Carter Rowland of Springfield died in a car accident early Sunday morning. A brother and two sisters were also in the accident. The father is a representative to the state legislature from Livingston parish. An uncle is Judge W.S. Rownd of Hammond. Services were Monday afternoon in Springfield. Jan.17,1930; Sec. 1, p.1, col.1: Eugene A. Tulian, resident of Hammond,passed away Jan. 10. Born in Ohio, he was in his 70th year. Services were Sunday from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martin with whom he had lived with for some time. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, Hammond. Jan. 17, 1930; Sec.1,p.1,col.4: Miss D. Himmler, age 55, drowned in Tangipahoa river Tuesday. No body was found--only hat, coat, shoes and hose on bank of the river. She had been under the care of a physican for the past year. Jan. 17,1930: Sec.1,p.3,col.4: Mr. John Lorenzo Bylsma,age 45, died in Orlando, Florida of cerebral meningitis. Born in Hungryford, Michigan Nov.16, 1884. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bylsma of Hammond. He is also survived by two sons, Peter of Boston, Mass. and Ralph, and one daughter, Dotty who graduated last year at Hammond High. Two sisters and one brother. Mrs. Colon Draper of Detroit, Michigan, Miss Margaret Bylsma of Hammond and Myles Bylsma. Jan. 17, 1930; Sec.2,p.1. (In Memoriam) Virginia Varisco Spataro Died Jan. 1929. (A Tribute on the 1 year anniversary of death by parents and sister --not named. Jan. 17, 1930; Sec. 2, p.2. Leslie E. Bannister, long a resident of Kentwood, died at his home Saturday morning. Born Oct. 29, 1858. He had lived all his life in Louisanna. He and his wife celebrated their golden anniversary last year. He is survived by his wife and several children. Funeral was Sunday afternoon with burial at Woodlawn cemetery, Kentwood. Jan. 17,1930; Sec. 2, p.2. (Loranger locals) Mr. Chadwick,Sr. died suddenly in Port Arthur, TX on December 31, 1929. His wife preceded him in death by a little over one year. Three sons, one daughter-in-law, and six daughters survive. Daughter-in-law is the former Miss Olie Lang, now living in Port Arthur and is well known here. Jan. 24, 1930; Sec.1, p.1,col.1; Mr. James M. Thomas, former citzen of Hammond, died Jan. 19, 1930 at the age of 98 at his home in Deerford, La. He is survived by 3 sons and 1 daughter. His daughter, Mrs. E. M. Browning and one son, Mr. M. Thomas reside in Hammond. Jan. 24, 1930; Sec. 1, p.1,col.1; Mr. J. R. Duke life long resi- dent of Donaldson died Sunday. His brother is R. M. Duke of Ham- mond. Burial was Monday. Jan. 24, 1930: Sec.1. p.1,col.6. W. T. McCarley about 35 was found in serious condition Sunday at the Ill. Central Station. He was sent to Charity Hospital in New Orleans where he died Tuesday. Unconfirmed report that he was on his way to visit a married sister in Wilson. Jan. 24, 1930; Sec.2, p.3,col.2; Warren L. Kemberlain, Jr. of Amite died of pneumonia. Services were Sunday at the residence in Roseland with burial at the Roseland-Arcola Cemetery. He is suvived by his father Warren L. Kemberlain, Sr., his widow, three children and a brother, Charles Kemberlain. Jan. 31, 1930; Sec.1,p.1,col.2; Mrs. C.A. Crowl of Los Angeles died Jan. 14 of injuries resulting from a car accident. She was 90 years old. Survivors include her husband, two cousins, Mrs. Wm. McKinley of Canton Ohio and aunt Hannah Gould of Hammond and a niece, Mrs. Jinnie Craig of Ponchatoula. Jan. 31,1930;Sec.1, col.4. T.Y. Lambert, 70, of the Bethel Community near Tangipohoa died Monday night. He was a son of James Holley and Mary Lambert of the Bethel Community and spent his entire life at the parental home where his sisters, Mrs. N. Sayre and Miss Arganta Lambert also reside. Burial was at the Lambert cemetery at Bethel. Jan. 31, 1930: Sec. 2,p.1.col.2; Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Lambert and H.B. Lambert attended the funeral of Gibb Lambert at Magnolia, Ms on Monday Dr. Lambert's brother. Mr. Lambert, a native of Tangipohoa, died of heart failure while about household chores at the home of his son at Magnolia on Sunday. