Pending the arrival of a brother from California, funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at the Thomas Funeral Home and interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery - probably Friday. He leaves no other relatives. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 7/24/2002 BACON, MARY CHRISTINE Mary Christine "Miss Chris" Bacon, 70, and a resident of Hammond for 23 years, died Monday, July 22, 2002. She was a native of Sykesville, Md., piano teacher for more than 45 years, volunteer at North Oaks Medical Center and a deacon, choir member and chairman of the Congregational Care Committee at First Presbyterian Church, Hammond. She participated in numerous mission and outreach programs sponsored through the church, including Habitat for Humanity, building a church in Merida, Mexico, and coordinating the tape ministry for shut-ins. In the continued spirit of never ending service to all, she became the first patient in the United States to participate in new Phase 3 clinical research trial in hopes of finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. Her giving spirit and steadfast faith serve as a beacon to all. Survivors include her three sons and daughters- in-law, Norman Francis Bacon Jr. and Karen Uffman Bacon of Baton Rouge, Bruce Bennett Bacon Sr. and Cindy Cary Bacon of Keller, Texas, and Todd Roberts Bacon and Angela Brown Bacon of Atlanta. She is also survived by her six grandsons, Norman Francis Bacon III, Bruce Bennett Bacon Jr., Tyler Cary Bacon, Garrett Austin Bacon, Alexander Jordan Bacon and Conner Matthew Bacon. Her surviving sisters and brothers are Evelyn Apichella, Phoenix, Md., Dorothy Mathieson, Rockville, Md., Marilyn Workman, Baltimore, Richard Bennett, Westminster, Md., Tom Bennett, Greensboro, N.C., and Harry Bennett, Winnfield, Md. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at First Presbyterian Church, corner of West Charles and North Spruce streets, Hammond. A retired U.S. Navy lieutenant commander and a resident of Hammond, he died at 1:48 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, 1998. He was 65 and a native of Salem, N.J. Visiting at First Presbyterian Church, Hammond, 10 a.m. Thursday until memorial services at 11 a.m. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Christine Bennett Bacon; three sons and daughters-in-law, Norman Francis Bacon Jr. and Karen Uffman Bacon, Baton Rouge, Bruce Bennett Bacon Sr. and Cindy Cary Bacon, Fort Worth, Texas, and Todd Roberts Bacon and Angela Brown Bacon, Atlanta. He leaves behind five grandsons, Norman Francis Bacon III and Garrett Austin Bacon, both of Baton Rouge, Bruce Bennett Bacon Jr. and Tyler Cary Bacon, both of Fort Worth, and Alexander Jordan Bacon, Atlanta; and four sisters, Elizabeth Bacon Kiltie, Raleigh, N.C., Florence Bacon Morgan, Martha Bacon Rogers and Eleanor Bacon Black, all of Pennsville, N.J. He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester Comer Bacon and Martha Uhland; and two brothers, Chester Uhland Bacon and John Louis Bacon. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America and a recipient of the Silver Bear Award through the Istrouma Area Council. He was a volunteer with North Oaks Hospice and North Oaks Hospital, a member of the board of directors of Hammond Area Habitat for Humanity, president of the board of directors of Westminster Gardens, elder of First Presbyterian Church of Hammond, and a member of Toastmasters and Rotary Club of Ponchatoula. He was named North Oaks Medical Center Volunteer of the Year in 1993 and was recipient of their 1993 Golden Deeds Award.
