Civic Leader Dies Funeral Services Held Thursday Morning for Prominent Merchant Jacob R. Abels, Retired Business Man, Dies at His Home Here Tuesday. Jacob Richard Abels, son of the late Dedric and Catherine Schwartz Abels of Belheim, Germany, died at his home in Ponchatoula, following a two-week illness which began on Tuesday, March 9, when he suffered a stroke as he sat reading his morning paper. Since the stroke, Mr. Abels grew steadily weaker until the end came Tuesday evening at 6:53, bringing sorrow to his family and a multitude of friends throughout the state. "Uncle Jake" as he was called by all who knew him well, was born December 21, 1858, on a farm five miles west of Ponchatoula where he lived with his parents until reaching manhood. For a time he engaged in farming. On July 17, 1882, he married Miss Elizabeth Drude, a native of New Orleans. Five years later the couple moved into Ponchatoula and Mr. Abels opened a general merchandise store in which he met with a good measure of success. He invested his earnings in much real estate in and around Ponchatoula. For a time he left the mercantile business, but reentered it and continued in that line of business until 1920 when he sold out to his nephew Henry J. Lavigne, and retired from active business, devoting most of his time to real estate. While in the mercantile business, Mr. Abels helped to organize the Merchants & Farmers Bank & Trust company and served as its president for several years. In 1911 he also assisted in the organization of the Ponchatoula Homestead association and had held the offce (sic) of first vice-president of the association since it was organized. Beginning about the year 1893, Mr. Abels served as mayor of Ponchatoula for one or two terms and had been chairman of the board of stewards for the Methodist church for many years. "Uncle Jake" was a great lover of flowers, the japonica being one of his favorites, and a day never passed that he did not have a japonica pinned on his coat or shirt while they were in bloom. On Easter Sunday it was his custom to bring japonicas to Ponchatoula by the bushel and give them to his friends. During his later years, "Uncle Jake" had given much to charity, though it was done quiety (sic), records in his books show sums totaling hundreds of dollars given. He was active in the affairs of the Methodist church and was an earnest worker for the good of the community. He also served as secretary of the Anti- Saloon league of Louisiana. He spent his summers in Biloxi, Miss., taking an active part in the affairs of the Sea Shore camp grounds where he maintained a camp. Prior to his stroke Mr. Abels appeared to be in excellent health. Although 78 years of age he was very active and the day before he suffered the stroke he assisted in the sawing of some oak blocks being cut from a tree which had been felled a few days before and he had also climbed to the roof of one of his business buildings to make note of needed repairs. Having apparently been in good health his death came as a great shock to his family and legion of friends who deeply mourn his passing. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 10:30 o clock, the Rev. A. T. Law, assisted by the Rev. J. Henry Bowdon, presiding elder of the Baton Rouge district, conducting the services. Interment was in the Ponchatoula cemetery. As a mark of respect and esteem the business houses of Ponchatoula were closed Thursday morning during the hour of service by a proclamation issued by Mayor W. R. Haight to that effect. Pallbearers were E. P. Kinchen, Sr., Joseph Perrin, W. H. Richardson, E. W. Vinyard, Moses Vinyard, C. W. Lavigne, A. L. Colmer and G. L. Wilcombe. Mr. Abels is survived by his widow and one sister, Mrs. John E. Lavigne of Ponchatoula, and a number of nieces and nephews. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 6/18/2004 ABELS, KATHY JEAN Died at 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at her residence near Holden.
