T. H. Services for Mrs. T. H. Abbey of Webb, Miss., mother of Mrs. Jimmy Morrison of this city, who died early Tuesday morning, were held Wednesday afternoon from the family residence in Webb. Interment was in Oak Ridge cemetery in Clarkdale. Mrs. Abbey died in her sleep some time during the early morning hours Tuesday. She had been a semi-invalid for the past four years. Born in Black Hawk, Miss., Mrs. Abbey had been a resident of Webb for the past 50 years. She leaves her husband, planter and president of the Bank of Webb; one son, T. B. Abbey, Jr., of Webb; two daughters, Mrs. James H. Morrison of Hammond and Mrs. Jayne May Jopp of Webb; and one sister, Mrs. J. R. KINCHEN Funeral services for Mrs. Lula B. Abels, widow of the late Henry D. Abels, who passed away on Tuesday of last week, were held February 16 in Springfield. Interment was in Springfield cemetery. Grandsons serving as pallbearers were: G. O. Salassi, Jr. of New Orleans, Edmond Salassi of Baton Rouge, Wilson Abels, Edward Abels and J. R. Abels, all of Springfield and Raymond Abels of Baton Rouge. She was the daughter of the late A. W. Kinchen and Anne Hudson Kinchen of Springfield. She is survived by one son, A. Richard Abels of Springfield; two daughters, Mrs. Edna Salassi of Ponchatoula and Mrs. Lillian Miller of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Corbin and Mrs. S. B. One of Hammond's pioneers, John Q. Adams, died last Friday at the Wiginton Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday from the family residence. Interment was in Grace Memorial cemetery with the Thomas Funeral Home in charge. A native of Minnesota, born March 21, 1871, the family moved to Hammond when it was a log station on the Illinois Central railroad. Adams, the son of a pioneer, was engaged many years in the manufacture of shoes here. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Wright; one son, Warren Adams of Arlington, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Barrett of Chicago, Ill. and Mrs. Elwin G. LEON Last rites for Mrs. Leon Addison, 55, who died from a heart attack at her home in Holden on Monday, February 6, were held Tuesday, February 7, from the Holden Baptist church. Interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. Born November 1, 1872 at Union, Ill. she spent her girlhood days in Marengo. She later moved to Hammond and married Walter Anderson and continued to reside here until 1930; one year after his death. Since 1930, Mrs. Anderson had divided her time between Hammond and points in Illinois, spending the greater part of her time in Kankakee. She was at the home of a daughter in Bradley, Ill. when she passed away. She is survived by five sons, George A. Huitt [Note: In the Card of Thanks, he is recorded as George A. Hewitt.] of Marengo, Ill, a son by a former marriage, Floyd L. Anderson of Chicago, and William T., Alta L, and Fred R. Anderson, all of Kankakee; three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Traylor and Mrs. Joseph Bunnell of Kankakee, and Mrs. Mary F. Andrews of Natalbany, were held Wednesday. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery. Pallbearers included two grandsons: George Peters and Rialda Cloy. She died Monday at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. She was the former Nannie Bell May, daughter of Claiborne and Sally May of McComb, Miss. She and her husband moved to Natalbany in 1904. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Robert Peters of Hammond, with whom she made her home, Mrs. Thelma Cloy of Hattiesburg, Miss., Mrs. Mabel Poltman of McComb, Miss. and Mrs. Hazel Alridge of Gonzales; five sister, two brothers, 4 grandsons and 5 granddaughters. Anthony was buried at Union cemetery Tuesday near the scene of his death and also near his childhood home. He was born on a farm 4 miles east of Tangipahoa, December 29, 1879, the son of Peter and Mrs. Ella Bankston. He is survived by three sons, Dedric of Amite, Amos of Waco, Tex., and Julius. Interment was in Amite cemetery. