Funeral services for Moody P. Adams, who died at his home in Clinton last Sunday, were held Monday from the First Methodist Church in Clinton. He was a member of the Olive Branch Masonic Lodge No. 52; a native of Greenburg. He had lived in Clinton for nine years and was a former resident of Baton Rouge. He was a Sales Representative of the National Biscuit Company, New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Marie Dean; two sons, Moody, Jr. of Alexandria and John Dean Adams of Clinton; two brothers, C. E. of Greensburg and J. Last rites for R. M. Alexander, 44, who died Monday at the Wiginton Memorial hospital, were held Thursday from the Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery. He was enroute to Cave Tangi to attend the meeting of the Hammond Lions Club when his car collided with a car driven by Simm Lott of Ponchatoula. Mr. Alexander was taken by ambulance to the Wiginton Memorial Hospital in Hammond where he died hours later. He is survived by his wife; one son, Alfred, 13, of Hammond; two daughters, Mrs. Jack Van Volkenburg of Tacoma, Wash. and Mrs. C. P. Hamlin of Rochester, N.Y.; his father, Alfred Alexander of East St. Louis, Ill; one brother, Ross Alexander of Brewton, Ala.; and two sisters, Mrs. F. A. Funeral services for Thomas D. Austin who died Tuesday, May 15, at the family residence, were held Thursday, May 17; interment was in Jerusalem Cemetery in Pumpkin Center. The family moved here from Loranger about five years ago. Mr. Bailey is employed by the Street Dept. of the City of Hammond. Funeral services will be Friday with the Thomas Funeral Home in charge of burial, which will take place in Willie Cemetery, near Folsom. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Pierce, Jr., 14, and Edgar, 10; five daughters, Mrs. Frances Toney and Mrs. Beatrice Holliday of Folsom, Mrs. Edith Mae Kennard and Mrs. Verna Hoover of Hammond, and Mrs. Irma Harper of Loranger. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Vindicator: 1/12/1951 BANKSTON, LONNIE FLYNN Mrs. Lonnie Flynn Bankston, daughter of the late Steven Flynn and Mary Jane Bennett Flynn, was born in the Loranger Community on August 28, 1877, and died at her home on December 31, 1950. She was the wife of Peter O. Bankston, who died December 31, 1936. She spent her entire life in Loranger. She drove the first school bus (with horses) to serve the Loranger school. She was a member of the Loranger Methodist Church and a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 2, in the home, with interment following in Lanier Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mrs. Bankston's grandsons, Charles, Clarence and Wilson DePhillips, Cleo Bankston, Ralph and Adrian Calmes. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Tom Calmes of Baton Rouge and Miss Louise Bankston of Loranger; two sons, Leon of Husser and Roy of Loranger; three sisters, Mrs. Winnie Husser of Amite, Mrs. C. Husser and Mrs. M. J. Forbes of California; one brother, Felder Flynn of Mississippi; nineteen grand- children and fourteen great, grandchildren. Preceding her in death were one brother, Willie Flynn; two daughters, Mrs. Edna Bethel and Mrs. Albert DePhillips; and a son, Pvt. Weinrich received word Wednesday that her mother, Mrs. Bertha Lee Bentzen, C.S., had died while visiting another daughter, Mrs. Ethel Nissen, in Norwalk, Calif. The body will be cremated in Los Angeles Saturday. Mrs. Bentzen, a well known Christian Scientist, spent a number of winters in Hammond. Another daughter, Mrs. Helen Olsen, left Chicago by plane to attend the funeral. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Vindicator: 2/9/1951 BEYL, GEORGE George Beyl, 85, a resident of Natalbany for the past 50 years, was found dead in bed last Tuesday. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Natalbany Baptist Church. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery with the Poole Funeral Home in charge. He was the husband of the late Helen Edwards and the father of the late Alex P. Beyl, who died two years ago. He is survived by three sons, Joe of Natalbany, and Albert and Paul, east of Hammond; one daughter, Miss Frances Beyl of Natalbany; and 28 grandchildren. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Vindicator: 2/9/1951 BICKFORD, PAUL Two men were fatally injured and a third man hospitalized late last Friday when a special freight train crashed into a railroad motorcar, on which they were riding, a few miles north of Kentwood. John Burkette, 55, of McComb, Miss. died instantly. Paul Bickford, 29, of Hillsdale community, five miles west of Amite, died 11:10 p.m. at the McComb Infirmary in McComb, Miss., and the third, a negro, H. Seal, was seriously injured. The men were riding north searching for a break in the telephone lines when the freight, going north, crashed into them. Bickford, a native of Amite, is survived by his widow, the former Vernell Hoyt; two children, Dennis and Paula Gayle Bickford, of Hillsdale; and a half-brother, Malcolm Hastings of Baton Rouge. