"Red" Downey, 39, was killed 1 1/2 miles west of Hammond Thursday of last week, while walking to his home near Baptist. He was struck by a car driven by Frank Nemeth of Albany. Downey was a veteran of World War 2 and unmarried. Funeral services were held last Sunday at Baptist; interment was at Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. His survivors include two sisters, Mrs. J. T. Landry of Hammond and Mrs. Luther Bankston of near Baptist; two brothers, Charles Downey of Paducah, Ky. and Glover Downey of Pumpkin Center. 2 Jan 1948; p. 4: Mrs. Mae Culbertson Yokum, 34, died December 25, 1947 in Hammond. Funeral services were held Friday at Thomas Funeral Home in Ponchatoula; interment was in Catholic cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Chascella Yokum of Ponchatoula; two daughters and three sons; one brother, Robert Culbertson of Amite; sisters, Mrs. Jessie Sharp of Ponchatoula and Mrs. Mary Miles of Texas City, Texas. 2 Jan 1948; p. 10: Mrs. Katie C. Boyer, 68, died Saturday in Independence. Funeral services were held Monday at Poole Funeral Home; interment was in Sandhill cemetery, near Ponchatoula. She was the wife of the late Rudolph Poche and Harry Boyer. She is survived by one son, Albert Poche of Shreveport; three daughters, Mrs. Agnes Keeler of New Orleans, Mrs. C. C. Lindsay of Imperial Beach, Calif. and Miss Viola Poche of Philadelphia, Penna.; six grandchildren. 9 Jan 1948; p. 9: Miss Annie Kinchen, 82, retired postmistress and life-long resident of Springfield, died at her home last Saturday. Funeral services were held Sunday at the home of her nephew, A. R. Abels; interment was in Springfield. She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Henry Abels of Springfield, Mrs. S. B. Ellzey and Mrs. Henry Corbin of Hammond. 16 Jan 1948; p. 2: Rudy Prokop, 45, of the Hugarian Colony of Albany was found hanging from a rafter in his workshop Monday. His remains were shipped to Detroit Thursday for cremation and interment there, next to his wife who died two years ago. He is survived by one son, Rudolph Prokop of Detroit, Mich.; one daughter, Edith, who was married during the Christmas holidays and moved to California; five brothers, John, Andy, Joe and Alex Prokop of Albany, and Julius Prokop of Chicago, Ill.; one step- brother, Bill Prokop of Chicago. 16 Jan 1948; p. 5: Mrs. Edgar Whitehead, Sr., 84, died Tuesday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Hammond. His remains were shipped to New York City for cremation and burial. He is survived by three sons, Belle Whitehead of Hammond, Joseph R. Whitehead of New York City and Edgar Whitehead, Jr. of Tonkawa, Okla. 16 Jan 1948; p. 7: Funeral services for Harry D. Wilson, 78, were conducted at Amite last Thursday. Interment was in Amite cemetery. She is survived by three sons and one daughter. 30 Jan 1948; p. 1: Mrs. Pauline T. Lobue, 67, died last Friday at her home in Hammond. Funeral services were held Sunday with the Poole Funeral Home in charge of arrangements; interment was in Rose Memorial Park. Mr. and Mrs. Lobue moved to Hammond 55 years ago; they operated a grocery store until retirement 2 years ago. She is survived by her husband, A. Lobue; four sons, Kelly, Joe, Sam and Roe Lobue, all of Hammond; three daughters, Mrs. L. M. Racine of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Charles Cucchiara and Mrs. H. Ken Garb of Hammond; 12 grandchildren. 30 Jan 1948; p. 3: Mrs. Recy Husser, 29, died Wednesday of last week. Funeral services were held last Friday at Husser; interment was in St. Dominic cemetery. Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Husser, the former Lucille Bohm, gave birth to a daughter, Judith Dianne, at Florida Parishes hospital, in Independence, several days earlier. She is survived by her husband; one other child, Bobbie Jean, age 9; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ike E. Bohm. 30 Jan 1948; p. 7: George Wendelken, 63, died Wednesday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Thursday at Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. O. C. Pantall, Jr. of Hammond and Mrs. Kenneth Phelps of Conroe, Tex.; one son, Henry of Hammond; one brother, Dr. Charles Wendelken of Austin, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Joe Robinson of Nashville, Tenn.; two granddaughters. 30 Jan 1948; p. 9: Mrs. Edna Ellis, formerly of Hammond, died at her home in Dallas, Texas. Judd, 60, died last Saturday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Sunday from Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Judd of Centralia, Ill. His parents died during his infancy and at one year of age he went to live with his aunt, Mrs. Spencer C. Judd. He was a resident of Hammond about 40 years. He married the former Mamie Desouge about 30 years ago. He is survived by his widow; one brother, Alva Judd of New York City; aunt, Mrs. Spencer C. Judd of Sewanee, Tenn. 6 Feb 1948; p. 5: J. Ernest Morgan, 69, died last Friday at his home in Hammond. Funeral services were held Saturday; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss May Hemby; one son, Hemby Morgan; two sisters, Mrs. J. U. Vining and Mrs. Ruth Jean, both of Baton Rouge. 