Mrs. Henry Daniels of Ferriday; Mrs. Clyde Givens of Gretna; Mrs. Guy Bethel, Mrs. Ralph Harper, Mrs. Andrew Calmes, Mrs. Jack C. Forest, and Floyd Stevens, all of Hammond. 16 Feb 1945; p. 5: Mrs. Maria Graziano, 93, passed away Monday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Tuesday, with interment in St. Louis cemetery in New Orleans. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Locascio of Hammond; three sons, Frank and Sam Graziano of New Orleans, and John Graziano of Baton Rouge; 13 grandchildren, 12 great, grandchildren and 1 great, great, grandchild. 16 Feb 1945; p. 5: Funeral services for Simon Willis Linder, 56, were held Thursday, February 8th. His survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Sam Monteleone of Hammond, Mrs. A. I. Hanson and Mrs. C. J. Freeman of Monroe, and Mrs. C. W. Delamar of Bastrop; three brothers, three sisters and eleven grandchildren. 16 Feb 1945; p. 6: Luther Hilburn, of Kentwood, died last Friday in a New Orleans hospital. He is survived by his wife in Kentwood. 2 March 1945 - issue missing. 16 Mar 1945; p. 1: Mrs. Deborah LeSassier Bradshaw, widow of G. G. Bradshaw, passed away Sunday at Hammond. Her funeral services were held Monday in Hammond with interment in Grace Episcopal cemetery; the Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She was a native of New Orleans and had lived in Hammond since 1907. She is survived by one son, Charles L. Bradshaw of Hammond. 16 Mar 1945; p. 1: C. R. Bishop, 57, of Hammond, died last Saturday. The family moved to Hammond 23 years ago from Ark. His funeral services were held from the Thomas Funeral Home last Sunday; interment being made in Liberty, Miss. Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Mrs. James L. Capps and Miss Jane Bishop; one son, Bobby Bishop in the U.S. Navy in the south Pacific; one granddaughter, Carolyn Capps; one brother and one sister. 16 Mar 1945; p. 8: Mrs. Grace Malone Graziano, 65, wife of Vito Graziano, passed away Saturday in a New Orleans hospital. Her funeral services were held Monday, with the Poole Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Rose Memorial Park at Hammond. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Frank V. Graziano of Hammond and Vincent Graziano of Baton Rouge; six daughters, Mrs. Frank Collura of Hammond, Mrs. Sara Mae Graziano, Mrs. John Mourain and Mrs. Morris David of New Orleans, Mrs. Lee Kennord of Baton Rouge, and Mrs. Sylvester Cascio of Chicago, Illinois. 23 Mar 1945; p. 1: Eli Whitaker, 51, a brother of Mrs. Chum R. Anderson of Hammond, and Mitchell Whitaker, Jr., a nephew, were killed at Centreville, Miss. Sunday when they were hit by a train. Young Mitchell was on a visit to his uncle. Funeral services were held for Eli on Monday, and on Tuesday for Mitchell, both in Centreville, Miss. Eli was a veteran of World War 1 and is survived by three brothers, Sheriff Richard Whitaker of Woodville, Miss., John Whitaker of Centreville; five sisters, Mrs. John Shepard of Mangham, Mrs. Mary Robinson of Jackson, Miss., Mrs. John Stickett of Gulfport, Miss., Mrs. Chum Anderson of Hammond, and Mrs. Fannie Chance of Centreville, Miss. Mitchell Whitaker is survived by his father, mother and sister. 30 Mar 1945; p. 1: Turner K. Butler, of Ponchatoula, died Tuesday at his home. He was born in Ringgold, Bienville parish, 3 April 1879. He attended schools in New Orleans and in Georgia. He was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson Butler and Mrs. Georgia A. Shehee Butler; he moved to Ponchatoula in 1900. On 23 October 1901 he married Miss Mable Johnston of Franklin, Tenn. His funeral services were held from the McKneely Funeral Home Wednesday, with interment in the Ponchatoula cemetery. He is survived by his widow; one son, Will Ed Butler, principal of the Ponchatoula High school; one daughter, Mrs. Leon Ford, Jr. of Hammond. 