Clarence was a loving husband, father, grand- father and brother whom will be missed dearly. He enjoyed gardening in his yard and being the handyman of the house, but most of all he loved to spend time with his family. Clarence leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Gail M. Age 87. While working at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., she joined the Public Health Service in 1942 and worked at a U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service internment camp for 5,000 men of Japanese descent. She married Thomas Henry Benoit, of New Orleans, LA on Jan. 4, 1945, in Santa Fe, N.M. In 1946 they moved to Algiers in suburban New Orleans, where they lived until 2004. Then, they moved to Kentwood to live with their son. She is survived by her son, Terry Kinchen Benoit, and daughter-in-law, Nancy Ault Benoit; her daughter, Patricia Kay Benoit, and son-in-law, Weldon G. Cannon, of Temple, Texas; grandchildren, Bevin Tabor and her husband, Tommy; grandson, Rusty Benoit and his wife, Jana, and three great-grand- children, Bailee and Skylar Tabor and Reece Benoit, all of Kentwood; and her brother, Kenneth D. Visitation at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Spring Creek Baptist Church, Kentwood. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, with Masonic rites at the church and graveside. The Rev. Dr. Danny R. Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Tangipahoa Cemetery. He was born Jan. 12, 1923, to Elson Joseph and Rose Ruth Butler Benoit and reared in Algiers. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, and was among the first corps of about three dozen engineers assigned to hastily build laboratories and infrastructure at Los Alamos, N.M., for the Manhattan Project, where the first nuclear weapons were developed. As the scientists and their families arrived at Los Alamos in summer 1943, he remained to operate boilers and turbines. He met and married Nadine Kinchen on Jan. 4, 1945, in Santa Fe, N.M. In later years, he participated in several oral history projects sponsored by the Los Alamos Historical Society and Heritage Foundation and used in the 2005 documentary, "A Handful of Soldiers." In 1946, they returned to New Orleans, where he worked as an operating engineer first for the U.S. Naval Station in Algiers and later the downtown Federal Building. He was a 60-year member and past grand master for the Indivisible Friends Masonic Lodge No. 404. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Retired Federal Employees and several camping clubs. Preceding him in death were his wife; his parents; and sister, Ruth Benoit Heuer. He is survived by his son, Terry Kinchen Benoit and daughter-in-law, Nancy Ault Benoit; his daughter, Patricia Kay Benoit, and son-in-law, Weldon G.
