Allen entered peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with his family at his side at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, March 11, 2007. He was 74 and a resident of Ponchatoula since 1968. He was born Nov. 4, 1932, in Hammond, and grew up in Manchac. Dr. Allen lived a life devoted to God, his family and to the health of his community. Graduating from Ponchatoula High School in 1951, he enrolled in Loyola School of Pharmacy in New Orleans and graduated in 1956. His passion for helping others fueled his desire to enter LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, completing his medical doctorate in 1964. Upon completing medical school, he entered the U.S. Army with the rank of captain and served in the Fourth Army in 1965. He was the recipient of numerous commendations. In 1968, Dr. Allen moved to Ponchatoula to begin his lifelong career providing health care to the community. During his 43 years of medical practice, he fought for patient rights. He assisted on the Louisiana Formulary Committee to ensure that those who could not afford prescription medication could receive them at little or no cost. Dr. Allen spoke on numerous occasions in Washington, D.C., for patient and physician advocacy. He was instrumental in the creation of a bill mandating that CPR be taught in every high school in the state. He enriched the lives of his children, Glenn, Greg, Steven, Lisa, Merlinda and Merlin Jr. through his devotion to God along with his loving wife, Lee Allen. Dr. Allen was a member of First Baptist Church in Ponchatoula and American Legion Post 47. He also served as chief of staff at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond, recently retiring with 38 years of dedicated service. He was head of the family practice department at North Oaks, head of the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians, served as a delegate to the AMA, was president of the Tangipahoa Parish Medical Society and was a recipient of the Louisiana Family Physician of the Year Award in 1987 and the Congressional Medal of Distinction. Dr. Allen established and implemented the Advanced Cardiac Life Support Program as it is practiced today. Preceded in death by his parents, James Frank and Mary Rose Allen; and brothers, Robert and Raymond Allen. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lee; six children, 12 grandchildren, three brothers and a sister. Dr. Merlin Allen lived his life saying to all that "as doctors we cannot heal.
