"COACH TOMMY" A plant operator with Orion Refinery and a resident of Ponchatoula, he died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in Ponchatoula. He was 43 and a native of New Roads. Visiting at Seale Funeral Home, Livingston, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday and after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Religious services at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Wes Courtney. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory, Baton Rouge. Survived his children, Thomas Roy "Trey" Avant III, Stephanie Lee Avant and Rory Joseph Avant; former wife, Teri Avant; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Frank Wicker; nieces, Melisa Johnson, Madonna Maxey and Leslie Carpenter; and a nephew, Nicholas Broussard. Preceded in death by parents, Thomas Roy Avant Sr. and Olean Avant; and grandparents. Pallbearers will be Chris Broussard, Kevin Buuck, Justin Holder, Larry Hedgecoth, Mario Rodriguez and Ronnie Farace. Honorary pallbearer is Henry Ognibene Sr. He was a member of Glen Oaks Baptist Church. He was very respected and a much-loved baseball coach for Livingston Parks and Recreation Department for many years. She was a native of Folsom and resident of Velma. She is survived by her husband, Smith Avant Jr.; sons, Chalmes Brown and Darrell Avant; daughters, Betty Andrews, Peggy Daniels, Joann Sheppard, Christy Phillips, Cynthia Head and Sheila Avant; sisters, Emma Halton, Grace Myles and Irma Ferguson; brothers, Arthur Clark Jr. and Donald Clark; and 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in by her parents, Arthur and Mittie Clark; her son, Rodney Brown; two brothers, Ernest Clark and Myrthis Clark; four sisters, Aldine Thomas, Lucy Clark and Rose Lundy and Yvonne Clark. Visitation will be Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at Bickham AME Zion Church, Velma, until the funeral conducted by the Rev. Earnest Peters Sr. at 7 p.m. Dismissal will be Monday and burial will follow in Hay Hollow Cemetery, Folsom.