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Gibb Lambert. Jan. 31, 1930;Sec.2 p.1.col.3; (Loranger locals) Little child of Mr. and Mrs. Snead Morgan died at their home this week. Funeral was Monday afternoon. Jan. 31, 1930; Sec.2, p.1.col,5; Rits Parecia, 11 months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Parecia,died Saturday. Funeral services were at the Church of the Mater Dolorosa. Jan. 31, 1930; Sec. 2, p.1, col.6. Ralph David,55, died at his home near Independence Friday. Funeral was at the Catholic church. He is survived by a wife and 5 children. Feb. 7, 1930; Sec.1,p.3,col.3;Clyde Wallace,age 29, was killed in New York. He was a graduate of Hammond High School, the son of Mrs. Alice Wallace now of Biloxi, MS and J. E. Wallace of Neoga, Illinois. Miss Charlotte Wallace , his sister, lives in Biloxi. Burial is expected to be in New York but is uncertain because his wife is still in serious condition. (Feb. 14, 1930. Feb. 7, 1930; Sec. 2, p.1; Allen Ricks, negro, about 19 was probably fatally stabbed Sunday night by negro restaurant keeper Joe Lewis in northeast Hammond. Feb.7,1930; Sec. 2, p.2, col.3; Miss Theresa Kent, 79, died in Kentwood Jan.31,1930. She was the daughter of the late Amos Kent and Susan Fluker. She worked for the Amos Kent Realty Company. She lived with her sister, Mrs. Mamie Ellis, for the past 25yrs. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Fannie Kent Tate and a brother, Charles Kent. The funeral was Saturday and burial at Woodlawn cemetery, Kentwood. Feb. 14, 1930; Sec. 1, p.1 col.2; Paul T. Hughey, brother of Mrs. Joseph Stepp, died at his home in Calhoun, GA at the age of 24, following an auto accident. His wife and other relatives survive. Feb. 14,1930; Sec. 1, p.1; A memorial service will be held Sunday at Amite Methodist church for the late Mrs. Bolivar E. Edwards nee Sarah Elizabeth Stewart. Feb. 14,1930;Sec.2,p.1,col.5; Mrs. J. W. Warner died Feb 10 at her home near Covington. Her maiden name was Wilhelmina Dill. Three of her children are in college. Feb. 14, 1930; Sec. 2, p.1, col.6; Antonio Orphanello,77, died at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Orphanello in Independence Tuesday. Services were at the Catholic church of the Mater Dolorosa on Wed. with burial at the Catholic cemetery. He is survived by 2 sons and 1 daughter. These are: Mrs. I. Miceli, J.C. Orphanello, Antonio Orphanello. Feb. 14, 1930; Sec. 2, p.4; Warren P. Eastley, descendant of an old pioneer family, died at McComb, MS Friday, February 7. He was born April 16, 1856 in Tangiapohoa--which was included at that time in the parish of St. Helena. He was the son of Pedelton and Mary Newman Easley. In April 1877 he married Miss Emma George of Tangiapohoa. This marriage was blessed with 7 children. After she died he married two times. He and his family resided here until 1893, then moved to South McComb where he spent the rest of his life. Feb. 21, 1930; Sec. 1, p.1, col.5; Thomas W. Rowe,38, died Monday His mother lives in Wadley, Arkansas. Feb. 21, 1930; Sec. 