Funeral at African Baptist Church in Tangipahoa; interment at Tangipahoa. 6 Jan 1933; p. 9, col. 5: Warren Gill, 45, of the Spring Creek community, died Sunday in New Orleans. Son of Richard Gill and Mary Sterling. Funeral was Monday; interment in Gill Cemetery, near Spring Creek. Survived by wife, Mrs. Lillian Gill and one son. 13 Jan 1933; p. 1, col. 5: Jesse E. Mixon, 46, died at home, 7 miles southeast of Amite. Son of the late Jesse S. Mixon. Funeral was Jan 10th at the home; interment in Union Church graveyard. Survived by widow; two sons, Glenn and Aubrey; a daughter, Murrell; five brothers, C. M. Mixon, Mayor Alonzo Mixon of Amite, Thomas M. Mixon of Baton Rouge; three sisters, Mrs. Luke Elliott of Amite, Mrs. Earnest Russell of Roseland, and Miss Aurelia Mixon of Amite. 13 Jan 1933; p. 6, col. 3: Guy Carney Kemp, 82, died at Amite, Jan 10th. A native of St. Helena parish, and the last of five brothers and sisters born on the old Kemp homestead established over 150 years ago. His grandfather, John Mason Kemp, settled there after service in the Revolutionary War. Guy lived in Amite for many years. He was a brother of the late Hillery J. Kemp, Judge W. B. Kemp, Dr. John Kemp and former Mayor Thomas Kemp of Amite. Funeral was in Amite, Wednesday; interment in Amite Cemetery. Survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Congressman Bolivar E. Kemp of the 6th District, Dr. Robert Kemp of Baton Rouge and Neal Tate of St. Helena parish. 20 Jan 1933; p. 1, col. 7: Mrs. Elizabeth M. Carr, 81, died at home in Hammond, Saturday. She was the former Miss Nellie Bourg of Houma, LA. Members of family attending the funeral from Houma, LA were: Judge Chas. Bourg, a brother; Mrs. F. X. Bourg, wife of Sheriff F. X. Bourg, also a brother who was unable to attend; accompanying Mrs. Bourg were two daughters and one son, Miss Bessie, Miss Gladys and Mr. Floyd Bourg. Mr. Louby Bourg, another brother, and his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Percy of New Orleans. The brother of Dr. Delcourt, Hadelin C., arrived from Houston, TX. A sister, Mrs. J. J. Funeral Monday; interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. A native of Bay City, Mich.; married Mr. Leslie in 1913. Survived by husband; two children, Lola Florence, 13, and Louise, 7; five sisters and two brothers. 17 Feb 1933; p. 2, col. 2: John Clark McCracken, 62, died at home in Hammond, Thursday. Funeral Thursday in Hammond; interment in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans. He was a widower. Survived by five children, Mrs. Edwin Buehler of New Orleans, John Clark, Jr. now in the navy, Miss Eva Hennen McCracken and Charles McCracken of Hammond, James McCracken. He belonged to an old New Orleans family, well known in the furniture business; lived in Hammond the past 25 years. Son of the late James McCracken and Susan M. Waterman. His father was a native of Nova Scotia, his mother a native of New Orleans. Gordon Anderson, 50, the Night Marshal in Hammond, was killed by gunshots while on duty Monday. A native of Woodville, Miss. Survived by widow; four children, J. C. Anderson, Vic Anderson, Dermott Anderson and Miss Mary Gordon Anderson; two brothers, Dr. S. S. Anderson of Hammond and C. R. Anderson of Hammond. Funeral Tuesday; interment in family cemetery in Centerville, Miss. 2 June 1933; p. 1, col. 6: Ray Devell Magruder, 44, attorney and resident of Amite, died at home Thursday, 1 June. Born 6 Nov 1888 in Coshocton County, Ohio, the only child of a well known family; attended Wesleyan University at Delaware, Ohio; came to Amite in 1908. Funeral Friday, interment in Amite Cemetery. Leaves a widow by a 2nd marriage; one son by 1st marriage; and three children by his latter marriage. 2 June 1933; p. 1, col. 3: Mrs. Lawrence Bollin, 30, of Hammond, died Sunday. The former Betty Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Thomas; graduated from Hammond High School in 1920. Funeral Monday; interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. Guy Lipscomb, 30, of near Denham Springs, was buried 29 May in Amite Baptist Church Cemetery, following services there. The former Miss Melba Tycer was born in Livingston parish; daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Tycer of Holden, and the niece of Judge N. B. Tycer. Survived by husband; parents; an infant daughter; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Starns; three brothers, R. M. Tycer of Denham Springs, Henry Tycer and Foster Tycer of Holden; grandfather, R. M. Tycer of Hammond. 