She grew up in Havana, Cuba and New Orleans, Louisiana. She and her husband Walter came to Hammond as a young couple, after World War II. Though Walter died two years before Mary, they lived and worked together for almost 60 years in the business they established, Antin-Quealy, Hammond's first store for fine jewelry and gifts. Mary will be remembered by her friends, customers and community for her gentle presence and civic contributions. She served on the founding board of 7th Ward General Hospital, now North Oaks Health System, and was an avid golfer and a cancer survivor of many years. She was also a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Mary is survived by her sister Mary Margaret Quealy Watson and brother-in-law James A. Watson (Fredericksburg, TX); by her children Mary Quealy Antin (Houston, TX) and Noemi Yanes and Walter (Bud) Antin, Jr. (Hammond); by five grandchildren, David Aaron Lewis (Washington, DC) and Robert Carolan Quealy Lewis (Corpus Christi, TX); Emma Elizabeth Antin and Joseph Daschbach (New York, NY); Leah Claire Antin (Philadelphia, PA); and Walter Antin, III (Shanghai, China); by one great grandchild Henry Bay Daschbach (New York, NY); and by her sister-in-law Elizabeth (Betty) Quealy (Amelia Island, FL) and her children. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Walter of 64 years (October 24, 2005), her parents Mary Elizabeth (Bessie) Harrison and William I. Quealy, and her brother William H. Quealy. The Antin family would like to sincerely thank Mary's loving companions for their care, Gerry Turner and Doddy Nicholls, and also her concerned health providers, Dr. Johnny Walker and the staff and hospice of North Oaks Medical Center. A service will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Rose Memorial Gardens. He was born April 22, 1918, in New Orleans, the son of the late Samuel and Leah Claire Pulitzer Antin. Mr. Antin was the former owner of Antin's Jewelers in Hammond for 40 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps major, having served in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mary Quealy Antin; son, Walter Antin Jr. of Hammond; daughter, Quealy Antin of Houston; granddaughters, Emma "Bessie" Antin Daschbach and Leah Claire Antin; and three grandsons, Walter Antin III, David Aarron Lewis and Robert Carolan Quealy Lewis. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Antin Chambers and Clara Lee Aronson. Friends will be received Thursday, Oct. 27, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Hammond, from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. Bob Perry. Interment in Rose Memorial Park Cemetery, Hammond.