13 Feb 1948; p. 2: George Santangelo, 7, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Santangelo of Independence, was killed Thursday of last week when he was struck by an auto after getting off a school bus near his home, 2 1/2 miles south of Independence. [The 20 Feb edition, p. 7, has a picture of George and names his sister, Mary; and four brothers, Tony, Joe, Mike and Sam, Jr.] 13 Feb 1948; p. 1: The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Heidelberg, II, of Baton Rouge, died shortly after birth Monday in Baton Rouge. Funeral services were held Monday at Amite; interment was in Amite cemetery. His survivors include his parents; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Harry D. Wilson of Amite and Baton Rouge. Mrs. Heidelberg is the former Eloise Wilson of Amite. 13 Feb 1948; p. 2: Joseph R. Primes, 65, died Monday at his home in Hammond. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Hammond; interment was in the Kentwood cemetery. He is survived by his widow; one daughter, Eileen; four sons, Wilbert, Hilbert, C. J. and Wallace Primes. 13 Feb 1948; p. 6: Joel W. "Uncle Joe" Shelton, 77, died Sunday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Monday at the McKneely Funeral Home in Ponchatoula; interment was in Sand Hill cemetery, east of Ponchatoula. He is survived by three brothers, Jesse, Austin and John Shelton; and a host of nieces and nephews in Hammond and vicinity. 27 Feb 1948; p. 2: Mrs. Ingatia Plescia, of Hammond, died in a New Orleans hospital last Thursday. Funeral services were held Saturday in New Orleans. She was a resident of Hammond for more than 35 years. She is survived by her husband and by one son of a former marriage. 27 Feb 1948; p. 4: John R. Callendar, 83, died Saturday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Sunday from Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. He is survived by his widow, the former Mrs. Pearl Dickens of Lucedale, Miss.; four sons, and two daughters; three step-daughters and one step-son; 28 grandchildren. 27 Feb 1948; p. 7: Joseph Dantone, Sr., 84, died Saturday at his home in Hammond. Funeral services were held Sunday in Hammond; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. He was a native of Cefalu, Sicily; he lived in New Orleans for five years before coming to Hammond 41 years ago. His surviving relatives include his widow; four sons, Dr. Joseph Dantone, Jr., Mitchell, Sam and Vincent, all of Hammond; five daughters, Mrs. Jos. Cangelosi of McComb, Miss., Mrs. Jos. Blundo of Independence, and Mrs. John Locascio, Mrs. Vincent Stassi and Miss Christine Dantone of Hammond; two sisters, who live in Baltimore, Md.; 15 grandchildren. 5 Mar 1948; p. 2: Mrs. Leona Ferrara, 73, died Sunday in New Orleans. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Hammond; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. She was a native of Sicily; she and her husband lived in Hammond more than 45 years. She is survived by her husband, N. Ferrara; two sons, Carl and Peter Ferrara of Hammond; three daughters, Mrs. B. Camelo and Mrs. Chas. Distefano of Hammond, and Mrs. Julius Powers of New Orleans; 12 grandchildren and one great, grandchild. 12 Mar 1948; p. 4: Mrs. Conchetta Re, 69, of Hammond, died Saturday in Independence. Funeral services were held Sunday; interment was in Rose Memorial Park at Hammond. She was a native of Sicily and had lived in Hammond 41 years. She is survived by three sons, Pete and Frank Re of Hammond, and Nat Re of New Orleans; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Pitarro of New Orleans and Mrs. Frank Gebbia of New York City; three brothers, Frank and Sam Locascio of Hammond, and Santo Locascio of San Jose, Calif.; four grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Maude Brock of Independence; one son, Percy Johnson of Kentwood; two sisters, Mrs. Morris Bankston of Tickfaw and Mrs. Fannie Cason of Vicksburg, Miss. 9 Apr 1948; p. 14: Kentwood, La., April 9 - Funeral services were conducted here Sunday for George Atherton Kennon, 74, who died in Augusta, Ga. Friday while visiting his daughter. Interment was in Woodland cemetery. He was the son of Dr. Charles Kennon who died in the yellow fever epidemic in Tangipahoa in 1878, and the grandson of Amos Kent, who helped found the town of Kentwood. He is survived by two daughters, Lieut. Helen Kennon of Augusta, Ga. and Mrs. Sudie Johnson of Jackson, Miss.; one son, George A. Kennon, Jr. of Baton Rouge; one brother, Edwin Kennon of New Orleans. 