He was 72 and lived for many years in Hammond, where he and his first wife owned a school supply store. He was born to Lester V. Baird and Etah Perry Baird on Aug. 7, 1934, in Pelahatchie, Miss. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. For many years, Gene operated a barbershop, where friends and customers enjoyed his storytelling. He is survived by his second wife, Gustava Lamar Baird; sister, Annette Abels; sister-in-law, Sylvia Baird; brother, Billy Baird and his wife, Liddy; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lou Smith Baird; parents; brother, Gordon; and brother-in-law, Edward Abels. The family honored Gene's wish to be cremated and his ashes will be buried beside his first wife in Zion Hill Cemetery in Albany. Kenneth M. Baird, 54, succumbs Saturday following an operation at Baptist Hospital in New Orleans. Funeral services were held Monday from Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. He was a native of Nashville, Tenn.; born January 12, 1900; came to Hammond a number of years ago. He is survived by his wife, the former Pearl Campbell; two daughters, Marilyn Ruth and Mary Lou Baird, all of Hammond; his mother, Mrs. James H. Baird of Pascagoula, Miss.; two brothers, L. Foster Baird and James R. She was a native of New Orleans. She is survived by a son, Daniel Thomas Baird Jr. of New Orleans; one daughter, Arlene B. Wiley of Ponchatoula; two sisters, Dot Russell of Biloxi, Miss., and Estelle Standish of Illinois; three grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Thomas Baird Sr.; a brother, John Roe; and her parents, Joseph Henry and Leita Virginia Wolfe Roe. A private burial will be held in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Hammond.
