Bjorkgren age 40, son of Capt. S. L. Bjorkgren died Thursday morning at 1:30 o'clock in Touro Infirmary following an operation for stomach trouble. Mr. Bjorkgren was the eldest son of Capt. Bjorkgren, one of the pioneers of this section, and had lived all of his life here where he made a host of friends, all of whom, extend their deep sympathy to the bereaved family. Mr. Bjorkgren is survived by his father and mother, brother William and sister, Mrs. A. L. Hawkins. Funeral services were held from the residence of his parents, at 10:00 o'clock Friday morning, Rev. McCrady offering the family many beautiful words of condolence. S. L. BJORKGREN CALLED BY DEATH - Has Been Citizen of Ponchatoula for Past 49 Years - After an illness extending over many months. Capt. Svante L. Bjorkgren died at 4:30 Wednesday morning, the end coming quietly at his home on Magnolia street. Capt. Bjorkgren, a native of Norrkeping, Sweden, had been a resident of Ponchatoula for the past 49 years, leaving his ship after fifteen years at sea to till the soil. He was 77 years, 8 months and 23 days old at the time of his death. On coming to Ponchatoula in 1881, Capt. Bjorkgren bought a farm on the outskirts of the town and became a successful farmer. As the town progressed, he became interested as a director in the Merchants & Farmers Bank and the Ponchatoula Homestead, and with the establishing of the Ponchatoula Bank & Trust company. Mr. Bjorkgren bought stock and was elected to the directorate of the latter bank. Later, the Southern Homestead was formed and Capt. Bjorkgren was elected president, which position he held to the time of his death. He was a prominent Mason and through his popularity and lovable disposition merited the confidence of his brother masons to the extent that he was thrice made Worshipful Master of the Ponchatoula lodge. Besides his wife, the deceased leaves to mourn his loss, one son, William W. Bjorkgren and one daughter, Mrs. A. Luther Hawkins, two grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were held from his late residence Thursday morning at 10:00 o'clock, with interment in Wetmore cemetery. (Georgia Wells) Mrs. S. L. Bjorkgren Succumbs in Ponchatoula - Funeral services for Mrs. Georgia Wells Bjorkgren, wife of the late Captain S. L. Bjorkgren, who succumbed Tuesday morning at the home of her son in Ponchatoula, were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Thomas Funeral Home in Ponchatoula, with interment in Wetmore cemetery there. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A. L. Hawkins; one son, William W. Bjorkgren, both of Ponchatoula; two grandchildren, Mrs. Svante Spinks and Alfred Bjorkgren; and by one great-grandchild, Georgiana Craig. ***************************************************************************
