"The Rice Wizard" lived in Acadia parish for 40 years. Born, Park County, Ind. 26 Apr 1852. Came to Crowley in 1889. Survived by widow and two daughters by a former marriage, both of whom reside in Kansas City; a son, Sol Wright, Jr. and three daughters, Mrs. T. A. Warner of Hammond and Edith and Rosemary of Crowley. 1 Mar 1929; p. 1, col. 5: Mrs. J. Y. Sanders, 84, widow of J. Y. Sanders and mother of Jared Y. Sanders, ex-governor of LA, died Wednesday in Hammond. Born, Bessie Wofford. Survived by three daughters; Misses Bessie W. and Diana Sanders, and Mrs. Sallie Ogden; three sons, Jared Y. Sanders, Dr. T. Wofford Sanders and T. T. Sanders. Funeral Thursday, after which the body will be sent to Franklin for burial. 8 Mar 1929; p. 2, col. 3: Clarence Emerson Holmes, 53, grandson of Peter Hammond, one of the city's founders, died in Addis, Sunday, 17 Feb 1929. Interment in Grace Memorial Cemetery in Hammond on 18 Feb. A telegraph operator for the railroad, he married Miss Sallie Lanier of Hammond, 1 June 1911. He was son of Edgar Holmes and Levenia Hammond. Survived by four brothers; his sister, Mrs. G. H. Stark, died in Baltimore a few months ago. 8 Mar 1929; p. 3, col. 7: Mr. W. C. Kent died Thursday morning at Kentwood. 8 Mar 1929; p. 4, col. 2: John Ushur, about 45, died at home in Hammond, Sunday. A victim of the flu. He lived in Hammond more than 30 years. Burial was Wednesday; survived by a son. 8 Mar 1929; p. 5, col. 6: Wilson Shaw Holland, died 2 March 1929 at the home of his brother, Clyde S. Holland, in Greensburg, LA. Funeral, Sunday; burial in Greensburg. Mr. Holland was 47, lived in New Orleans; he was the son of the late W. T. Holland who died a few weeks ago. Survived by wife, three children -- Thomas, Angelle and David; and the following brothers and sisters: Clyde S. Holland of Greensburg, Lake Holland of New Orleans, T. M. Interment in Arcola on 30 March. 26 Apr 1929; p. 1, col. 2: Mrs. Louise Desquin Delcourt, 68, widow of the late Dr. A. J. Delcourt, died 19 April at Broussard. Native of Belgium. Mother of Mrs. M. Billeoud, Jr.; Mrs. F. R. Russell and Dr. A. P. Delcourt of Hammond. Funeral was Monday at Broussard. 26 Apr 1929; p. 6, col. 3: James A. Easley, 55, farmer of the New Zion neighborhood near Tangipahoa, was buried at New Zion Cemetery Saturday. Death due to an auto accident near Jackson, LA. Easley died enroute to his home from the Baton Rouge hospital. He was a descendant of one of the oldest families of St. Helena parish, being the grandson of Bayliss Easley. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Elsie Woodward Easley, and several children; three sisters, Mrs. W. D. Hurst, Mrs. C. W. Matthews of Greensburg, Mrs. Jefferson Easley of Montpelier; three brothers, Taylor, William and John Easley of Liverpool. 3 May 1929; p. 1, col. 7: Edward S. Tucker died last Friday at a New Orleans hospital [Touro Infirmary]. Policeman at Ponchatoula for 25 years. Funeral Sunday, burial in Sand Hill Cemetery east of Ponchatoula. Survived by widow and four sons. 10 May 1929; p. 1, col. 5: Walter O. Eldridge died in New Orleans. Funeral was in Amite on 6 May; interment in Amite Cemetery. Native of Beauregard, MS; resident of Amite over 30 years. Survived by brother; Charles R. Eldridge of Amite; four sons, Oscar O. Eldridge of Beaumont, TX, Willie H. Eldridge of Houston, Charles R. Survived by son, Joe Lagatutta. 31 May 1929; p. 1, col. 7: Mrs. W. T. Sweeney, 54, of Hammond, and her grandson, Marvin Roe, 8, son of Mrs. William Roe, were killed near Independence Sunday when their truck went into a ditch. 31 May 1929; p. 7, col. 4: Matha Adelia Starns, 75, widow of the late W. G. McMichael, died Friday in Amite. Born and reared in Tangipahoa parish. Funeral was Sunday; interment in Amite Cemetery. Survived by four daughters, Mrs. Olivia White of Shreveport, Mrs. Bessie Calmes of Independence, Mrs. Vivian Childress of New Orleans and Mrs. George Harpole of Amite; three brothers, Burlin Starns of Hammond, Jim Starns of Independence and Harris Starns of Baton Rouge; one daughter, Mrs. May Daniels of Franklinton. 