Funeral services were held Saturday in Gretna; interment was in McDonough cemetery following services at St. Joseph's Catholic church. She is survived by her husband, Phillip J. Lagarde of Algiers; two daughters, Mrs. M. E. Meyers and Mrs. J. Hawkins; two sisters, Mrs. Guy McChain of Hammond and Mrs. Aubrey Settoon of Ponchatoula; four brothers, Capt. W. S. Sheldon of New Orleans, Harold Sheldon of Chicago, R. J. Sheldon of Albany and Capt. Fred Sheldon of New Orleans; two grandchildren. 4 Jan 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Willard B. Dugas, husband of the former Elizabeth Pitcher, of Hammond; and member of a prominent family of Assumption parish and Baton Rouge, died in a New Orleans hospital this past Monday. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Baton Rouge with interment in Roselawn cemetery there. He was employed by Standard Oil. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Willard J. and Clay Dugas; nine brothers and sisters. 4 Jan 1946; Sec. 1, p. 2: Mrs. Jimmie Hunter Noble passed away Thursday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Thursday at Poole Funeral Home. The remains were taken to Forrest City, Ark. for burial on Friday. She was a resident of Hammond for the past 30 years. Her sister, Miss "Pop" Hunter preceded her in death last February. Her remains were accompanied to Arkansas by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Forbes, Mr. and Mrs. George Gessner of Meridan, Miss. and Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Dodson of Mandeville. [Relation- ship not given.] 4 Jan 1946; Sec. 1, p. 4: Card of Thanks - By Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Long - for sympathy regarding the death of their son, Waldo, on December 4th, while on duty in the Pacific. 4 Jan 1946; Sec. 2, p. 1: Homer, La., Dec. 31 - G. M. Tinsley, 77, a Claiborne parish farmer, died Sunday at his residence, 7 miles north of Homer. Services were held at the residence on Tuesday; burial in Old Town cemetery at Haynesville. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Belle McEachern; eight children who include, Dr. G. J. Tinsley of Hammond, president of Southeastern Louisiana College, Mrs. Vallie White of Greenville, Miss., Mrs. A. L. Kendrick of Ruston, La., Mrs. Cora Ball of Roswell, N. Mex., W. B. Tinley of Plainview, Tex., Mrs. H. L. Bufkin of Homer, Mrs. Maxine Martin of Homer; one brother, J. L. Tinsley of Ruple. The Tinsleys celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 16 Aug 1943. 4 Jan 1946; Sec. 2, Loranger News: Percy Lewis, former resident, recently discharged from the army, was buried in Briar Patch cemetery on Saturday, December 29th. He attended grammer school here and several years ago moved his family to Livingston parish. 4 Jan 1946; Sec. 2, p. 4: Ida P. Puls died at her Loranger home on December 29th. She was one of Loranger's pioneer citizens. She was born 23 March 1877; married Fred H. Puls in 1895. He preceded her in death on 24 November 1926. Two sons and a daughter died in infancy. She is survived by two sons, Harold L. of Loranger and Elmer E. of Hammond; seven grandchildren; two sisters and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at Thomas Funeral Home. Wilbur Carroll, were held Wednesday with the Thomas Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. She is survived by her husband; one son, Hugh; one daughter, Katherine; one sister, Mrs. L. D. McGehee. 11 Jan 1946; Sec. 1, p. 2: Mrs. Georgia Peco, 72, died Wednesday at her home in Hammond. Funeral arrangements await arrival of relatives from Chicago; interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery. She lived in Hammond most of her life; her husband passed away eleven years ago. She is survived by four sons, Leo, Marion, Ben and Nat Peco; five daughters, Mrs. Victoria Morgan, Mrs. Lena Peco, Mrs. Josephine Pittaro, Mrs. Frances Cassa and Mrs. Mary Cassa - the two latter from Chicago. 11 Jan 1946; Sec. 1, p. 4: Willie Jackson, 56, one of Hammond's best known negro citizens died Sunday. Services await the arrival of a son who is in the Navy; expect to be held Sunday at Greenfield Baptist church with burial in the colored section of Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. He was an ice man and operator of Christian Cafe. He is survived by his wife and a large number of sons and daughters. 11 Jan 1946; Sec. 2, p. 3: Mrs. Katie Reaves Eubanks, 66, passed away Monday in Baton Rouge. