He was born Saturday, July 27, 1940, in New Orleans. Surviving are his wife, Janice Hutchinson Balfantz; four daughters, Dorinda Jones, April Hardy, Suzannah Harper and Amy Sanders; son, Jason Simeon; three sisters, Doris Mitchell, Lynette Bovia and Cathy Reine; brothers, Carrol, V.J., Alton, Stanley and Johnny Balfantz; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Balfantz and Edna Penalbar Balfantz; and a brother, Billy Balfantz. Friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. until service in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Billy Kennedy officiating. Interment will follow in The Garden Cemetery. He was 79, born April 23, 1926, in Bear Island, son of the late Gottfried and Annie Kanzle Balfantz. He was a member of Pine Grove Masonic Lodge 288, Ponchatoula, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and loved gardening. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Ann Balfantz and Jackie Whitehead of Maurepas; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Amelia Hoover and Shawn Lowe of Baton Rouge; and a sister, Masie Balfantz Bovia of Maurepas. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola Benefield Balfantz; second wife, Vera Arnold Balfantz; four sisters, Barbara Rome, Mary Picou, Bernadine Puskas and Mattie Picou; and seven brothers, William, Chester, Gottfried, Russell, Leonard, Robert and Louis Balfantz. Friends will be received at Maurepas Baptist Church, Maurepas, on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Glen Reine. Interment in Maurepas Cemetery.
