She was a native of Demopolis, Ala., and reared in Camden. She earned a bachelor's of education degree from Henderson Teaching College in Arkadelphia, Ark. Berey was a well-known volunteer in both her community and church. She was co-founder of Project Compassion, a volunteer at Ft. Smith public schools, a tutor for the Laubach Literacy Program and a recipient of the Delta Kappa's Distinguished Service Award of the Arkansas NBC's Good Heart Award. She was active in the Fort Smith area scouting programs and helped with the Vietnamese Resettlement Program at Fort Chaffee for which she received a letter of commendation from President Gerald Ford. She was also instrumental in establishing the Junior League in Fort Smith and served as its president. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Sidney Louis Maurras; her second husband, Alexander Joseph Berey; three children, Sidney Walton Maurras of Fort Smith, Manelle Maurras Williamson of Phoenix and Marvin Henry Maurras of Ozark, Ark.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 215 N. Sixth St., Fort Smith, at 10 a.m. under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
