He was a native of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, the owner of Alvarez Nursery in Manalapan and Millstone Township, a member of the Nuserymen's Association and the Monmouth County Shade Tree Commission, a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Delia; a son, Victor of Natalbany; a daughter, Milagros "Molly" Bendick of Millstone; two stepdaughters, Delia and Claudia Herrara; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Milagros. She was married to her loving husband, Vic, for 39 years and was a selfless person who loved unconditionally. Mary was meek and humble with a heart of gold and loved spending time with her grandchildren, Zain and Jennica, more than anything. Some of her other favorite activities included, taking countless photographs, traveling, and spending time with her family and her dog, Posha. She was angel on earth and now is looking down upon us from heaven. She will be greatly missed by all. Mary leaves behind her husband, Victor M. Alvarez; mother, Anna Sciortino; daughter, Sonia Alvarez; son, Victor A. Alvarez and wife Heather, along with her grandchildren, Zain and Jennica Alvarez. She is also survived by her sister, Judy Evans; brothers, Gasper "Butch" Sciortino, Peter Sciortino and Tommy Sciortino, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Sciortino. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, west of Hammond, on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., with a prayer vigil and recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. The visitation will resume at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, from 9 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Fr.
