A five-letter man in sports and member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, he earned a degree in electrical engineering and accepted a commission with the Marines. He became a naval aviator in 1939, beginning a military career that spanned more than three decades and included three wars. A captain at the outbreak of World War II, he served in Hawaii, American Samoa and Okinawa, winning the Bronze Star with combat "V." At the end of hostilities, Lt. Col. Bowman was chosen to chair the committee which developed specifications, requirements, employment doctrine and training requirements for the use of helicopters in amphibious warfare. The doctrine developed by his group was proven in Korea, implemented in Vietnam and changed only minimally during the following years. In 1952 in Korea, Col. Bowman commanded Marine Aircraft Group 12, First Marine Aircraft Wing. For his exemplary service during that conflict, he was awarded the Legion of Merit with combat "V." He retired from the Marine Corps on Jan. 31, 1972, to become superintendent of the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen. Under his leadership, the school gained enrollment and national recognition and became debt free. Stepping down in 1978, he was named vice president for development. His work resulted in a new physical education center and an adjoining football field, which eventually was dedicated in his name. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 321 E. Harrison St., Harlingen 78550 at 2 p.m., Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children's Fund in Harlingen, or the Marine Military Academy Scholarship Fund.