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Vindicator: 2/3/1950 BARBER, LELAND Leland Barber, 30, died Thursday while driving in his car between Robert and Cooper's School, a few miles east of Hammond. The car collided with a bridge and he was struck in the head by a plank. Barber was a native of Plymouth, N.C., but had lived at Robert for several years. He was married to the former Johnny Oschner, daughter of a former police juror from the 8th Ward. Besides his wife he leaves a small son. Funeral services were held at Thomas Funeral Home; the body was sent to his native home. JOHN H. Funeral services for Dr. John H. Beatty of Amite, who died Wednesday, June 14, were held Friday from the Brown Funeral Home in Amite. Interment was in Amite cemetery. Born and reared in Greenwell, Ill., he moved to Amite at the age of 14. He entered the practice of dentistry in Amite, succeeding Dr. Dan Beatty, his grandfather, and Dr. Chas. Beatty, his father. He was a member of the Tangipahoa Parish school board for 22 years. He served as mayor of Amite and president of the Amite Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Beatty married the former Lottie Peck of New Orleans, who survived him. He is survived by two daughters, Miss Emily Beatty of the English department faculty, Southeastern Louisiana College, and Mrs. Adeline Beatty Gay, teacher in the Amite Grammer School for 25 years; two brothers, David L. Beatty of Dallas, Tex, and William D. Beatty of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Gray, Mohawk, Ariz., and Mrs. Francis Preckwinkle, Portland, Ore. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Vindicator: 11/17/1950 BENCAZ, HAZEL MARGARET A 7 year old boy shot and fatally injured his half sister at nearby Pumpkin Center last Sunday while playing with a pistol. Hazel Margaret Bencaz, 21, died after being struck by a bullet fired by the boy, John T. Hudson, Jr. The shooting occurred at the home of an uncle of the victim. She had accompanied her mother and stepfather, John T. Hudson, and the boy on a weekend visit to Pumpkin Center. A native of Maurepas, Miss., Miss Bencaz had been residing in New Orleans about four years at the Hudson residence. Interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. A native of New Orleans, she had been a resident of Tangipahoa parish for the past 48 years, living about a mile east of Natalbany. MORGAN J. Morgan Bishop, 46, died Saturday in Oschsner's Foundation Hospital in New Orleans. Funeral services were held Sunday in Hammond. Interment was in Greenlawn cemetery; the Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of burial. He was a native of Walnut Grove, Miss.; came to Hammond in 1937 from Jackson, Miss. He served as manager of the Penney store from 1937 to 1947. He went to work for Sears and was transferred to Greenville, S.C. About one month ago he resigned because of ill health and returned to Hammond and his family. Joseph M. Blache, 75, died at his home in Hammond Thursday. He was a native of New Orleans; son of the late Gustave and Pauline Lafargus Blache. His grandfather served as secretary of state during the administration of Governor White. He married April 6, 1900, Miss Ida J. Schriener, who survives. She is survived by five sons, Wilson, Monroe, Mannie Kent of Baton Rouge, Carmon Kent of Deerford, and Leroy Kent of Port Allen; two daughters, Mrs. Ernest Forbes of Hammond and Mrs. Eugene Bender, Jr. of New Orleans; 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Vindicator: 6/9/1950 BOLLIN, MARY JANE Death claimed one of Hammond's oldest citizens Friday, June 2, when Mrs. Mary Jane Bollin died at the home of her son, Laurence Bollin. She was the daughter of the late William and Margaret Elliott of Bogalusa. She was married to Severin Bollin in 1894 and had been a resident of Hammond for the past 46 years. Mr. Bollin owned and operated a grocery store in Hammond prior to his death in 1927. This past February 14th, Mrs. Bolin celebrated her 81st birthday. She was the mother of four children, three of whom are living: Mrs. Donna McGowan, Laurence Bollin of Hammond, and Howard Bollin of Ponchatoula. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Esther Hunt of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews. The former Miss Nella Isla Exnicios, Sister Mary was the daughter of the late Joseph T. Exnicios and Ida Curry. She was 62 and had been a member of the religious order for 40 years, most of which time was spent as a teacher of music at Dominican Holy Ghost school in Hammond. Survivors include two half-brothers, Marshall and John Exnicios of Washington, D.C. Mrs. Boothe was 88 years, 3 months and 17 days of age. Paul J. Clement, one of the best known citizens of Ponchatoula was the victim of a tragic accident last Friday when he was struck by an auto driven by E. I. McPhaul of Ponchatoula. She was born July 18, 1888, the daughter of the late Alice Daigre and Beauregard J. Villere of New Orleans. Her grandfather, the late Pierre Villere, served for one term as governor of Louisiana.
