She was the eldest of four children. The family moved to Baton Rouge when Evelyn was 16 years old. She enrolled in the 11th grade at Istrouma High School. Because she was the only student who could type, she typed the first Istrouma yearbook called the Powwow. While at Istrouma, her nickname was Smiley", because she was always wearing her beautiful smile, the same smile she was wearing the day the Lord called her home. Evelyn and her husband, John, owned several businesses throughout their lives. They were Andrews Six Mile Store, Hooper Road Hardware, Andrews Trucking, and lastly, Central Florist, which was so dear to her heart. She always loved to be of service to her many customers in the Central area. At least five of her former employees went on to open their own shops and spread the beauty she had taught them. While her children were in elementary and high school, she was always available to be homeroom mother, active in the PTA, and fundraising projects "Oh, those chicken and spaghetti dinners, what fun." She was an inspiration to all who knew her, especially the residents of Whealdon Estates. Her love was shared by those who survive her. She was born in Graniteville, Vermont. She became a registered nurse in her 20's and helped found a hospital in Vermont. During WWII, she served with the U.S. Public Health Service in Panama, U.S. Canal Zone, where she met and married Dr. John D. Andrews, who preceded her in death. She also worked in several area hospitals, including Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She is survived by four children: Carl W. Andrews, Charles S. Andrews, Cynthia D. Andrews, and John D. Andrews; six grandchildren: Carl J. Andrews, Charleen E. Andrews, Christine E. Andrews, Breton E. Andrews, Jodie L. Andrews, and Joseph R. Nika; and three great-grandchildren: Meaghan E. Andrews, Ayla E. Romero, and Kera S. Romero. Her granddaughter, Christine M. Keith, preceded her in death. Funeral arrangements are by Harry McKneely and Son, 2000 N.