7 June 1929; p. 1, col. 7: Clarence Freeman, of Hammond, died at New Orleans Monday from injuries received in auto accident. Funeral Wednesday in Hammond. Son of J. I. Freeman, Sr. of Tickfaw. Survived by three brothers, Irvin, Francis and Albert; a number of sisters, including, Mrs. Charles Isom of Tickfaw, Mrs. J. H. Campbell of Hammond and Mrs. Allen of Chicago. 7 June 1929; p. 1, col. 7: Mr. A. C. Perralta, 48, died at home in New Orleans Monday. Former resident of Hammond; his son recently married Miss Norma Rogers of Hammond. Funeral Wednesday in Hammond; burial in Greenwood Cemetery. 14 June 1929; p. 1, col. 3: Mrs. Isabella Parker Andrews, wife of Mr. J. C. Farley of Hammond, died last Friday. Funeral and burial Friday; interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. 21 June 1929; p. 9, col. 5: Willie Carson Strickland, 25, of Greensburg, died at Shanghai, China in the service of the U. S. Navy on 23 April 1929. Burial in the Greensburg Cemetery on Saturday. He had been in the navy 5 years; death due to hemorrhage of the stomach. He was the son of J. T. Strickland of Greensburg. Survived by his father and several brothers and sisters. 28 June 1929; p. 9, col. 7: Mrs. Joseph P. Shelton, 45, died at home in Hammond [on or before June 23rd]. Born Miss Annie Sherwood in East Feliciana parish. Survived by her parents and husband; five sons, William T., James Russel, Norwood Carl, Loyd Denver, and Merriel Allen Shelton; one daughter, Ruth Amy Shelton; one granddaughter, all of Hammond. Interment at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery 7 miles south of Denham Springs. [Issues missing to 30 August 1929] 6 Sep 1929; p. 1, col. 5: Helen Jane Stubbs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Stubbs of Hammond, born 20 February 1927, died 30 August 1929 in a New Orleans hospital. Interment 2 Sept. in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. 6 Sep 1929; p. 2, col. 7: John E. Lavigne died Ponchatoula Sept. 5th. Born near Lee's Landing in October of 1855, he had resided in this section all his life. Survived by widow; four sons and two daughters. 6 Sep 1929; p. 13, col. 7: Thomas H. Jones, 63, died last Friday in Amite. He was a native of Amite. Survived by his widow; three sons, Frank Jones, Thomas Jones, Jr. and Homer Jones of Amite; five daughters, Mrs. E. C. Goff and Mrs. Garfield Dykes of Amite, Mrs. H. J. Heffner of New Orleans, Mrs, Killian Kupper of Ponchatoula and Mrs. Clarence Johnson of Amite. 13 Sep 1929; p. 7, col. 7: P. A. Williams, 66, died at home in Kentwood Thursday, 5 Sept. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery at Kentwood on Friday. M. Tidwell, 81, of St. Helena Parish died at home near Greensburg on Friday, Aug. 30th. Burial in the family cemetery on Saturday. Born in Lincoln County, MS; member of Co. A, MS Light Artillery; moved to LA and resided in St. Helena parish. His three wives were, Misses Mattie and Anna Williams and Mrs. Rosa Strickland, all have died. Survived by one son, Mr. W. L. Tidwell of Livingston; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Tidwell of Kentwood; 10 grandchildren. 27 Sep 1929; p. 5, col. 5: Mrs. Harriet Ellis Rhody, 70, died in New Orleans Monday. Funeral and interment were in Covington. She was the widow of Judge Alfred Rhody of Tangipahoa parish. She was the sister of Miss Gertrude Ellis, principal of La Salle School. Her father was Joseph Ellis. Survived by two daughters, Mrs. R. W. Reynolds of New Orleans and Mrs. R. W. Blossman of Covington; two sisters; 9 grandchildren. 4 Oct 1929; p. 1, col. 7: Mrs. Harriet Gachet, 67, wife of T. Gachet, died in New Orleans last Saturday. Her funeral was conducted by her nephew, Dr. McQueen of Hattiesburg, MS. 4 Oct 1929; p. 1, col. 2: Mrs. Tiny Windham, 38, wife of George Windham, a Hammond farmer, died today. The funeral will take place at Independence. 4 Oct 1929; p. 1, col. 2: Visto Peco, 76, a farmer near Hammond, died Monday and was buried Tuesday. He was a native of Italy. 11 Oct 1929; p. 4, col. 5: Mrs. Mary Devall, 54, died 3 Oct., resident of Hammond. Survived by 5 children; Mrs. Herbert Montgomery, Mrs. Edward Kirby, Katie Devall and Wilton Devall of Hammond; and Mrs. Lucius Courvelle of Opelousas.
