She was a retired school teacher at Our Lady of Mercy School with 31 years of service. Visiting at Hollabaugh Spindle Funeral Home, 1553 Wooddale Blvd., from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Visiting at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Zachary, from 8:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Kenny Laird. Burial in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Patsy Avery of Maurepas and Pat and Jeanne Avery of Zachary; six grandchildren, Donise Shipley and husband Gary, Amy Terrell and husband Rodney, Kami Kelly and husband Shawn, Michael Avery Jr. and wife Michelle, and Logan and Taw Avery; seven great-grandchildren, Cole and Avery Terrell, Tyler and Noelle Shipley, Walker and Garrett Kelly and Devin Avery; and a very special niece, Marian Mayeux and husband Chris. Preceded in death by her parents, Dominick and Rosa Alessi; three brothers, George J., Carlos D. and Joseph A. Alessi; and three sisters, Mary Ann McManus, Angelina Stout and Jennette Casiraghi. Pallbearers will be Gary Shipley, Rodney Terrell, Shawn Kelly, Logan Avery, Taw Avery and Michael Avery Jr. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Trinity Hospice, with special thanks to Ginger Hughes, R.N., and nurses aides, Wanda and Wilma. Mr. Rufus L. Avery, 72-years-old of Ponchatoula, died Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at his residence. He was born Tuesday, April 23, 1935 in Climax, Georgia, son of the late Eddie and Edie Mae Norris Avery. Surviving are his wife, Peggy N. Avery; and two sons & daughters-in-law, Wallace and Laurier Avery, Michael and Sonya Avery; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Delegal and Don Rebol, Eton and Trent Vicknair; eight grandchildren; and his sisters, Laverne Wilson and Roma Cumbie. He was preceded in death by his 3 brothers, Curtis, John, and Gilbert Avery; and his sister, Thelma Cook. Friends will be received Tuesday, May 22, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Ponchatoula. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Ponchatoula on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Robert "Bob" Deich officiating.