1, p.1, col.7; Mrs. Cyrus. L Threeton, nee Mamie Brinkley died in New Orleans last Monday after a long illness. She was born in Planterville, MS on October 4, 1875. She married Cyrus L. Threeton Dec. 24, 1893. She lived in Hammond about 20 years and in Amite following their marriage. This union was blessed with six children-two died several years ago. Survivors include Mr. Threeton of Hammond; their children, Clay Threeton of Montgomery Alabama; Mrs. Temple of Tupelo, MS, Miss Elsie Threeton and Sam Threeton of Hammond; a brother in Tupelo,MS and two sisters Mrs. John Dees and Mrs. E. E. Dees of Amite. Services were Tuesday at the 1st. Baptist church. Burial was at Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. Feb. 21, 1930; Sec.1, p.2, col.5; (Springfield notes) Mr. C. S. Barnum died Tues. Feb. 11 and was buried Wednesday in Carter cemetery. His death is mourned by a large number of family and friends. Feb. 21, 1930; Sec. 1, p.2 (See article of Feb.7, 1930; Sec.1, p.3, col.3.) Article gives details of the accident that killed Clyde M. Wallace and his wife Cynithis Hunt Wallace in Lansing, Michigan. They lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her family was from Massachusetts. They were buried at Attlesboro Falls, Mass. Feb. 21, 1930; Sec.1, p.4, col.2; (Notice from Liberty,MS Feb.19) Leon Caufield about 55 died in Clinton, La. Services were held Tuesday at Gloster Presbyterian Church by Rev. Charles Bruce of Liberty. Burial at Clinton in Gloster cemetery. (Unclear if this burial is in LA or MS) Mr. Caulfield was a conductor on the Y and M railroad. He served the parish 1 yr as a representative in the state legislature. He is survived by three brothers, Charles Caufield of Brookhaven, MS, W. V. Caulfield, mayor of Gloster, A. D. Caufield, superintendent of the I.C. Division between Water Valley and Jackson; three sisters, Mrs. W. T. Winston of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. H. C. Leake of Woodville and Miss Ruby Caulfield of Columbus, MS. (Caulfield or Caufield) Feb. 21, 1930; Sec.1, p.4, col.6;Will Norman one of Hammond's best know negroes died at his residence Thursday morning. He has been a resident for 28 years. He is survived by his wife and five children. Feb. 21, 1930; Sec. 2, p.4, col.2; William F. Hegg of Shabonna, Illinois died here Sunday while visiting his sister Mrs. Cora H. Nau. He was 63 years of age. Body was sent home for burial. Feb. 21, 1930; Sec. 3, p.4; Mrs. Susie B. Lee,70, died Monday evening of pneumonia. She lived in the 6th Ward of St. Helena parish. She was the daughter of William Bridges and Pauline Travis of St. Helena parish. Interment was in the Travis cemetery in St. Helena parish. Survivors include a son,Thomas Lee; two sisters, Mrs. B. Conley and Pauline Spears of Osyka,MS; two brothers, W.B. Bridges of Tangipahoa and Jack Bridges of St. Helena. Feb. 21, 1930. Sec. 3, p.4, col.5; (Independence, LA Feb. 17) The funeral of Miss Josephine Dileo, 23, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Dileo was held at Mater Dolorosa church with burial at the Catholic cemetery. Feb. 21, 1930; Sec.3, p.4, col.5; (Ponchatoula, LA Feb. 15) Albee Hoffman, 27, son of Paul Hoffman was killed at noon Friday when a log fell from a truck near Woodville, MS. Services were at Hammond Saturday. He is survived by his widow, Lucille Steidtmann of Ponchatoula and his father. Feb. 28, 1930; Sec. 1, p.2, col.3; Mrs. M.R. Bylsmo of Hammond died at the Baptist Hospital in New Orleans Feb. 23, 1930. The funeral was held at her home Monday. Interment was at Greenlawn cemetery, Hammond. Survivors