She was born on September 29, 1933 in Pulaski, Tennessee. She resided in Ponchatoula, Louisiana for most of her life. She is survived by her husband, Thurman Black (Ponchatoula, Louisiana), her son and daughter in-law, Ricky and Terri Alvaro (Jackson, Mississippi), son and daughter in-law, Dr. Jay and Gina Alvaro (Ashville, North Carolina), daughter and son in-law, Leilani and Derrel Hotard (Ponchatoula, Louisiana), daughter, Felicia Alvaro (Fort Lauderdale, Florida), daughter and son in-law, Pamela and John Hoover (Hammond, Louisiana), and six grandchildren (and spouses), as follows: John Jay and Corrie Alvaro (Ruston, Louisiana), Christopher and Lynn Alvaro (Ruston, Louisiana) (children of Dr. Jay Alvaro); Jeremy Lyon (Orlando, Florida), Jacob Lyon (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) and Rachel Smitha (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) (children of Felicia Alvaro); and Kayla Hoover (Hammond, Louisiana) (child of Pamela Alvaro). Visitation will be held at Geisler Funeral Home, Ponchatoula, Louisiana, on Thursday, June 7, 2007 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Christian service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2007, at Geisler Funeral Home, conducted by her son, Dr. Jay Alvaro, as her family celebrates her passage to eternal life in heaven. Born June 25, 1931 in Anderson County, Tennessee, he was the son of the late John Edward Black and the late Inez Carney Black Prelli. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bob Black. Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Hazel Dean Odom Black; his daughters; Billie Lynn Knauth (Rick), Janet Underwood (Terry), and Amy Black; five grandchildren, Andrew and Suzy Knauth, John Underwood (Tracie), Tara Underwood-Dietze (Josh), and Aaron Black; two great-grandchildren, Ailish and Mina Underwood, all of Cartersville, Georgia. Bill grew up on the family farm in Clinton, Tennessee. He served in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a community leader during the early 1970šs in Emerson, Georgia serving as the first Civil Defense Director, serving on the city council, and organizing the first fire department. During the 1980šs he was VP of Sales for Carpet Transport Inc. while living in Hammond, Louisiana. Since his retirement, Bill spent time watching Braves baseball and spending time with his "girls" and grandchildren.
