He passed away on Patriot Day, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004. A 1946 graduate of Baton Rouge High School, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from July 27, 1943, until March 3, 1946. During World War II, he fought in the Pacific Theater of Operations and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Expert Rifleman Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After his honorable discharge, he worked for 17 years for Pacific Architects Engineering Inc. as vice president and worked for Ets-Hokin Corp. as director of purchasing for 12 years. He served in the same capacity at Stone Webster for 31/2 years. He enjoyed boating, camping, fishing and swimming. He is survived by a large family, including his first wife, Bettye Rhea Watson, and their two sons, Patrick and Dion; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Patrick and Whitney. There will be a graveside service at 11:00 AM Friday, August 31, 2012 at the Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery in Pumpkin Center. Survived by 1 daughter and son-in-law, Glenda J. Brewer and Ronald Bernard; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Donna Brewer and Jerry Wayne and Betty Singleton Brewer; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert Hurd "Shorty" Brewer; parents, Kit Carson and Julia Hutchinson Effler; 1 son, Wilbert Eugene Brewer; sisters and brothers. She was a member of the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Pumpkin Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the March of Dimes or to the local VFW.