23 June 1933; p. 1, col. 1: Bolivar Edwards Kemp, 61, died at home in Amite, Monday. He was the Congressman representing Louisiana's 6th District. His brother, W. B. Kemp, died on May 25th. Born 28 Dec 1871 in St. Helena parish on the old Kemp homestead settled by his great, grandfather, Jonathan Kemp in 1804. He was the son of Judge William Breed Kemp and Elizabeth Newsom Kemp. He graduated from Tulane University, School of Law, in 1897; admitted to the bar 1897, and practiced law in Amite with his father and brother, the late Duncan Stuart Kemp. He became a congressman in Washington, D.C. on 4 March 1925; his first and only political office. He served four terms. Funeral was Tuesday, June 20th; interment in Amite Cem. 30 June 1933; p. 3, col. 4: Louis P. Starns died last week near Austin, TX. Funeral was held in Amite, Sunday, June 25th.; interment in Amite Cemetery. Survived by widow; mother, Mrs. J. P. Starns; four sisters, Mrs. S. D. Almand and Mrs. S. B. Hyde of Hammond, Mrs. J. W. B. of Independence and Hinton of Houston, TX. 28 July 1933; p. 1, col. 1: Thurston Smith, 21, of Amite died at Natalbany. He was electrocuted in a work related accident. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith, and grandson of Mrs. Maggie Ricks of Amite. 4 Aug 1933; p. 1, col. 7: Fred O. Durbin, 41, died Tuesday, Aug 1st at home in Killian. A native of Independence. Funeral was at Independence, Thursday; interment in Amite Cemetery. Preceded in death by his wife. 11 Aug 1933; p. 1, col. 6: Hamilton Everette Rohner, 34, of Amite, died Wednesday, August 9th in a New Orleans hospital. Survived by his wife, the former Miss Carroll Casanova. Funeral in Amite, Thursday; interment in Amite Cemetery. 18 Aug 1933; p. 2, col. 1: Charles Watkins, 59, died Wednesday at home at Kohnke's Hill, west of Hammond. A native of SC; lived a while in New Orleans; lived in Hammond the past 25 years. He married Mrs. Alice Bercaw. Survived by wife; step-son, Gary Bercaw and an adopted daughter, Clovis Watkins. Funeral Thursday; interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. 18 Aug 1933; p. 3, col. 6: Mr. L. A. Jenkins died in Folsom, Wednesday. A former resident of Ponchatoula; moved to Folosom a year or more ago. Survived by widow; four sons, Bailey, Ora of Ponchatoula, Edward and Sherwood Jenkins; one daughter, Alma Jenkins. Funeral and interment Thursday at Folsom. 25 Aug 1933; p. 1, col. 4: Brittain B. Purser, 59, of Amite, died in a New Orleans hospital Wednesday. He was a prominent attorney of Tangipahoa parish for more than 30 years. Born 12 Mar 1874 in Hazelhurst, MS; the son of Rev. D. I. Purser. He was the nephew of Rev. John F. Purser. Educated at Miss. College at Clinton, MS and Howard College at Birmingham, AL; studied law at Tulane Univ.; married Miss Ethel Hungate of White Pine, TN in 1904, she survives. The following children survive: John T., Paul, Miss Mary and Miss Elizabeth. One son, Brittain H., died in an aviation accident last November. Funeral Thursday, Aug 24th in Amite. 25 Aug 1933; p. 5, col. 5: Mrs. M. N. Samaha, 48, died Sunday in a New Orleans hospital. The former Miss Wardy Mansour of Donaldsonville. Resident of Hammond the past 2 years. Survived by husband and eight children. Four children were with her when she died: Miss Edna, Mr. Bob, Mr. Ellis and Mr. Roger Samaha. Albee, 72, and his granddaughter, Pauline Hoffman, past 13, died in Hammond Saturday in an apparent murder-suicide. Mr. Albee apparently shot his granddaughter then took his own life. Pauline was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman was twice married. His first wife was Pauline's mother, who died when Pauline was 9 years old. Mrs. Albee, the grandmother, died 1 Oct 1934. Both funerals held Sunday in Hammond. Pauline was interred in Wetmore Cemetery in Ponchatoula.
