Mervin T. Avants,Sr., 90, went peacefully home to be with the Lord August 8, 2009. He was born January 27, 1919 in Smithdale, Mississippi, to Thomas Edgar and Lovie Louella Avants and was raised in Harahan, Louisiana. He was a US Army veteran of World War II where he served in the 45th Infantry Division from 1941 to 1945. His division was the only one in World War II to be involved in four major invasions and he survived 511 days on the front lines in Europe. He lost essentially all of his friends in combat. He was proud of being awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Bronze Star. Following his discharge he graduated from Gulf Radio School in New Orleans in 1949 and then spent most of his working life in Massachusetts. After retiring as chief engineer of a radio station there, he returned to Louisiana. For thirty years, until 2008, he lived in Hammond, Louisiana, and for the final year of his life he was a resident of Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; five brothers, and one sister. He leaves his son, Mervin T. Jr. (Gail,) of Tampa; two grandsons, Brian, of Philadelphia, and Michael (Sabrina,) of San Diego; one brother, Leo (Dorothy;) and a host of loving nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors. Funeral services will be private and he will be interred at Port Hudson National Cemetery in Zachary. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. He was 52 and a native of Independence. Visiting at Fellowship Ministries of Grace, Holden, on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by Brother Eric Hattaway. Interment in South Union Cemetery, Baywood.
