She obtained a degree in health and physical education from Louisiana Normal College, now Northwestern State University, in 1938 and began a teaching career at age 19 in Egan. She later taught science and American history in Iota and physical education in Vivian. She attended graduate school at LSU in Baton Rouge. In 1946, she married Preston Byram Allison, of Ida. They resided in Houston and Baton Rouge and moved in 1954 to Hammond, where she was a homemaker and substitute teacher. Mrs. Allison taught modern dance and body mechanics at Southeastern Louisiana College from 1962 through 1968. She was active in Les Mesdames at SLU and taught children's Sunday school for many years at First Baptist Church and Immanuel Baptist Church in Hammond, where she and her husband were charter members. From 1974 to 1980, they lived in Little Rock, Ark., and Memphis while he taught at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, then returned to their beloved home in Hammond. She was preceded in death by her husband, and daughter, Melanie Kay Allison, who also were teachers. Mrs. Allison is survived by her son, Kevin Richard Allison; daughter-in-law, Janet Munster Allison; and grandchildren, Luke Preston Allison and Lucy Elaine Allison. She is also survived by her brother, Dale Bernard, of Lake Charles. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and a sister. Melba was the salt of the earth and stored up her treasures in heaven. Funeral services will be conducted at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hammond at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, with visitation at the church from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. PRESTON BYRAM Dr. Allison died at age 90 on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004. A resident of Hammond, he was born in Ida in 1914 to John Richard Preston Allison and Ora Byram Allison. He was a devoted Christian, a dedicated teacher and an accomplished baseball player who loved the game throughout his life. He received a bachelor of arts diploma from Centenary College as well as master of education and doctor of philosophy degrees from LSU. He also completed additional graduate work at the University of Arkansas, Colorado State University and LSU. In 1946, he married Melba Bernard of Iota. Dr. Allison began teaching at Vivian High School in 1934. He later served as principal of Hosston High School and taught at Louisiana State University High School. He became assistant professor of education at Southeastern Louisiana University in 1954, and associate professor of education in 1955. >From 1954 to 1962, he served as principal of Southeastern Louisiana University High School. He was named head of the department of education of Southeastern Louisiana University in 1961, and worked in that position until 1966. From 1963 until 1970, he was dean of the School of Education. During his years in administration, Dr. Allison also served as a professor of education. He retired from public education in 1974 to join the faculty of Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary as professor of education. Dr. Allison formed and headed the division of religious education of the seminary and was instrumental in the seminary's efforts toward accreditation, and also served as registrar from 1976 until his retirement in 1980. Dr. Allison served in the U.S. Army from 1941 until 1946, when he was discharged with the rank of captain. For many years Dr. Allison was a member of the Hammond Rotary Club, and he served as the president in 1959-60. He was a member emeritus of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Kappa and held a life membership in the National Education Association. He also was a member of Kappa Delta Pi. Dr. Allison is listed in "Who's Who in America," "Outstanding Educators of America," "Dictionary of International Biography," "Who's Who in the United States," "Who's Who in the World" and "Leaders in Education." He published a number of articles in "The Boardman" and "Louisiana Schools." Dr. Allison was an ordained deacon and taught adult Sunday school classes in Baptist churches for many years. He also served as director of Sunday school. He was a charter member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Hammond. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melanie Kay Allison, also a teacher. Dr. Allison is survived by his wife; a son, Kevin Richard Allison and daughter-in-law, Janet Munster Allison; grandchildren, Luke Preston and Lucy Elain Allison, all of Colorado; three brothers, Dr. J. Philip Allison and Dr. B. Gray Allison of Memphis, and James E. Allison of Ida; and a sister, Dr. Betty Sue McNeese of Shreveport. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Jimmie Lawton, who was of Bossier City, Ruth Foster, who was of Baton Rouge, and Riva Hall, who was of Cranston, R.I.; and a brother, R. Alan Allison, who was of Ida. Visitation at Immanuel Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 30. Funeral service at the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