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Hammond with interment in Greenlawn cemetery. The Eubanks family lived in Hammond a number of years; moved to New Orleans. For the past 2 1/2 years she has lived in Baton Rouge. She is survived by one son, Claude R. Eubanks; one daughter, Mrs. Agnes Treat of Wharton, Tex.; two grandchildren, Claudia and Michael Eubanks. Her husband, C. W. Eubanks, preceded her in death several years ago. 11 Jan 1946; Sec. 2, p. 4: Frank Henry Breckwoldt, Sr., 79, died December 30th. Funeral services were held Monday, December 31st at his home east of Hammond; burial was in Bankston cemetery with the Poole Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He lived in Hammond 53 years, coming south from Minnesota where he was born on 26 November 1866. He married Miss Bertha Ackenberg April 18, 1889. To this union, three children were born: Frank, Jr., Mrs. Hilda B. Darouse, and Anna Breckwoldt who is deceased. Mrs. Breckwoldt died in 1900 and daughter Anna died in 1901. He married second, Miss Nora Murphy and to this union four children were born - three survive: Mrs. Emma Fuhrman, Fred J. Breckwoldt and Charles Edward Breckwoldt. The second Mrs. Breckwoldt died in 1936. 11 Jan 1946; Sec. 2, p. 5: Mrs. Oscar D. Varner, 38, wife of Rev. Varner of the Church of God, died Thursday, January 3rd in a New Orleans hospital. Funeral services were Saturday; remains were taken to Laurel, Miss. for burial. The Varner's had only been in Hammond one year; previously both were students in Anderson, Ind. She is survived by her husband and an infant daughter, born on Christmas Day in Hammond. [From obit in next week's issue, Sec. 2, p. 4: She was the former Ruby Cheeks of Ellisville, Miss.; born 16 Sept. 1906. She taught school at Muncie, Ind. prior to her marriage. Besides her husband and daughter, she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cheeks of Laurel, Miss.; four brothers, Walter, Jimmie, Grady, and Charles Cheeks; four sisters, Mrs. John Austin, Mrs. Bud Wilson, Mrs. Viva Mapp and Mrs. Carlton Myrick.] 18 Jan 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Charles Raymond Robinson died at his home in Tampa, Fla. January 7th. He lived in Hammond many years, where his father, the late Dr. J. L. Robinson, was a leading physician and operator of the Central Drug Store. Raymond left here about 20 years ago and became affiliated with Sears-Roebuck in Tampa. Funeral was Wednesday in Tampa, with interment in Tampa cemetery. He is survived by a son, Julius, recently discharged from the Navy; a daughter, Miss Dorothea Robinson; one brother, John L. Robinson of Shreveport; one niece, Mrs. Sidney Gomez of Hammond. 18 Jan 1946; Sec. 1, p. 4: Loranger News - Mrs. Margaret Rumpf, 88, died January 12th. She married Mr. Jacob Rumpf in 1885 and came to Loranger with him and daughter, Lydia, in 1914; two sons remained in Wisconsin, George L. in Portage and Ed in Milwaukee. The daughter, Mrs. Paul G. Ricketts lives in Hammond for the past 15 years. Mrs. Rumpf moved to Hammond to be with them. Mr. Rumpf died in 1936 and was buried in Portage, Wisc., their old home. Services were Sunday at Thomas Funeral Home; body was taken to Wisconsin to be buried by her husband. Son of Mary Frances Rhody Graphia. He would have been 19 last October 10th. 25 Jan 1946; Sec. 1, p. 2: Murray Barnell Stafford, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Murray D. Stafford, died January 19th in Independence. He was born January 12th and immediately taken to the hospital a placed in an incubator. Services were held last Saturday at Thomas Funeral Home; burial in a cemetery near Livingston. 25 Jan 1946; Sec. 2, p. 1: Miss Jean Louise Walker, 76, died Sunday at her home in Hammond. Funeral services were held Monday at Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. She is survived by a brother, W. J. Walker of Hammond. [From her obit in 1 Feb issue, Sec. 1, p. 4: She was the only daughter of Andrew J. Walker and Louise Barbour Walker; born in Clay County, Mo. on 21 February 1871. She graduated high school in Hastings, Neb. where she taught for 6 years. She also taught in Galesburg, Ill. for 3 years. She lived in Chicago, Ill. 24 years where she was in Nurses Training school and the surgical wing of Cook County Hospital. She lived in Hammond the past 15 years.] 