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Vindicator: 11/16/1951 BLACHE, IDA L. (Bert) Branch; she was born in New Orleans on August 29, 1879; married in Ponchatoula and has been a resident of Ponchatoula since 1903. She is survived by three sons, Charles A. Branch of Hammond, John Alva Branch of New Orleans and Lucien A. Branch of Monroe; one sister, Mrs. Archie Loch of New Orleans. Caesh, 90, of Hammond, died at her home last Monday. Her late husband died 18 (19?) years ago. She was the daughter of the late George and Victoria Narretto, and was born November 24, 1860 at the family home near the Tangipahoa River. She married and came as a bride to live in Hammond. She leaves two sons, W. G. and R. W. Caesh of New Orleans; two daughters, Mrs. Felix Masden of Alexandria, and Mrs. W. M. Berry, Sr. of Hammond; two grandsons, Kenneth Masedn of Alexandria and W. M. Services for William H. Cameron, Jr., 13, who died Sunday, were held Monday from the family home in Hammond; interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Young Cameron was born in Cuba and moved to the States this past December; was a student at Hammond Jr. High until leukemia forced him to quit school. Last rites for Pfc. Cornie E. Carroll, who was killed in Korea on October 9, will be held Sunday from the family residence, with religious services to follow at Jerusalem Church in Pumpkin Center. Poole Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. The young private enlisted in the Army on his 17th birthday and was killed in action ten days before he celebrated his 18th birthday. Interment was in Grace Memorial Cemetery with the Thomas Funeral Home in charge. He died Saturday at the Wiginton Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Tangipahoa parish. His first wife was Miss Helen Gurley, who died in 1919, leaving three daughters. On November 11, 1921 he married Miss Ruth Corbin and to this union was born one son, Lt. Charles Congreve Carter, Jr. He was the son of the late Thomas Lane and Anna Hennen Carter. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Lt. Carter of Quonsot, Rhode Island; three daughters, Mrs. Edward Martin of Stanford, Conn., Mrs. Royce P. Davis of Newport, R.I., and Mrs. Henry Farrow of Bainbridge, Md.; three sisters, Mrs. Elmore T. Chustz, 77, who died last Friday at her home in Independence, were held Sunday from the home of her daughter in Natalbany. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemtery with the Thomas Funeral Home in charge. She was the former Miss Elisa Loustalot Seguley. She spent her early childhood on Union Plantation on the Mississippi River. About 25 years ago she, her husband and their children, all of whom were born in West Baton Rouge parish, moved to Independence. Mr. Chustz preceded his wife in death this past January. She is survived by two sons, Dr. Jos. Chustz of Jackson, Miss. and Frank Chustz of Independence; three daughters, Miss Mary Jane Chustz of New Orleans, Mrs. Gertrude C. Last rites for Morile J. Chustz, of Independence, who died Wednesday, January 17, at Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, were held Friday from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gertrude C. Martin, in Natalbany. Religious services followed from Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church in Independence. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery (Hammond) with the Thomas Funeral Home in charge. He was born in Rougan in 1878. At the age of 21 he married Miss Eliza Loustalot Seguley of Union Plantation on the Mississippi River at Union. After his marriage, he settled in West Baton Rouge Parish where he was engaged in the mercantile, farming and cattle business. In 1921 he moved his family to Independence where he lived until his death. He is survived by his widow; two sons, Frank J. Chustz of Independence and Dr. James A. Chustz of Jackson, Miss.; three daughters, Miss Mary Jane Chustz of New Orleans, Mrs. Gertrude Chustz Martin of Natalbany and Mrs. Joe Gill of Hammond. She was the former Miss Daisye Dean of Osyka, Miss.; and had been a resident of Hammond for the past 25 years. Her husband, who preceded her in death several years ago, was the Illinois Central Railroad ticket agent here. W. Last rites for F. W. Copel, 68, who died Sunday, were held Monday from the Thomas Funeral Home. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Copel and his family moved to Hammond from Cleveland, Ohio about 14 years ago when he retired from the Grasselli Chemical Company. He had suffered from a heart condition during his entire residency in Hammond. Since September he had been confined to his home. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Laura A. GREENE E. Greene Davis passed away last Friday at Wiginton Memorial hospital. He had a long and notable career in the banking circles of Louisiana. He was born at Star Hill, West Feliciana Parish, on October 14, 1877, a son of Dr. E. G. Davis, a pioneer dentist and former Capt. of the 1st Louisiana Cav. in the Confederate army. He married in Clinton to Miss Amanda Pipes, a daughter of David W. Pipes; and they are the parents of three children, E. G. Davis, Jr., Anna Pipes Davis, librarian at Southeastern Louisiana College, and Mildred Windsor Davis, connected with the library of the University of North Carolina. Mr. Davis was a 32nd degree Mason and a past president of the Hammond Rotary Club. CARRUTH Coroner J. W. Watson of Baton Rouge, Tuesday listed acute uremia, a kidney ailment, as the probable cause of death of attorney W. Carruth Jones of Kentwood, husband of the former Esther "Boo" McCraney of Roseland. The body of the 36 year old attorney, son of the late Judge W. Carruth Jones, Sr., was found in the capitol annex residence of state Attorney General Bolivar Kemp on Monday. Jones had been missing for three weeks. Kemp said a secretary told him Jones had come to his office on July 25, the same day Kemp left for Washington and then Seattle. The employee testified that Jones told her he was tired and wanted to take a nap in Kemp's residence. Kemp said it was alright for Jones to sleep in the house as they were friends and Jones had worked for Kemp in the legislative bureau. The reading of a will by his attorney changed the funeral and burial plans of the family of J. F. Kerr, who died March 29, at his home between Hammond and Ponchatoula.