30 Mar 1945; p. 5: Dr. Harrison Galmoree Morris, 79, died in Baton Rouge. Funeral services were held last Friday at Istrouma and interment was in Roseland Memoria Park at Baton Rouge. He was a native of Washington Parish, near Mt. Vernon; attended Georgetown College at Georgetown, Ky. and the Tulane School of Medicine. He practiced in St. Helena parish for two years, and in Kentwood for twenty years; moved to Baton Rouge in 1921 and practiced there until 1937. He was a charter member of the Tangipahoa Parish Medical Society and was it's president for one year. He is survived by his wife, the former Maggie Tate of Gillsburg, Miss.; three children, Mrs. Neva M. Iles of Clarks, Dr. Clifton T. Morris of Baton Rouge and Harrison G. Morris; three grandchildren, Clifton Morris, Jr., Mary and William Morris. 6 Apr 1945; p. 1: Dr. Valmond J. Gautreau, Sr., of Albany, died Saturday in New Orleans. Funeral services were held Sunday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. He was the son of Arthur Gautreau and Marie Goule, born 4 June 1881 at Patoutville, St. Mary parish. He married Miss Ida Bonvillian of Houma. Surviving relatives include his widow; four children, Valmond J. Gautreau in the Marine Corps, Mrs. Richard Price of Hammond, Misses Elaine and Gloria Gautreau of Hammond; two grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Eugenie Stauffer and Mrs. Dulvah Ebert of Abbeville, and Miss Antoinette Gautreau of Hammond; four brothers, Anthony of New Iberia, Andrew of Patoutville, Henry and Eugene Gautreau of Abbeville. 6 Apr 1945; p. 1: Flight Officer George Pendarvis, 23, son of Tat Pendarvis and the late Helen Babington Pendarvis, was killed on March 19th while on a flight over Germany. He had lived in Hammond a number of years. Besides his father, who now lives in New Iberia, he leaves one sister, Margaret Pendarvis, also of New Iberia. 6 Apr 1945; p. 2: Milton E. Lavigne, 55, of Ponchatoula, died in a New Orleans hospital last Monday. He was buried at Ponchatoula. Survivors include his widow; his mother, Mrs. J. E. Lavigne; a son, Milton, Jr., now in the Navy; three brothers, Henry J., C. N., and L. A. Lavigne of Ponchatoula; two sisters, Mrs. Ed Burns of New Orleans and Mrs. G. A. Gatzke of Baton Rouge. 13 Apr 1945; p. 1: Harry Adrian Rogers [pictured], fireman second class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stone Rogers of Natalbany, lost his life in the U. S. Navy as a result of his ship being sunk during the typhoon on 19 Dec 1944. 13 Apr 1945; p. 8: Mrs. Bertha E. Watkins is in receipt of a telegram from the War Department advising her of the death of her son, Pfc. Modie N. Watkins [pictured], who was killed in Germany on February 21st. He was 22 years old on January 19th. He was the son of the late Mr. W. R. Watkins. Besides his mother, he is survived by one brother, Donice Watkins, of Hammond; and one sister, Mrs. E. J. Lessard of Algiers. 20 Apr 1945; p. 6: Fred Hano, 63, died April 8th at home near Tickfaw. Surviving relatives include seven children, Matthew, Ivy and Lorraine Hano of Independence; Earl, Murphy and Mirl Hano now on overseas duty, and Mrs. A. G. Reid of Amite; nine grand- children. 20 Apr 1945; p. 7: Mrs. Gladys Davis, who resides 3 miles west of Tickfaw, has been advised that her husband, Prt. Dudley Lee Davis [pictured], was killed in action in France on 15 March 1945. He was 21. 27 Apr 1945; p. 1: S/Sgt. J. H. Fowler was killed in Germany on April 7th. He was wounded in November and went back to his unit in January. Besides his wife, the former Miss Mable Bankston, he is survived by an infant son; his mother and sister who live in Ala.; one brother who is stationed at Kim, Colo.; a half brother and a half sister. 27 Apr 1945; p. 1: James Ray Seabolt, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Seabolt, died Monday soon after his birth at the Wiginton Infirmary [in Hammond]. Funeral services were held Tuesday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. Mrs. Seabolt is the former Miss Virgie Blue. Mr. Seabolt is serving in the south Pacific. 27 Apr 1945; p. 3: Ponchatoula, La., April 25 - William E. "Bert" Branch died today of a heart attack. He was a resident of Ponchatoula for the past 55 years; a former member of the town council. He was born in Hartford, Mich. on 15 Apr 1868 and came to Ponchatoula in 1890. In 1903 he married Miss Jeanne Pujol of New Orleans. Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons, John Alva Branch, serving in the Pacific, Charles Branch, stationed in Shreveport, and Lt. Lucien Branch, U. S. Navy, now at sea; a sister, Mrs. S. W. McClelland of Ponchatoula; one brother and three sisters in Michigan. 4 May 1945; p. 1: Loren O. Eastman, 76, passed away Saturday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Monday at Joiner cemetery, north of Robert. He lived in Loranger many years; was a Spanish War veteran. Surviving relatives include his widow; two sons, Fred E. and Claude Eastman; one daughter, Mrs. Milton Perron; four brothers, Fred A., Leroy, Charlie and Albion Eastman; three sisters, Annie, Ethel and Zylpha Eastman of Hammond. 4 May 1945; p. 6: In Memoriam - Dairl Eugene Matthews; born 4 March 1944, died 22 April 1945 - The Dairl Matthews Family. 11 May 1945; p. 1: Ernest W. Hebert, 76, passed away Monday at home in New Orleans. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Hammond with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. The family lived in Hammond more than 20 years, where he was in business with his brother, Harry M. Herbert; moved to New Orleans in 1925. Survivors include his widow; three sons, Harold Herbert of Jackson, Miss., Donald Herbert of Vicksburg, Miss. and Ernest Lee "Buster" Herbert of New Orleans; two daughters, Mrs. F. R. Smith and Mrs. I. B. Hoover of New Orleans; one brother, Harry M. of Hammond. 11 May 1945; p. 3: Mrs. Emily Elizabeth Wilson was born in London, England 24 January 1885 and died in Loranger 29 April 1945. She married Harry R. Wilson in England; they went to Canada where their three children were born; later moved to Chicago, Ill. In 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, son Fred and daughter Vera moved to Loranger; the older son, Bernard, remained in Chicago. Fred returned to Chicago, but Vera remained here; later moving with her family to New Orleans. She is survived by her husband; her daughter, Mrs. Charlie Bennett of New Orleans; sons, Fred of Chicago, and Bernard in the Army and stationed in Fla.; seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Amite May 2nd; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. 11 May 1945; p. 6: George W. Benson passed away Sunday at his home east of Hammond. Funeral services were held Monday; on Tuesday the body was shipped to New Orleans for interment in Metairie cemetery, beside the body of his wife. He is survived by a son, Lawrence Benson of New Orleans; and a daughter, Mrs. Richard B. Tewell, the former Lotta Mae Benson. 18 May 1945; p. 6: James Glenn Farrell passed away May 7th in New Orleans. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 8th in Independence with interment in the Stevens cemetery. He is survived by his widow, the former Mary Kluchin, of Independence. 18 May 1945; p. 6: C. G. "Fred" Schafer passed away in Jackson, La. last Tuesday. He was a lifelong resident of Ponchatoula; born 5 February 1880. He married Elizabeth Nuttal, who preceded him in death in November of last year. Funeral services were held last Wednesday in Ponchatoula with interment in Wetmore cemetery. He was district attorney from 1900 to 1908 and district judge from 1908 to 1924. He was the son of the late Judge T. C. W. Ellis, who was judge of the civil district court in New Orleans for 50 years. He was educated at Centenary college at Jackson, La., received his law degree from Tulane in 1894; married in 1896 to Miss Maude Addison, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Robert S. Ellis, Jr. who is present judge of the district court in Amite, and Lloyd A. Mrs. West was the eldest daughter and third child of the late James W. Patterson of Natchez. She was married in 1888 to Dr. Thomas Claiborne West of Natchez, where they resided. He preceded her in death a number of years ago. His mother was the former Mary Holbein of Corpus Christi, Texas. The family lived for many years in Amite. He ran a hardware business in Hammond for the past 25 years, which his son, James Lewis, still operates. She was born in Alia Province of Palermo on 29 June 1870; moved to the U.S. in 1894 and lived in Hammond more than 37 years.
