She was 90 and a native of Neshoba County, Miss. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, from 11 a.m. until religious services at 3 p.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Mitchell and the Rev. Phillip Yoho. Interment in Woodland Cemetery, Kentwood. Survived by a daughter and son- in-law, Mary and Wayne Criswell, Kentwood; three sons and daughters-in-law, Frank M. and Elaine Brent, West Salem, Ohio, Joe and Maybelle Brent, Baton Rouge, and James M. and Martha Brent, Wichita, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a half-sister, Esta Cagle, Pearlington, Miss. Preceded in death by her husband, Frank M. Brent; and a half-sister, Ruth Kardis. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star: 12/3/2008 BRENT, WALTER HUGH, JR. Walter Hugh Brent, Jr., M.D., passed away at River Region Hospice of Cancer on Sunday, November 30, 2008 at the age of 87. Dr. Brent was a graduate of Hammond High School, received a B.S. Degree in 1943 and his Medical Degree in 1950 both from Tulane University. He was board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 1966, appointed a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1968. Dr. Brent was a member of River Parish Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, New Orleans Orthopaedic Society, and Southern Medical Society. A native of Hammond, LA, Dr. Brent was a member of the Army Medical Corps during World War II. His father and father in law, both Tulane Graduates, were strong influences in his life; one inspired him to become a physician, the other to specialize in orthopaedics. Following his internship at Charity Hospital in 1951, Dr. Brent went into an established orthopaedic practice with Dr. H. Theodore Simon, serving on the staff at Hotel Dieu for more than forty years. Over his 58 years of practice, he also served on the staff at Montelepre Hospital, Chalmette General Hospital, Elmwood Hospital, and until January of 2008 at St. Charles Parish Hospital in Luling, LA. He was a longtime supporter of Tulane University Athletics, an Emeritus member of Fore!Kids Foundation through 2008 in the New Orleans area. A dedicated duck hunter, an avid golfer who played in "rain, sleet, snow, or whatever", Dr. Brent served over the years as tournament physician of many major professional golf tournaments in New Orleans. Dr. Brent is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sharon Gilbert Brent of Gretna, LA, a son, Walter S. (Chuck) Brent and his wife Denise of River Ridge, LA, a daughter, Barri Brent Wessler and her husband, Robert C. Wessler, M.D. of Gulfport, MS; four grandchildren, Ryan Brent, Erin Brent, Adrienne Wessler, and Brent Wessler, a nephew, Max H. Durham, Jr., many great nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, Margaret Nesser and Nettie Gilbert, and one brother-in-law, Edward Gilbert. Dr. Brent was preceded in death by his parents, Katherine Henderson Brent and Walter H. Brent, Sr. and a sister, Rita Brent Durham. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street on Thursday, December 4, 2008 beginning at 3:00 P.M. and will conclude with a eulogy in the funeral home chapel at 6:00 P.M. A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, December 5, 2008 at Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond, LA.
