He was 81, born Tuesday, Feb. 26, 1924, in Norwood, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Laverne Reid Bowles of Hammond; three daughters, Janet Davis of Hammond, Judy Bowles of Ponchatoula and Joyce Bowles of Hammond; son, Jerry Bowles of Hammond; two sisters, Helen Eckherdt of Foxborough, Mass., and Ruby O'Neil of Dedham, Mass.; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Bowles, Sunny Davis, Justin Bowles and Laura Davis, all of Hammond. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Margaret Atwater Bowles; son, George Bowles; five brothers, Francis, Charlie, John, Richard and Everett Bowles; and two sisters, Shirley Sexton and Doris Bedard. Visiting at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, on Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m. until service at 10 a.m. Burial in Holly Gardens, Hammond. He was a member of the Hammond Berry baseball team. She was a native of Bolivar. Survivors include her husband, David Bowles Jr.; step- son, David Shawn Bowles of New Orleans; one daughter, Linda Brown Saffore of Nashville, Tenn.; step-daughter, Bridgette Winchester of New Orleans; four sisters, Celestine Carter of Bolivar, Barbara Brumfield of New Orleans, Cora Lee Williams and Emma Jean Rome, both of Baton Rouge; four brothers, Claude Wilson and Johnny Brumfield, both of Bolivar, David Wilson of New Orleans, and James Brumfield of Kentwood. Visitation will be Friday at Grant Chapel AME Church, Amite, from 5 until the wake service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Alexander Giles will conduct the funeral Saturday at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery, Amite.