1 Feb 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Mrs. Marie Blanchard Benson, 66, of Hammond, died at home Monday. She was the widow of Harry Benson, retired lumberman; moved to Hammond in 1910. Services were delayed until today, pending the arrival of a son, Master Sgt. Harry Benson who is stationed in California. Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond; Thomas Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She is survived by two sons, M/Sgt. Harry Benson and Edward Benson of Hammond; one daughter, Mrs. Louise B. Lanier of Hammond; two sisters, Mrs. Sidney Dupre and Mrs. Ernest Dupre of Franklin; one grandson and one grand- daughter. 1 Feb 1946; Sec. 1, p. 4: Thomas Walter Temple, 2 year old son of Pfc. and Mrs. Harvey Temple, died Saturday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Monday at the family residence; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. Pallbearers were Thomas Scott and Harvey A. Temple, Sr., the two grandfathers; and Walter Temple and Ottis Davis, the two uncles. He is survived by his parents; a brother, Harvey Aldridge Temple; a sister, Margaret Diane Temple. Pfc. Temple has been overseas since last July and was last heard from three months ago in Korea. 1 Feb 1946; Sec. 1, p. 4: In Memoriam - Philip Giannobile - died 22 January 1935 - by wife and children. 1 Feb 1946; Sec. 2, p. 1: Ponchatoula, La., January 25. - Funeral services were held today, in Hammond, for Mrs. Margaret C. Graham, wife of S. J. Graham, who died Thursday. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Crosby; she was a native of Ponchatoula, born 19 June 1873. She married 26 June 1900 to Mr. Graham. Interment was in Sandhill cemetery. She is survived by her husband and one son, John C. Graham. 1 Feb 1946; Sec. 2, p. 3: William John McIntyre, 46, died Sunday at his home in Memphis, Tenn. He was born in Brookhaven, Miss. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Espirita McIntyre; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. McIntyre of Amite; one brother, G. S. McIntyre of Memphis, Tenn. Services were held at National Funeral Home in Memphis, with interment in Forest Hill cemetery there. 8 Feb 1946; Sec. 2, p. 2: Amite, La., Feb. 4 - Miss Edith Reid of New Orleans, daughter of the late Justice Robert R. Reid, of the state supreme court, was buried in Amite cemetery Sunday. She died in a New Orleans hospital Saturday. She was a native of Amite and lived in New Orleans for the past 32 years. She is survived by her step-mother, Mrs. R. R. Reid; and the following brothers and sisters: Justice Columbus Reid of Hammond, Shelby S. Reid and Horace R. Reid of Amite, Mrs. W. W. Godfrey of Natchitoches, Miss Clara Reid of New Orleans, Mrs. J. P. Freeman of Knoxville, Tenn., Mrs. Quincy Werlein of Vicksburg, Miss., Mrs. W. H. Cooper and Mrs. Duncan Kemp of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Byard Edwards of Ponchatoula. 15 Feb 1946; Sec. 1, p. 2: Card of Thanks - Recent death of T. N. King - by wife, Mary A. King, and family. 15 Feb 1946; Sec. 1, p. 2: Mrs. Theresa Narretto Larkin, 91, pioneer parish citizen, died last Friday and was buried Saturday. She lived all her life in Tangipahoa parish. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. J. Caesh of Hammond. Several other sisters preceded her in death. McKneely Funeral Home of Ponchatoula was in charge of arrangements. 15 Feb 1946; Sec. 2, p. 1: John E. Zachary died last Friday at his Woodland Park home. Funeral services were held Saturday at Amite; interment was in Amite cemetery. He is survived by a son, Allen Zachard; a daughter, Mrs. Redic Sibley. His wife preceded him in death several years ago. 22 Feb 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Daniel Fazekas, Sr. passed away Saturday in Hammond. Services were Monday at Federated church. He was a native of Szentes, Hungary. He and Mrs. Faezekas celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 11th. She was born in Zsambok, Hungary. They came to the U.S. in 1892 and were married in 1896 at Bridgeport, Conn. In 1898 they came to Louisiana; since 1907 they have made Hammond their home. Surviving relatives include his wife and the following children: Daniel Fazekas, Jr. of Baton Rouge; Shandor Fazekas, Charles Fazekas and Mrs. Emile Cappe, all of New Orleans; Mrs. Hiram Sharpe of Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren. Interment was in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. 