include her husband, Peter Bylsmo; two daughters, Mrs. Colen Draper of Detroit, and Miss Margaret Bylsma of Hammond; a son Myles Bylsma and several grandchildren-- one of these being Miss Dolly Bylsmo a 1929 graduate of Hammond High School. Feb. 28, 1930; Sec.1, p.2, col.7;(Amite, LA Feb.27) Edgar Jager, 76, died at the residence of Joseph Illy. He was born in New Orleans and has been a resident for 59 years. Services were held at St. Helena Catholic Church and interment in Amite cemetery. He is survived by a brother, Pete Jager of Washington, Indiana. Feb. 28,1930;Sec.2,p.2,col.4; (Independence,LA-Feb.25) Mrs. H.W. Phillips, 97, probably the oldest resident of the community died last night at the home of B.B. Hayden near Independence. Born in New Orleans, she has lived here many years making her home with relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Warren LeBaron. Body will be taken to New Orleans for services tomorrow. March 7, 1930; Sec.1, p.3, col.1; Rene Calmes died March 2 at his home near Robert. Survivors are his daughters Mrs. J. H. Durbin, Mrs. W.W. Painting, Mrs. F.J. Everhardt of Independence, Mrs. L.S. Richardson of Shreveport, Mrs. Austin Hunt of Texas, Miss Louise Calmes of New Orleans, Mrs Byron; his sons Elmo Calmes of Elizabeth, Lawrence and Roy Calmes of Independence, Bennett and Ellen Calmes of Robert, Thomas Calmes of Loranger, Floyd Calmes of Thibodeaux, David, Charles, and Andrew Calmes of Robert; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Cason of Independence, Mrs. F. C. Cason of Valley Park, MS, Mrs. Florence Bankston of Tickfaw and Mrs. Theresa Johnson of Hammond and a large number of nieces and nephews. He was born 68 years ago and had been married three times: First to Miss Mattie Dunnington, second to Miss Ida Stevens, and third to Miss Mary Greene--all preceded him in death. Mary died Oct.11, 1928. Interment was at Mt. Stevens cemetery. (See March 21, 1930;Sec.2, p.3, Loranger) March 7, 1930;Sec.1, p.3, col.5; Miss Rachel Miller, 80, died Friday,February 28. After services at the home the remains were taken to New Orleans, her former home, for burial. Miss Miller had for many years been a member of the W. H. Carter family. March 14, 1930; Sec.2, p.3, col.5; Eugene Eastley died March 5, 1930 at Kentwood. March 21, 1930; Sec. 1, p.1, col.7; Henry W. Raiford of Harvey, died Monday, March 17, 1930. He was born in Tangipahoa parish and had been a resident of Harvey for 38 years. A brother J. B. Raiford died last November. His wife was the former Ernestine Carmadelia. He is the father of three sons, Henry, Ernest, and Albert Raiford. Services were Tuesday afternoon and burial was at the McDonoghville Cemetery , McDonoghville,LA. March 21, 1930; Sec.2, p.3. (Loragner News) News was recieved Monday of the death of Mrs. Bennett daughter of the late Rene Calmes. She leaves a family of little folks and her husband. (See March 7, 1930, Sec.1, p.3, col.1) March 28, 1930; Sec.1, p.1, col.4; Daughter of Mr. J.Q. Hinson, school bus driver, was accidently killed by his brother. The brother was borrowing a pump gun and was in the act of unloading it when it discharged killing his niece as she was sleeping on a ner-by bed. Services were conducted at the Beulah Baptist Church Wednesday with burial in the cemetery near the church. April 4, 1930; Sec.1,p.1,col.4; Shirley Lee, 17 months, child of Mrs. Lee, widow, was killed in a fall from a window. She was buried Monday in Greenlawn cemetery, Hammond. April 4, 1930; Sec. 3, p.4, col.3; (Amite,La,March 30) M. Sharber, 40, was found dead in bed early