He was 83, a native and resident of Amite. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Campaign. He was a founding member of Westview Baptist Church, past director of Westview Water Works and a retired Tangipahoa Parish school system employee and a farmer. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, on Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Mike Woodard. Interment in Amite Memorial Gardens, Amite. Surviving are his high school sweetheart and wife of 56 years, Eva Juanita Graves Battles, Amite; daughters, Caroline Battles, Bastrop, Kathi Battles Moreland, Winthrop Harbor, Ill., and Robin Battles Gray and husband Mark, Hammond; sister, Mary Retha Davis, Amite; and four grandsons, John Mark Gray, Michael Clayton Gray, Daniel Moreland and Clint Sharp. Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Lucille Bennett Battles; two brothers, Melvin Battles Sr. and Clifford Battles; and two sisters, Clara Bennett and Margie Drude. Jimmie was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a medic in the medical company of the 23rd Infanty Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, "Second to None." He was a local building contractor for 48 years. His favorite pastime was fishing and hunting with his children and grandchildren. He was proud of his daughters and their many accomplishments and of his grandchildren.