16 Apr 1948; p. 1: James Womack Cabler, 72, died last Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday in Natalbany; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery here. He had lived in Natalbany for the past 40 years. He was born 11 March 1876 and was married to Miss Annie Hanks 27 November 1896, who with nine children survives him, including: Cline Cabler of McComb, Miss., Mrs. Johnnie Justice of Ponchatoula, Carl Cabler of Hammond; Mrs. M. E. Wall, Mrs. E. E. Byrd, Miss Margie Cabler and J. D. Cabler of Baton Rouge; Fred and Mollie Cabler of Natalbany; one brother, Lawrence Cabler of Baton Rouge; one sister, Mrs. Susie Scarborough of Baton Rouge; 13 grandchildren. 16 Apr 1948; p. 3: Mrs. Antoinette Baret Mercier, wife of the late Jules Mercier, died Thursday in a New Orleans hospital. She is survived by four sons, Charles and James Mercier of Hammond, Peery and Horace Mercier of Ponchatoula; two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Egnew and Mrs. Monroe Poche of Ponchatoula; five sisters, Mrs. George Hyde of Hammond, Mrs. E. Null, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Null, Rt. 2 Hammond, arrived Tuesday and were conveyed to Greenlawn cemetery for interment. The remains were returned from Henri Chapelle cemetery, Eupen, Belgium. Besides his parents, he is survived by his widow, the former Clara Peters, and two children, Calvin Edward, 7, and Clara Ray, 6. 23 Apr 1948; p. 1: Mrs. John Bernard Nalty, Sr., 81, died at her daughter's home in New Iberia, Sunday. Funeral services were held Monday; interment was in Rose Hill Catholic cemetery at Brookhaven, Miss. She was the former Mamie Halpin, of St. Louis, Mo. Following her marriage to Mr. Nalty, they moved to Brookhaven, Miss. where all of their children were born. The family moved to Hammond in 1926. Mr. Nalty died twelve years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Provost of New Iberia; six sons, Louis D. and Raymond J. Nalty, Sr. of Hammond; William Halpin, J. Bernard and Leonard A. Nalty of New Orleans, Eugene A. Nalty of Brookhaven, Miss.; one sister, Mrs. C. C. Cummings of St. Louis, Mo.; 18 grandchildren and 5 great, grand- children. 23 Apr 1948; p. 1: Elmer E. Tyler, 56, a stranger in Hammond, but indentified as a member of a prominent Detroit family died here Sunday. His brother, Dr. Frank A. Tyler of Detroit, Mich., gave instructions that his brother be given a Christian burial. Funeral services were held Monday at Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. He was the son of Frank Tyler of Vermont and Marcella Clark, a native of Ireland. He was born in Joliet, Ill. and had been traveling through the south. He also left a sister, Mrs. Eunice Dunlavey, of San Francisco, Calif. 23 Apr 1948; p. 1: Frank Schell, 75, a step-brother of Mrs. George Gould of Hammond, died April 7th at his home in Cashmere, Wash. Mr. Schell and his family lived in Hammond from 1892 to 1917. Besides Mrs. Gould, he leaves four sons; one daughter; a brother, Roy Schell of New Orleans; a sister, Mrs. Laura Muncy of New Jersey. 23 Apr 1948; p. 1: Miss Mary K. Wills, of Washington, D.C., died Monday. Funeral services will be today in Hammond; interment to be in Greenlawn cemetery. The Poole Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Her mother, Mrs. Katie Wills, was a sister of the late Miss W. E. Hunter and Mrs. J. H. Noble. 30 Apr 1948; p. 2: Mrs. O. E. Brown, 57, died Sunday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Monday from Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. She was a resident of Hammond for the past 25 years. She is survived by her husband; one son, W. W. Her body was brought to Thomas Funeral Home Saturday; funeral services were held Sunday with interment in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. She is survived by one son, Chas. Dalma Alford, Jr., a student at Baylor Medical School; one daughter, Ruth Marion Alford, supervisor of neurosurgery at John Hopkins, Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Mrs. George F. Smith, Mrs. Effie Boos and Miss Edna Coyne. 7 May 1948; p. 2: Eugene Stewart Parker, 77, died Wednesday in Hammond. Funeral services were held Thursday from the Poole Funeral Home; interment was in the cemetery at Baptist. He was a resident of Hammond for 36 years. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. W. B. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 28th from her residence on the Hammond-Baton Rouge highway; interment was in Rose Memorial Park at Hammond. She was a resident of Hammond about 40 years. Her surviving relatives include six sons, Levoy, Catino, Sam, John, Mike and Pete Crapanzano, all of Hammond; one daughter, Mrs. Angelo Nicolosi of Rockford, Ill. 7 May 1948; p. 6: Mrs. Emily Wagner, 93rd birthday was on March 31st, wife of the late F. H. Wagner, and mother of Louis B. Wagner of Hammond, died at her home in Minneapolis, Minn. Sunday where she had lived the past 62 years. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Minneapolis. Besides her son Louis, she is survived by another son, A. F. Wagner of Sewickley, Penn.; one sister, Mrs. Clara Riepe of Burlington, Iowa; one brother, August Kupper of Peoria, Ill.; one granddaughter. 7 May 1948; p. 11: Mrs. Augustine Barat Hyde, 53, wife of George Hyde, died Saturday.