Sat. A.M. He has been a resident for a number of years, having previously lived in MS. He is survived by a wife and child. Interment was in Laurel, MS Sunday. April 11, 1930; Sec.1, p.1, col.4; Six month old baby of Mr. and Mrs. Collins Stubbs of Sellars, LA died last Sunday in Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Interment was Monday in Greenlawn cemetery at Hammond. April 18, 1930; Sec.1, p.1,col.4; Mr. J. L. Branch died as the result of an auto accident in Starks, Florida. April 18, Sec.1, p.1, col.2; (Ponchatoula, April 13) Joseph Berner, farmer died yesterday at the age of 72. Survivors are his wife, Mamie Mender of New Orleans, a daughter Mrs. Sophie Smith of New Orleans and sons, John Berner and Emile Berner of Ponchatoula, and Anthony Berner of New Orleans; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Fritz and Mrs. Lena Hummell and a brother, Emile Berner of New Orleans. Funeral services were yesterday (April 12) at the home with burial in the Catholic cemetery. April 25, 1930;Sec.3, p.3, col.3; (Independence,April 21) Word was recieved here of the death of Warren R. Stevens, 19,in an auto accident. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Stevens of Independence and a grandson of Warren Stevens, one of the first settlers of Independence. Funeral will be here Wednesday and burial in Stevens cemetery. April 25,1930; Sec. 1, p.1, col.4; A. J. Alford of Amite died Tuesday. He is a former state senator. He was married two times. Survivors are his widow, 2 sons and 3 daughters: Leo Otto Alford, (U.S. Navy), Burnham Alford of Seigle Mountain, TN, Mrs. Minnie Starns of Baton Rough, Mrs. Cora Saal of Amite, Mrs. J.F. Vernon of Brookhaven, MS and Miss Bobbie Alford of Jackson, MS. Services were Wednesday at the Laurel Street Baptist Church and interment at Amite Cemetery. April 25, 1930; Sec.1, p.1, col.2; Former resident, Jack Bunce, was killed in a fall in Chicago Thursday. He lived in Chicago about 10 years. His wife was Miss Mae Norman a sister of the Messrs. Charles, George, Leon, Joe, Louis,and Henry Norman and Mrs. Fred Meyers. His wife and two children survive. April 25, 1930; (classified section, 3rd col.) In Memoriam: In loving remembrance of Mrs. Virginia Varisco Spitare--died Jan. 14, 1929 by Cecilia Graziano. (relationship not given) May 2, 1930; Sec. 1. p.1, col.1; Edward Newman, 6, youngest son of Dr, and Mrs. A.J. Newman died in a Baton Rough Hospital Sat, April 26 of pneumonia. Services were Sunday in Hammond and burial in Amite City cemetery. May 2, 1930; Sec. 1, p.2, col.2;(Tangipahoa, May 1) Mr. Cade Drew Strickland, native son of St. Helena parish, former resident of Tangipahoa, former mayor of Kentwood, and a prominent church worker in the city of Baton Rouge died at the Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rough Tuesday morning. (See May 9; Sec.3, p.1) May 2, 1930; Sec. 2, p.3,col.3; (News from Over Tangipahoa Parish) J. H. Womack, 79,of Kentwood died Friday, April 25 at the home of his daughter in New Orleans. He served as sheriff of St. Helena for 16 years, postmaster ten years at Kentwood. He was born in St. Helens parish, son of George Womach and Elizabeth Amacher, pioneers of St. Helena parish. He married Miss Olivia Sheppard of New Orleans and to this union 8 children were born. He married second Miss Viola Robertson of Kentwood who survies. Other survivors include 3 daughters, Mrs. W.L. Hughes of New Orleans, Mrs. George Kent of Havana, Cuba, Mrs. Otto Schwartz of Kentwood; 1 son T. G. Womach of Kentwood; 1 brother George Womach of Kentwood and many other