22 Feb 1946; Sec. 1, p. 2: Mrs. Lula Killian Haight, widow of Wm. R. Haight who served many years as mayor of Ponchatoula, died at the family home west of Ponchatoula Tuesday. Funeral services were held Wednesday; interment was in Wetmore cemetery. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Killian of New Orleans. She and her husband moved to Ponchatoula in 1907. She is survived by the following children: Frank, of New Orleans; Captain Rufus, of Monroe; Ed, of Ponchatoula; Mrs. Matt Muller, Mrs. Harry P. Hungate and Miss Rosalie Haight all of Ponchatoula; Mrs. J. Earl Pedelahare of New Orleans. 22 Feb 1946; Sec. 2, p. 4: Loranger News - Deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs. Edward Cory in the loss of her mother, Mrs. Statham. Funeral services were February 14th. 1 Mar 1946: Sec. 2, p. 6: Samuel Randall, well known negro citizen of Hammond, passed away Friday, February 15th. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 17th; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. His surviving relatives include three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Walker, Mrs. Stella Miles and Mrs. Gussie Johnson; two brothers, William and Edward Randall; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Josephine Randall. 8 Mar 1946; Sec. 2, p. 1: James Harry Spaulding died at his home in Hammond Saturday. He was a native of Eau Claire, Wis.; later moving to Oshkosh, Wis. where he first married and where a son of that union, J. H. Spaulding, Jr. was born. He came to Hammond 25 years ago married second to Miss Clara Gill of Greensburg on 22 Dec 1922. He is survived by his widow; son, J. H., Jr. of Geanville, Wis.; daughter, Clara Evelyn, 16, and three grand- children. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Thomas Funeral Home; interment was at Greensburg. 15 Mar 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Frank Mark Starkey, 41, passed away Saturday at his home in Hammond. He was the son of the late, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Starkey; born in New Orleans, but spent his entire life in Hammond. In 1926 he married Miss Rose Lee Smith, and to this union four children were born; three survive. Funeral services were held Monday; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. Surviving relatives include his widow; one son, Pvt. Frank M. Starkey, Jr. in U.S. Army at Scott Field, Ill.; two daughters, Burnita and Ramona Starkey, both students at the Southeastern Training School. 15 Mar 1946; Sec. 2, p. 2: Fred C. Weist, life long resident of Tangipahoa parish, died Thursday at a New Orleans hospital. He was born 8 May 1858. He was secretary to the police jury continuously since 1911; he lived at Amite. Funeral services will be today at McKneeley Funeral Home in Amite; interment will be in Amite cemetery. His surviving relatives include his wife; and a son, Jules Weist. He was an uncle of Norman P. Vernon, clerk of the court. 15 Mar 1946; Sec. 2, p. 2: Vincent Deliberto, 35, passed away Wednesday at a New Orleans hospital. Funeral services will be today at Holy Ghost Catholic Church; interment will be in Rose Memorial Park at Hammond. His surviving relatives include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Deliberto, Sr.; his widow, the former Sadie Camallo of Reserve; one son, Charles Deliberto; three brothers, Ciro, John and Sam Deliberto; two sisters, Mrs. Anthony Mele and Mrs. Frank John Graziano. 22 Mar 1946; Sec. 1, p. 3: Mrs. George Joyal, 68, died Wednesday in Hammond. Funeral services will be held today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. Crawford, in Kentwood. She has been living with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Nat Kent, and worked at the Wiginton Infirmary. She is survived by two sons, Lt. George Joyal, Jr. of San Diego, Calif. and Clifford Joyal of Laurel, Miss.; three daughters, Mrs. G. Crawford of Kentwood, Mrs. Wm. Weidefeld of Baltimore, Md. and Miss Ethel Joyal, a member of the Kentwood faculty. Mrs. Joyal was a granddaughter of the late Amos Kent and a sister of the late Nat Kent. 22 Mar 1946; Sec. 2, p. 4: In Memoriam - S/Sgt. Hollis Degenhardt - born 17 March 1922, died 5 December 1944 - father, mother and two brothers. 