relatives. Services were conducted at his late residence in Kentwood and interment at Greensburg cemetery Saturday. May 9, 1930: P.1;(Tangipahoa news) Mr. and Mrs. Alex Stewart of Peoria, MS, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Brabham and children of Magnolia, MS, Mr. C, T, Smith and son Sitman of Kentwood, Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Smith of Roseland attended the funeral of their uncle Cade Strickland at the Taylor family cemetery Wednesday. (See May 2,1930, Sec.1, p.2, col.2) May 9, 1930; Sec. ? page 3; col.1; Alex Fazekas, 68, of Albany died Saturday and was buried at Albany Sunday. He is the brother of dan Fazekas, Hammond merchant-tailor. He was a native of Hungary. 16 May 1930; p. 1, col. 1: Mary Florence Gray, age 5 years and 7 months, died Sunday. Survived by parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Gray; one sister; one brother. 16 May 1930; p. 1, col. 4: John O. Corbin, 64, pioneer Hammond citizen, died Monday. Homesteaded three miles west of Hammond; member of Grace Episcopal Church. Funeral Tuesday; interment in Grace Cemetery, adjacent to church. Survived by widow; daughter, Miss Mary; two sons, John and Bob. [Later issue corrected the survivors as widow and two sons - No daughter, Mary.] 16 May 1930; p. 1, col. 3: Polite Bahm, Loranger farmer, killed near Independence in an auto accident, Saturday. Attending funeral: sisters, Mrs. Eaton of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Rache and Mrs. Odom of Port Arthur, TX; brother, Robert and brother-in-law, Mr. Rankin, of Baton Rouge. A younger sister and brother were not able to attend. 23 May 1930; p. 1: Leon "Bud" Ford, 55, IC RR engineer, resident of Hammond; Harry Watts, IC RR fireman, negro; and Jack Packwood Wall, Jr., 14, of Tangipahoa were killed Sunday when the engine, tender and four cars were ditched after crashing into a car driven by young Wall, which had stalled at the crossing. Jay Wall died Sunday night at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. Son of J. P. Wall, Sr. and Mrs. Wall, daughter of Mrs. Addison Riggs of New Orleans. Jay was only child. Miss Ella Wall, aunt of the boy, is a nurse at Touro Infirmary. Other relatives in New Orleans include another aunt, Miss Emma Wall, also a nurse; another aunt, Miss Eleanor Riggs is principal of Sophie Wright High School; an uncle, Walter F. Riggs. Engineer Ford, lived in Hammond; came from McComb; married Miss Ella Harrell; worked for the railroad from age 19. Leon Ford funeral Monday in Hammond; interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. Survived by wife, two daughters, Mrs. Nelson Penton and Miss Carmalete Ford; son, Leon Ford, Jr. a Hammond attorney; a brother, Victor Ford of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Mrs. F. B. Varnado of McComb, MS and Mrs. R. J. Wilson of Houston. Fireman Watts leaves a wife and several children. 23 May 1930; p. 1, col. 7: Deaths: Cornelia Naretto, born 16 July 1852 in Tangipahoa parish; married in 1872 to Frank Bailey. Leaves four children, John F. Bailey of Onville, LA, Morgan G. Bailey of Robert, Mrs. A. O. Joiner and Mrs. Clarissa Rogers of Amite; seven grandchildren; one brother and four sisters. Lived in Hammond past 25 years; buried in Narretto Cemetery, 18 May 1930. John Butler, 73, died Monday; funeral Tuesday; interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. Mrs. Pendarvis, mother of Joe and Tat, died in Houston, TX, Tuesday. Former resident of Tangipahoa parish. Mr. N. L. Davis, of Ponchatoula, died Friday. Mrs. Duncan F. Young, the former Zilla M.