12 Apr 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Percy Allan Corkern, II, 3 yr. old son, and only child, of Rev. and Mrs. Percy A. Corkern, died Wednesday in Pearsoll, Tex. His remains were brought to Independence for services on Thursday. Mrs. Corkern is the former Edna Evans of Independence and served on faculty there several years. Her sister is Mrs. Juel J. Bernard of Hammond. 12 Apr 1946; Sec. 1, p. 6: Bert John Streeck died Tuesday in a Milwaukee hospital. Funeral services were Wednesday in Milwaukee. Surviving relatives include one brother, Charles Streeck of New Orleans; two sisters, Miss Rae Streeck of Hammond and Mrs. Hatton Hinkel of New Orleans. Another brother, Emmett Streeck, died last summer. 12 Apr 1946; Sec. 2, p. 4: Loranger News - Mrs. George Overmier was saddened last week by the news, her youngest brother, Frank Kamke, of Wausau, Wis., died April 2nd. He leaves a wife; five daughters; two sons; two brothers and four sisters to mourn his death. Two children preceded his in death. They lived in this community at one time. Mrs. Kramke is a sister of Mrs. Glide Overmier. 12 Apr 1946; Sec. 2, p. 5: Dr. Raoul A. Menville, of Baton Rouge, dean emeritus of L. S. U., College of Chemistry and Physics, died Friday March 29th. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. G. Krentz of Hammond. 19 Apr 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Leon Norman, 58, former Hammond resident, drowned Monday when his car plunged into a river near his home at Brownsville, Tenn. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Brownsville. He is survived by his widow; three brothers, Joe and Louis of Brownsville, Tenn. and Henry of New Orleans; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Lockwood of Shreveport and Mrs. Isabel Gibson of Mena, Ark.; a nephew, Galen E. Norman of Hammond; two nieces, Mrs. Hurlin Temple and Orella Bunce of Hammond. 19 Apr 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Leonard F. Husser died Thursday at his home. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Husser, Sr. and husband of the former Miss Zilla Brown, who preceded him in death. He would have been 69 years old on the 5th of May. Services at St. Dominick Catholic church; burial in adjacent cemetery. His survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ivy Brunett; one son, Murriel Husser; two sisters, Mrs. Angeline Brown and Mrs. Laura Bahm; one brother, Louis L. Husser, all of Husser; and a number of nieces and nephews. 19 Apr 1946; Sec. 1, p. 1: Mrs. Aubry J. Henkle, the former Miss Georgie Rownd, died last Saturday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Hammond; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. She was 23 years old; the daughter of Mrs. Sallie Rownd and the late Leslie Eugene Rownd. She and Mr. Henkel were married last June 2nd in San Antonio, Texas where he was with the Army Air Corps. Surviving relatives include her husband; infant daughter, Cheryl Lynne, who was born April 5th in Hammond; her mother; one sister, Mrs. Ray Durand; one brother, Lionel Rownd. 19 Apr 1946; Sec. 1, p. 2: Elmer Leon "Jack" Beever was killed in an accident in Kankakee, Ill. on March 22nd, while unloading telephone poles. His widow is the former Florence Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Anderson. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons and three daughters. 19 Apr 1946; Sec. 1, p. 4: Husser News - Word was received that Mrs. Laura Bahn Graves, of Franklinton, was buried last Sunday at Clifton. 19 Apr 1946; Sec. 1, p. 4: Husser News - The mother of Mrs. Muriel Hughes died in Ala.; her remains were brought to Tangipahoa for burial. 19 Apr 1946; Sec. 2, p. -: Morris Delbert Bauers, 21, drowned last Thursday while in the act of saving the life of 11 year old Curtis Wittie. Funeral services were held last Sunday at the Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Sand Hill cemetery, near Wesley chapel. He was a native of Sigel, Pa.; spent three years in the Army Air Corps. He is survived by his wife, the former Patsy Wittie; son, Gary Lee Bauers; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Bauers; two brothers and one sister. Young Mrs. Bauers is the granddaughter of Ed Robertson of Hammond. The tragedy occurred at Morrisons Camp on the Tangipahoa River. [A Card of Thanks appears in the May 3rd issue in Sec. 2. Funeral services were held Monday. He was born 16 October 1884 in Little Rock, Ark. and married Miss Theresa Connally of Kentwood on 28 December 1910. He joined the Kentwood Baptist church 37 years ago.
